The New Year is already looking up for the people at EVE Online. The game has now, not only broken the 20,000 PCU mark, but has broken it with authority as 22,020 were clocked online at the same time on 1/2/06

At 20:44 this evening a new PCU milestone was reached when 22.020 EVE Players were logged in at the same time. CCP's hardware partners are working around the clock to deliver more power to the Tranquility cluster so that the regiment of one unsharded virtual world with no instancing can hold.

22K is impressive, but the lag was massive to say the least (unbearable in major empire systems) - lets hope CCP mathches the 'records' by making the planned hardware upgrades soon(tm). ::::08::

Great game btw.

Eve is a very different kind of game to play. I have subscribed 3 times, and quit after a few months each time. It is very innovative in what they are doing and I am glad to see them hit a new record. They are a good company and every customer service issue I ever had with them they went out of their way to get me taken care of.

I was on during that time, however in 0.0 space we had no lag. But we all do hope that those 64-bit servers are going to come in soon!!

It's also amazing to see how many players are whining about the lag.  Records are nice but if having more peoples = more lag it's not very interesting.

I played this game 4 months ago and the lag was unbearable in some regions and there was less then 16k players, i can't imagine the lag with 22k.

They had made many improvements in the last week regarding the communication between cluster and clients.

16k and up to 20k are really no problem these ys but if the player count goes far beyond 20k, only  some regions are getting laggy.

They've really done a great job so far, and the new hardware will hopefully fix this kind of issue for a long time.

hehe some noob systems have 300-400 people in them

but the lag was not from the network but from the graphic lagggg

is not big deal more like 5 more seconds to load the systems and 2-3 sec to load the "ships-graphics"

is ok but not for PVP that eve is all about...
1 seconds can make a differens in eve... even half a second::::28::

Time is a great teacher, too bad it kills all of it's students.

Keep in mind a few things on 'the record'

First, this is a single instance game, unique in the MMORPG world, and most definately showing a superior game core for being able to handle that kind of stress load at all.

Second, this is a REAL PCU record, sorry WoW and EQII, instancing and seperate servers kind of makes the term "Concurrent" invalid for you... I'm impressed with your ISP's and network guys, a quarter million users on a site ain't bad, but the game engine itself isn't even in the same league as EVE (yes, all 22k users could realistically be in the same place at the same time in game).

Third, the "LAG' perceived by users was actually prior to the 22k mark being reached, it was due to some needed hotfixes following a huge content release just before Xmas. Again, I have seen just about every major MMO experience the SAME issues with every content release they do (and you all know it), as well as the only major lag reports from players, were in a few systems with an extreme population count (200+ users) and again, every other MMO does the exact same thing (and they shard those zones out, cheaters!)

Eve Broke 23k Concurrent Users on one shard (beating its own world record again) Last night.

The Devs have confirmed a TRIPLING of the server capacity by the end of february as they replace THE ENTIRE CLUSTER with 64bit machines.

This will put the Eve-Cluster in the top 500 most powerful supercomputers in the world. The first gamining system to even come close.
