Actualy it is not a rumor. SOE is going to publish Gods & Heroes for PE and so far it looks like SOE will also be the publisher for STO unless something happens between now and 2008.

Yup, no matter how good it looks, I am not touchig it if SOE take over. I do not want to spend my time with it, if they decide to once again destroy the game a year os so down the line, because some clueless suit thinks he knows better than real developers

I have no clue what the future will hold, but SOE has no deal with Perpetual in regards to Star Trek Online.

You are correct but SOE wants to publish STO as well as I stated but hopefully the answer will be no. As for Daron's listening to the fanbase that is not true at all. They blew off the majority of the poll results. Also they have basicly blown off all the star trek community members entirely and fail to even update their own forum on st.com.  PE has developed the same smoke & mirror tactics that SOE uses. Proof is in all the posts that PE made on the ST forum.

He I'm a big fan of TOS too, but what you have to understand is we are simply outnumbered by the youngsters who grew up watching STNG. Many of them think the old series was just overly camp 1960's nonsense and the only way to address that is to nail them to a chair and make them watch some of the better episodes. Preferably the whole three series if you can manage that (except The Way to Eden - nobody should EVER watch that episode :-) If you could only make them watch one episode, for my money the episode most likely to convert would be Emmy ward winner "The City On The Edge Of Forever"

But to return to the matter you raised, it's a simple question of economics. If they modeled it on the old series fewer people would want to play it.

Yup, bottom line it’s a business. They’re going to do whatever makes the most money. They’re going to make it for the most amounts of people that are going to play it. It’s the same aim game publishers go for; maybe 10 of 100 people who play games might be hardcore gamers, if that. Who would you make your game for, the 10 or the 90 people? Of course it’s not black and white like that, but its gets the concept across.

Though its not like the developers are turning their backs to the fan base. They've got to answer to whoever is paying them and QA. Even though forums are sort of like an unofficial QA.

Mr. Stinnett's comments about listening to what the community has to say and responding to it is very reassuring and makes me even more sure that STO will be one of those MMO's that can redefine the genre.

If he was listening we'd have 3D space combat.

Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.

Setting aside the industry babble, I wonder just how perpetual intends to deal with certain issues. For example, STO will take place after Nemisis but so will star trek legacy. Does perpetual plan to collaborate with bethesda to fit the storylines together? If a starship is destroyed how do they plan to deal with player death? Will the universe be an active development environment or will it be a stale preset never-changing environment? How do they plan to incorperate large numbers of people on ships? Not everyone is captain material... so will even the lamest of players be able to obtain the rank of captain? last thing we need is a noob commanding a starship... I could go on and on... and on and on... but ill save that for perpetual :)

@ Suikie:

Perpetual is trying to stick to canon, which is anything that's been seen on screen in a movie or episode (excluding the animated series). This does NOT include any novels (including the novelization of any of the movies, even if written by Gene Roddenberry himself) and it doesn't include any other video games. Keeping in line with legacy wouldn't make sense. It would be impossible to stay true to every bit of published trek fiction that's out there, especially when most of them contradict eachother.

And the only thing I've heard about player death is that you will be fatally wounded and then emergency transported to a medical facility, where you will be revived and docked points for whatever mission you were trying to complete. Thing is that now they said that if you're a trill and can eventually be joined, I think they should incorporate this in there somehow so if you wanted to, you could die and get another character.

And I didn't notice this at first, but that vulcan has a ghetto booty.

Nice,  I hope they deliver a outstanding game.  This, if developed properly could be one of the best MMORRG.

Good Luck

Although I have been a huge Star Trek fan since I was a kid I have serious doubts on this one. This interview did little alleviate those doubts,in fact it just reinforced them.

Hey since it is supposed to be so long after the last Trek movie the only Canon they shoud be sticking to is the cannon they will be shot out of if this game bombs with the existing tre community which have mostly already gave it two fingers up.

As a member of those forums, I have to say that you couldn't have spoken truer words.  No Klingons?  No Romulans?  No 3D combat?  No adhering to canon?  Customizable ARMOR?!  Classes?!  No meaningful military structure?!   You got your cookie-cutter MMOG preconceptions in my Star Trek and it doesn't taste good.

Look, I love Star Trek.  I love MMORPGs.  I thought that the amount of people who are really into Star Trek and also love MMORPGs would be enough for Perpetual.  Obviously, they have other ideas and want the next WoW in a sci-fi jacket.  Nothing wrong with wanting to make money, but that money won't come from my pocket.  I don't want to play poker with Star Trek-backed playing cards any more than I want to play WoW with a Star Trek skin.

Star Trek as literature is a beautiful light at the end of our world's tunnel.  We're going to overcome our problems and kick ass in the future!  This game does not speak to that.  It's using a license to generate revenue without adhering to the vision that made it so endearing in the first place.  That's why MOST Star Trek (and many other franchise-based) games stink to high heaven.

