Ok firstly I didn't vote in this but if I had then I would have voted for Eve as much as possible and just to clarify:

1. I have played video games for years and years and years;
2. I have played MMORPG's for years; and
3. I played WoW for one day and deleted it from my computer (not because I hate the game its just not my cup of tea).

I don't know CCP very well yet, but any dealings I have had with the volunteers that work for them have been amazingly helpful. Yes they actually have people who help you learn this game because guys it ain't easy, its rich and complicated and oh so yummy. So yes they are better than those lovelys over at SE or at Blizzard because honestly I haven't talked to anyone affiated with either of those two companies. And yet within minutes of logging on to Eve I had someone say "Hi and welcome and if you have any problems let me know".

The graphics? Hmmm well I have never ever played a RPG like Eve. I don't even feel the need to role play because quite simply I'm there and its as real as you get. This is the most emersive game I have ever played. I panic when rats or pirates enter a system when I am mining, I scream when my ship gets blown up and I'm not gonna say what happens when I wake up in my clone. In other words I feel this game. That is why it wins on graphics in my book because it sucks you in and you are there looking at this amazing planet under you just enjoying the view. It makes you believe.

PVP um well its insane and honestly it scares me to death. Yes this is a game where you have to use your brain. It doesn't matter how big your guns are, if you are too slow you are toast. But what I love most of all is that in this universe Karmah is key.

So for me this is the best game, the game that I want to spend the time on. For me I likened it to the old checkers vs. chess debate. They are both fun it just depends on what you want. I have played games for years and finally I have found what I want.

I want EVE.

That would be the most obvious reason why Eve Online claimed the awards. If WoW, EQ2 or L2 officially told their players about the awards and asked them to vote, they probably would have won too. They probably just didn't care as much.

Not to take anything away from Eve, but it has quite the small subscription base compared to other mmorpgs for the simple reason most don't care to play it. Why? Because most don't think its a game worth buying. Thats not stab at Eve, just a point of fact.

Oh well, the awards probably meant he most to Eve Online so props to them.

There was 1 forum post telling players of the nomination as far as i know.

And NEVER did CCP say "please vote"

Also, i would doubt there was no post like it on the WoW boards..

edit @ the_hanz

howcome i never heard of you?

Which brings me to another point: because eve is all in one server and the community is so tightknit: fame is possible in the game :) Thats a major draw for me

My 2 cents... I find it interesting to look at the parallels between Eve and SoR.

Both have:

* Almost non-existent quests beyone vanilla fedex or bounty runs.

* Massive skill trees and a real focus on skills and crafting.

* The requirement that a player get off their butt, go out and explore and actively look for something to do.

* Deep technical play and a steep learning curve. This makes them both appeal to a more mature player base.

* A focus on social interaction to the point that its required to get anything done. Unfriendly players get weeded out real fast because if you cant cooperate and interact with others, there is pretty much no way to advance very far in the game.

* A small, but very loyal subscriber base and thus a relatively better relationship between the devs and the players than elsewhere.

* A much more complex and realistic world than other MMOs present. SoR has flocking, herding, migration patterns, seasons, etc. Eve has an incredible NPC population and they keep adding more kinds of objects to the universe. In both worlds you can just explore and look at the sights for longer than you would think possible.

Its also interesting that while Eve obviously had a huge fan turnout and this thread grows quite long, SoR was nominated for best story but the forum over there is relatively empty.

All i can add as "ebil EVE-fanboi":

I was playing WoW, seriously. US beta, EU beta, +1 month subscription just after beta. It was great fun against the AI, no real threat, no risk, in worst case "find your corpse". It was entertraining for a while, but the static world made me bored some way. I started to miss my friends in EVE, the community and stuff. So subscription been frozen.

While this above happened, my char in EVE was continously trained, so i continued where i stopped. The vacation i spent gave me power, i was recharged. Thats all. WoW is entertraining, but has no depth. Any <insert fantasy MMO> fanboi can call the 70 000 number puny, but this wont make change the results. The EVE fanbois were awake and take their time, others werent that dedicated.

We will see which game will you emphasize next year. You know, good games last more than a year.

Some dudes say numbers of subscribers doesnt matter. Some others say its important. I dont really care how many people are playing and what. EVE fits for me and im glad it won. CCP is a great company, and they made a great game imho. If you dont like EVE, you are allowed to play else. If you disagree, you can disagree. Im playing this game almost since 2 years. Let me decide what i like. THX.

ps: before someone would trying to offend me, yes, i seen battlegrounds in WoW at my friend. Nice. Period.

ps2: yes, thats my english, i cant better kthxbye.

ps3: Someone mentioned here grinding in EVE and made me confused, so im leavinf to read some game description what have i missed.

This is very true.  Parm is a well-known pirate, and I've even run into him one or twice.   In fact, my first real PvP engagement was against him, his then-CEO Karanis, and someone else, with me in my shiny new raven.  I managed to take out Karanis' caracal, but got my ass kicked by Parm and his mate and had to warp out.  I...um...actually had stabs on...which is what allowed me to run.

(I've since learned how evil stabs are and only use them when I'm moving something extremely expensive from point A to point B.  My combat ships, on the other hand, never have them.)

I am being surrounded by stupid people.

EVE Online reminds me much of my first experiences on SWG. If SOE did anything they could have learned from EVE's very well done model. SWG would not have been the failure it is today, if it had a design team that was skilled like CCP.

Eve is a sandbox game.

Sandbox games are vastly different from many RPGs out there. Even attracting a different and diverse playerbase even.

Now considering CCP is a new company and eve is there first major child, this is one hell of an accomplishment, EVE at is 3 years old and is contineously growing..when i started 13 months ago there were 12k online tops...now were hitting 23k..how many MMO will continue to grow at this rate 3 years after launch? soon EVE will be the first game wi
