Monthly fees (or P2P) is become less and less attractive. When there were few players in the market, P2P was a way to lock in stable income. Now, with more and more options available in the MMO Market, F2P is taking a much larger share.

In fact, even Blizzard has stated that F2P is the future of the MMO market, and that not going F2P in asia was a big mistake, that ended up costing them a lot of money.

More and more AAA games are going to be coming out with a F2P business model, as it allows them to reach critical mass both faster and cheaper. It also provides a more flexible business model, which can be optimized for specific market demands.

P2P is in fact a death sentence for many small to mid sized games, and as such will actually cause the game to fail, when a F2P model would greatly improve the chance of sucess, and the overall revenue earned.

P2P mmo's are not becoming less attractive. The only ones that don't like it are spoiled little bratty children who think they are owed everything. Basically most of this generation of kids (Thanks to our government and the politically correct crowd).

No game has failed because it was pay to play, games fail because they fail to deliver content, excitement and most of all competence is getting rid of bugs/exploits.

let me explain something here, if every game was free to play you would have those item malls where you would end up spending alot more then 15.00 a month to get your charaters geared up and able to complete with people that had tons of money to just waste.

Ya, taking a 27 million dollar loan to develop a game and then putting it up for free would be a smart bussines move... Maintaining servers and a site, patches, GM staff... All this isn't free you know. Plus, not being able to use a credit card isn't a problem, there most probably will be pre-paid game cards.

Well it's all for me grog, me jolly jolly grog,
all for me beer and tobacco!

So long as they spend their monthly fees wisely:

-)Servers

-) Bugfixing

-)Customer Support

-)New Content (free)

-)Balancing

-)whatever

I wouldn't want to play some kind of bananaware that never ripens, even for free.

I personally like monthly fees.  They keep a lot of the people out of the game that I'd prefer not to be in them.  Like you.  I have attempted to play many MMORPGs that don't have monthly fees, and the people in them always end up making me wish for the days when I was playing a fee-based game.

Incidently, I find it somewhat ironic that you mis-spelled retarded.

Some people adventure for fame, others for gold.

Me, I just like to kill things.

I just HAVE to put my two cents in this one.

IF DF is going to be as good as I suspect, and IF these developers have spent the last 7 (yeah around that I think) years of their life just making this game (and who knows how many more after the fact) improving it and tweaking out the bugs and flaws...

Who is to say they don't deserve to get paid for it? I mean SERIOUSLY people food and homes don't just spring up out of the ground by themselves (hehe a little snag from the video) without some serious hard work and sweat from dedicated people who want to see something LIVE.

And all this work for a mere few bucks a month to keep them happy and paying the bills and keep the ideas coming in. What they will create has the potential to be bigger then WOW and the rest of them.

In fact, to do what the others could not. And that is set a new plateau for the gaming industry. Remember, there will be Beta testing before it comes out. Do you think those playing it will be quiet about their experiences, I think not!

Let's see what the betas have to say on the matter once the curtain rises, and then we'll get a real taste of what's ahead for all of us teeth grinding hardcore gamers.

Bring on the Betas!

"montly fee is plain RETARTED"

Noone should have the right to call something "retarded" if they can't even spell the word to begin with.

NO MONTHY FEES!

Ok seriously stop being a imbecile, Darkfall took like 10 years to be developed, do you actually think people are gonna work 10 years to make a game and then let people play it for free? Who did you think makes MMORPGs, God? Plus Darkfall costs money to keep it running so stfu and get your facts right before making a thread you idiot.

If monthly fees keep this kid out of MMOs, then I say double them.  Maybe they'll keep more imbeciles out.

NO MONTHY FEES!

i didn't read all the posts so forgive me if this is stated before..

1. Monthly fees are why companies invest so much time and effort into making a game.

2. Because of the time and money invested in making an MMORPG "THAT'S ANY GOOD", monthly fees are used to get back what they put in.

those are basic reasons why companies have monthly fees

A. Monthly fees are a good thing in a way, they pay the wages of the devs who keep servers up and running. think of it as electricity bills, they need paying so you can use your computer, TV, radio etc.  they are required to keep the company afloat and in the end keep the game servers running so you can play.

B. The free MMO's on the market are not MMORPG's, there is no Role Playing Game about them, they are grindfests.

C. WITHOUT MONTHLY FEES THERE WOULD BE NO MMORPG INDUSTRY AS COMPANIES WOULDN'T BOTHER SPENDING ALL THE TIME AND CASH IT TAKES TO MAKE AND UPKEEP IF THEY DIDN'T GET SOMETHING IN RETURN.

and on a personal observation, you need to sort out your attitude, the way you've worded and bolded your post suggests you are a young kid or have the mentality of a child who CAN'T play what they want cause they're dad refuses to pay each month for a game. Next time you post try being civil about it and explain why you would like a monthly fee gone and what others think on the matter instead of I WANT or "i just want the monthy fee outa there!"

Grow up, get your own credit card, pay your own bills/games. Don't whine about getting rid of monthly fees just cause your dad has refused to pay for them for you and your bitter about it.

It is the destiny of the weak to be devoured by the strong.

9/09/08 10:27:10 PM#75

How old is the original poster? Seriously, if he can't afford 12$ a month in gamecards from Bestbuy  or something do we even want him playing the game until he grows by about 2-3 years.

OP have you ever tried running 10,000 of anything on your computer? how about sending information to 10,000 different computers at once? Shit like that is NOT cheap by ANY means. In order to have a pleasurable in-game experience the developers need money to pay for updates, internet connections and servers.

They have been working on this game for almost 9 years now man. take a 25 man team, and pay them roughly 35k a year for nine years.

That is $7,875,000

just for a 25 man team, and they've had over 45 people going for over 5 years. Which coincidentally comes out to the same exact number, $7,875,000   interesting huh? thats just the people working on the game, not including bills and such.

Lets say the game sells 1 million copies in the first month at $49.99 each. Thats $49,990,000 retail, and the developer wont get all of that money, not even half of it. I can't tell you what the upkeep costs will be but you can be rest assured it will exceed 50 million in a few months, which is where the monthly fee comes in. That fee helps with game updates, gm's and keep ing the world online.

Thats all I can say :\

NO MONTHY FEES!

why is there always the pre-teen/early teen idiot who whines about sub costs?

go outside, go to the neighbor's house, ask if they could use an extra hand...bam, get over 15 dollars...especially when going to old people they seem overly generous

If there was no monthly fee this game would not exist.

Think of it as rent. When you log in to the server, you cause lag. So for the upkeep in costs for the server and bandwidth they must charge US, the users, per month a fee. Also Aventurine must make a profit in the end.

Its pretty simple to understand.

Just my opinion. Yes, they do affect weather i buy the game or not, but only if they are rediculously overpriced. Hopefully DFO will be reasonable

Just what is your definition of reasonable because the standard fee is 14.99 a month which is very cheap and reasonable. There is no other form of entertainment out today where you get as much entertainment value as MMO's.