Waitin' for Stargate now.  <sigh>

It's been some time since i saw any news concerning STO. Their website seems quite small in size and average visually. Also they do release very few info besides the original site content.
As for the game, im looking forward to it, and being a clan member that will eventually incorporate it into its trek games list, i cant wait to introduce my dear community into it. I hope that the ranking system will have an appropriate meaning, so that the clan ranks can be fit into it at least in a partial manner.
Based on the info released so far, its going to be very difficult to make such a complex game, satisfy the inpatient fans, address the game's potential the right way...
much questions and few answers so far, but that wont change my high anticipation for this title and the fact that my hype-o-meter shows 10.::::02::

I must say i heard about STO a long time ago but never really found out much information about it until this interview

As an experienced (and some might say jaded) MMO player this interview has been very revealing but unfortunately it revealed that this game will be nothing new or special.

Players will have the choice to go it alone, group with other ships, or form a crew to maximize the combat power of any single ship. And at higher levels, Admirals will have the ability to form armadas that can be a combination of crewed capital ships and escort ships to tackle high level missions.

Oh dear, this paragraph for me, sums up what the game will be about and really just shows how this game WONT be doing anything new. Your elves and barbarians are now "ships", and different classes of ship group together to do missions (quests). Armadas are your raid force.

we're committed to making a game that is entertaining regardless of your level of enthusiasm for Star Trek. This means that core gameplay features can never be considered fun just because they are modeled after Star Trek. In other words, our gameplay needs to stand on its own as a satisfying gameplay experience. Sometimes this goal drives us to bend or even break the established rules of Star Trek.

Generic MMO dressed up in Star Trek clothing.

Anyway, these are just my views based on this interview. I'd love perceptual to prove me wrong and create something really unique and not elves disguised as spaceships.

I love the idea of being "just an ensign" aboard a ship.  I love the idea of casting my lot with that of a bunch of other players, even for days or weeks at a time.  I don't know how a game might be detailed enough to keep a support player busy every day, like repairing a uh.. tribbles infested airduct, but politics, both onboard and offboard the ship would definitely keep one on their toes, especially in a military setting. Of course, a lot of finance mechanics with steep overhead concerns could pave the way of daily distraction for civilians as well.

If I just wanted to command a ship and see explosions, well I've got innumerable star trek licenses and other mmogs to turn to.  I feel that maybe I've seen enough of that.  I've developed the patience for these online spaces to move into something where I am part of the story but not so clearly the protagonist in my own mind. I want to be a part of something in these games.  Eventually, the ego rejects being the centre of any storyline, and also any simulacra world where none of his actions have any effect.

Show me a world that's not DnD inspired clone and has no levels.  Just practical experience at problem solving that is generated by dynamic tables.  When my section of the ship happens to get exposed to space, just let us start a new character at starfleet academy or wherever.

As for restricting access to game content.. let all the participants have access to the consequences and overall impact of group decisions.  This could be political appointments in the military or civilian government, or it could be game mechanics that require non-capital ships to secure prolonged shore leave on a biweekly basis, and always have access to a celestial map updated within a few hours (to foil low level TS/Vent/Mirc or other 3rd party communication using spies.).

I used to be a Star Trek fan.  More so in relation to the orignal series.  I recall the hype that had existed with the NExt Generation and the progress made through that series was great!  Deep Space 9 was intresting and Voyager didn't capture much of my attention; had issues with that captain.

Out of everything since the Orignal Series I must admit that I truely enjoyed Enterprise.  Well...I think it was that shower scene with the Vulcan and her nipples!

Yes, I will be following the STO game.  For this game to really take off to be a huge success they must have PvP.  Not only that but they must also do this on a single server.  There's no other way to do a Star Trek Online game other then on a single server to allow for the feeling of an immesly populated environment.

I appluad the fact that there's NO twitch controls for piloting star ships!  If there were a twitch based system it would kill any hope of this game getting anywhere worthwhile.

I do have a request:  Characters need to be completely dynamic.  Each player should have the opportunity to have a character who's appearance will likely never be matached.  Sony Online Entertainment did an amazing job on SWG with this respect.  I hope STO has a similar system which establishes characters as the player wants them to look.  I do not want to play Guild Wars in space...

oh, I forgot.  I want female Vulcans with LARGE boobies!!

Frankly speaking, STO and Vanguard are the only two mmo's that show any promise for the future at all.
The foul mouthed adolescents that populate games such as WoW won't likely be drawn to these types of games and thankfully so.MMO's are quickly becoming a niche market, and there are plenty of Trekkies that are gamers that would love to be able to expirience a fictional life in a Trek mmo.IMO as long as the quality is good and it remains attractive to casuals as well as hardcore Trek gamers, then STO will be a guaranteed hit.

I also grievingly agree that pvp will need to play some part in the game however small or large it may be.Not twitch combat mind you(NEVER), but at some point factional combat should be introduced even if it has to wait until the first expansion to be done correctly.

I am really stoked about STO.I'm there, i know that much.
