Okay so I have zero programing experiance, when I get back to vegas (stuck at the reno job corps atm) I want to learn how to use C++ / unreal script and get unreal 2.5 engine / or saga of rayzom one.

I am not going to try to attempt to explain all the stuff I wanna do since  I am expecting to take 20 years on this project .

okay so here is my question if Iam properly funded (for equpment and such) and I use the unreal engine 2.5 , spend 10 hours a week / 5 years =  2,600 hours do I have the faintest chance of getting to build a map (well a small planet really ...I read a thread here about planets and repeating tiles so I get that much) that is 641 milesSQ  (1031 sq kilometers ...or 40 times smaller than the world of dark and light) 410,240 acres

do I have a chance at making that on my own with that amount of hours ... if not how many people would be needed etc?

P.S. I know it's really diffucult to read but since Iam at job corps I only get a few minutes a day at the computer ..so Iam typing this as fast a possible

Can''t find a good reason. Can''t find hope to believe in.

Truthfully I think your goals are crazy the average comercial game have about 60000, to 100000 hours put into it and inless you have a team theres no way you would get your game done. Besides at the rate technlogy is increasing in 20 years there will be a completely different way and probably easier way of making games.

From what you've said, it seems you have the will to do it. The only thing that stands out is the time factor. You say that when you get to Vegas you'll have time to make it, so are you going to quit your job?

If I was in your situation I would make something a lot simpler. You seem to like UT maps, so why not just make one and get some experience with C++ / UT script syntax? Even though most languages look different, there basis is almost always the same, and knowing one will always make it easier to jump to another.

When I learnt to program, I started with C#, which is a lot more user friendly than C++ and gave me a firm foundation for learning C++.

If you think that the project will take that long, you could always try and recruit a friend or someone from the web to help you. If you go to GameDev "Help Wanted" and format your thread properly, I'm sure some people will be willing to give you a hand.

Good luck!

When you have a shiny new hammer, every problem looks like a nail.

You can do it but you just need to right mindset.

Obviously you can not possibly do this by yourself. You should look into outsourcing most of your work to build your content for you. Get yourself a design document of how you want your game exactly. Ask your friends to read through it and look for holes in the design, sometimes a fresh pair of eyes makes all the difference.

Your choice on engines isn't good from my point of view because it means its going to cost you a lot of money, you should look into a cheaper solution.

Either way its going to cost you some cash so don't quit your day job.

When you are laying out your design keep asking yourself, "is this feature fun?" and "what is boring in my game and how can i make it fun?” If you get this part right then you're on your way to making a great game. Read as much about making MMOGs as you can, buy books about MMOG development and how to manage a game business. You'll need to learn about these two things the most.

When you have your game design finished then you can think about starting to build the game.
