Don''t Panic!!!!

Hi all,

I've looking a t a few of the threads lately and it got me looking back at my MMORPG trail and all I'm really doing here is reflecting on a few things. Feel free to post your comments This isn't a blast on any game or a "world according to me" thread. Its just for conversation.

Of the games that I played I started with AC, I know a lot of people will roll their eyes saying "oh here we go with the old games are the best speech" Well thats not really the case. Many of the games today are so much better in so many ways then the older games but the one thing that really stands out is the level and variety of challenge in newer games vs. the older games.

You see in AC many of the "quest" actually had a storyline and the monthly patches all tied into a larger storyline. The quest usually had a bunch of elements in them riddles, jump puzzles, conversation strings, multiple locations that had to be completed simultaneously, pressure plates, traps, acid pits (oh how I hated acid pits) the traditional boss mob at the end of the dungeon. These elements where scattered throughout the game and character levels and not just reserved for "raids" or "end game" content.

Although there where "kill task" there where not that many and they where not seen as "quest". The newer games are filled primarily with kill task. I just started playing WoW again and I'm still playing L2. Although you can argue ones content is better then the other (one has a completely different content philosophy) they both boil down to the same thing for the most part. Go out and kill x number of beasties and come back for a reward. Although thats all any MMORPG can really offer as truly dynamic story interaction is not technically possible at this time, it just feels a bit uninspired. I really enjoy WoW so don't get me wrong and I also really like L2 but as far as some of the most exciting quest and adventures I would have to say AC really did it for me. Although WoW really does show some spark in a few quest, they are generally speaking the exception and not the rule. WoW's instances and quest do tend to be a hack'em up roller coaster ride that focuses on the group working in a way to defeat x combination of mobs. IMHO.

Now did/does AC have its problems? oh yes but thats a long story and the subscriber base shows what happens to a game when the company neglects it for to long. Is AC a better game? No not by a long shot, BUT its content is far better them most others out there IMHO.

What are some of the best quest I have ever done in a MMORPG?

Gaelans Citadel (AC) Queen Slayer (AC) a few others but they are all AC quest.

Now I haven't played AC in a few years so I don't know what its like today but I really wonder why more games haven't built on the older quest models. As a player group we seem to taken a step back and except a more basic game content. Many people actually argue over who games "kill task" are better or worse yet calling them "quest". I personally feel the game industry can do sooo much better.

So why aren't we getting more content like this or better in the newer games?

What games on the way are NOT going to be "kill task" centered?

What are some of the quest any of you have done that really stands out in your memory and from what game?

Have a great weekend!
