As the poster above me stated, a server does in fact cost money. Said server also costs money to pay a crew to maintain, from what I've heard the Darkfall server is very intricate and thus, very expensive. Also look at how long Darkfall has been in development. All that time with no income because the game isn't complete and thus isn't in stores yet and doesn't have a monthly fee. Odds are the Devs are under the strain of their investors and debt which they owe to them. I hate how people always spaz about monthly fees "I don wanna pay money cuz I'm cheap" blah blah blah these games aren't cheap to run, you need servers, you need people to main tain these servers, people to work on developement, people for various reasons that contribute to the game. If you want a free game go play GW but if you want a quality game or anything like that (no offense to GW players)then you have to pay the fee, if it's credit card identity theft your dad fears then maybe the makers of this game should do the thing WoW does with the subscription cards other wise your out of luck. If it's the fact your paying money for entertainment, then you might as well not rent movies, pay for cable, pay for net access at all because all these things are a source of entertainment gained by a fee. And I'm quite sure cable is way more expensive then the 14 dollars monthly I pay for World of warcraft. |

I'm not a big fan of monthly fees either, but I understand why they have them. Some games, however, are just plain bad and shouldn't have monthly fees because the devs screwed up. I do like monthly fees because you can see if your money is being put to use in game with patches and new content and it keeps the servers hack-free for the most part. Monthly fees are a nuisance though, but they are almost necessary. It would be nice if they went down in price though to something cheap like $5 a month and still get the same amount of content as if you were paying $15, but that will probably never happen. You can always get a job though and pay for yourself to play. Its only a couple hours of work, not that big of a deal. |

as all of the other posters said...fees pay for more things...unless ofcourse you work at soe then the fees are for stuff you already paid for but was just not included in the original game...hate those guys... anyhow I agree if you want a freeplay then get Guild Wars...and also I agree if they screw up the game they should change it to freeplay or kill it...Planetside is going free play and SWG Should but I hope they just kill it... as for Darkfall they are probably in debt over there heads trying to get this game out in a working order...these days with everything that is coming out about how SOE's business practices you dont want to deliver a half finished game... and besides to include more and more into the game you need to pay someone and we have to divy up the money...rather pay a 15 a month fee then foot the bill for a dev's year salary.... The best thing about monthly fee's is that it keeps the kids with bad english away from mmorpg's
World is Strange, Full Of Mysteries. Nobody knows everything or nothing, Death Takes And Live Gives. Where is This All going to? |

We have to have monthly fees the one thing that could make me not buy Darkfall is if they change to those stupid systems where you get more gold if you spend more $ creating a game that bases how well you can do in the game based on how much money you have in rl. And instantly defeating the whole purpose of a mmorpg.

I have to agree that monthly fees are the best route...too many games are going to the pay for elite items system and that just sucks...atleast with monthly fees you make it fair and allow ppl to FIND the elite items...

I also concur! Monthly fees are vital to MMORPGs. As many have posted here before; how would they be able to keep their servers running, their workers and designers paid, their development going.
And as someone already mentioned before... You want to play this game, then get a job. If you are too young to get a job, then talk to your dad to give you some work at home or something similar. Be creative instead of complaining about monthly fees. |

Tbh what annoys me is the fact that in some games you have to buy the expansions even though you are already paying a monthly fee. Seeing as the expansion is only about a month's subscription anyway, it is not very significant, however it is the principle that bothers me. They should be using the money contributed in monthly fees for additional expansions to the world, as after all they are providing you with an ever changing world. Unfortunately, it seems that in reality they are providing you with an ever changing world, as long as you keep purchasing the expansions (EQ2 anyone). From what I've heard, Lineage 2 and Saga of Ryzom have got this right and provide free expansions. Oh and btw, I think you would care what the starting price was. If they released a new game with a price of hmm lets say $500 (roughly 3 years in subscription), would you buy it? I think the current system provides far better value, as you don't have to shell out so much in advance. You can try it, and if you don't like it you can walk away. I dread to think of a day when all mmorpgs have no monthly fees. They will all be sub par, under developed, and badly serviced. I think in that case I would prefer a single player game. Please do not use Guild Wars as a good example as this does not really have a persistent world in the tradiitional sense. It is more like NWN with a good chat room |

Having to play free mmog is like having a death wish. Paying mothly to mmogs lasts for a long time and unlike free mmogs they get boring very easily perhaps 5 minutes later, you'll stop playing that game. Thus playing a free mmog, you'll likely encounter allot of hackers, cheaters, gold farmers, etc. you name it.
