Hot on the heels of our Reader's Choice Nominations (voting is ongoing), we have dedicated the first update of 2006 to our 2005 MMORPG.com Editorial Awards.

For the 2005 MMORPG.com Editorial Awards we have four categories:
  • Developer of the Year: Awarded to the developer (not publisher) we feel did the best job in 2005.
  • Expansion of the Year: The expansion pack released in 2005 that we feel offered the best experience.
  • Most Anticipated of 2006: The game that we feel may launch in 2006 that we are most anticipating.
  • Game of the Year: The game launched in 2005 that we felt was the best.
Each category also has one or more honorable mentions.

You can find out all the winners here.

How did City of Villains win game of the year? its just CoH with different avatars and pvp. It must have required almost no effort on NCsoft's part.

There wasn't exactly tough competition for 2005. Look around and you'll see that most of the people that frequent this site are jaded MMO gamers tired of the same old crap the genre keeps dishing out year after year, hence the reason why they're here in the first place; keeping an eye on what's to come. :)

CoV was a game most people tried and enjoyed, whether they stayed with it long-term or not. It rarely fails to make a good first impression even though it has no staying power. Wasn't that long ago that Guild Wars was the latest craze on these forums when it released, and it probably would have gotten more than honorable mention if it hadn't released so long ago.

But like I said, poor year for MMO's overall imo.

I agree with ya. I wouldn't have voted on CoV as game of the year because CoV/CoH has no staying power in my opinion as well, but I can see why it got the vote. It is nice to see something different.

Speaking of being jaded, the only game coming down the pipe that I'm half way interested in seeing is that pirates game.

2005 was poor year to gaming in all aspects, not only MMOs.
but agin, thats only coz of the major hits of 2004 (also in all of the geners, incloding MMOs).
now 2006 - 2007 looking good, with lots of realses and alot more varity (not only fantasy).
i still don get why POTBS didnt win the most anticipated, i guess its coz the game going for niche of the market.

P.S.
DoF for EQ2 was really that good ?

Wolfang, the lvl 50 Guardian of Splitpaw - EQ2.
SuRfer of Werner - Planetside

Wooo nifty editorial awards. Looking back on it now though, it does seem that 2005 was a slow year huh ? Anyways.

Have to agree with pretty much all of them, when a game like CoV wins best game though, I guess all you can do is hope for a better upcomming year :). Kidding... sorta.

What a poor, poor year when CoV and EQ2 are the newsmakers.

Lets hope 2006 is a better year for new games or else I might just become a master at Mario Cart double dash.

Well at least the best won.  Even though its obvious some people dont like CoV winning.  CoH/V is the best MMORPG out there.  Oh well!  Can't wait till 2007 for another City of ??????.

lol, funny you should say that. Over the last few days I have been looking seriously at single player games, and have looked at some videos of games for a certain console. :p

Basing if a company is the developer of the year based upon if there is an expansion pack or not, is an extremely poor decision.  An expansion pack means the customer is paying more for content, whereas content released through patches are free.

I strongly disagree with the basis behind that form of judgement that "kept Blizzard from being DotY," however that doesn't mean that they should be deserving of that reward, either.

So far there have been some good, and some bad things regarding these mmorpg.com awards, and it seems to me like you are trying to dig around to find rewards to give to everyone.

As a side comment, 2005 was one of the worst years in recent memory for MMORPGs, hopefully companies now realize that they MUST do something to invigorate the player base by introducing inventive and innovative concepts to games.

That's my $.02 and because I like seeing these, good luck on better deciding next years awards.

Well, an extremely big thing is that Blizzard released one free expansion and no retail products. Cryptic did four free expansion and one new stand-alone product.

The later trumps the former. The Developer of the Year category cannot just be given to the company that runs the most successful product, otherwise I might as well just call that game of the year too.

How in the name of God did City of Villains get game of the year!? Yeah it's a nice game but the bugs are almost game-breaking. While bases sound nice in concept their current implementation is horrible, with items disappearing at random and the quest/mission to get an item of power so that you can participate in base raids hasn't even gone live yet. This has the potential to be a great game, if they ever get it working right.

The choices in the category are Guild Wars, The Matrix Online and Irth Online.

City of Villains in my mind is the best of the those eligible.

Game breaking bugs????  Wow must be playing a different game then CoV.  I think the biggest bug I have since I have played the game was a flashy behind a wall.  Wow thats a game breaking bug.  So far any bug I have ever seen posted can be taken care of by submiting it (in the right section) and waiting 10 to 15 minutes for a GM to come by and reset the mission.

Items disappearing happens to less then .1% of groups.  Sorry but thats not a horrible implemention.  I have yet to see anything bad come from CoH/V.  Even with ED and other lowering of other Power Gamers abilities.

Well at least CoH/V is better then WoW.

Ummm, that was a joke right?

The character creation is stellar. The combat is fun. But it quickly goes downhill after that.

It is, hands down, the most repetitive game I've ever played in my life.

It's also just an expansion for CoH regardless how they try and sell it.

No I am not joking.  I have played MMORPGs since Ultima First Came on the scene.  Every MMORPG is repetitive.  There is no difference from one MMORPg and another.  When it comes to Repetitiveness.  All it comes down to is what you like more.  The only other game that is even CLOSE to what CoH/V is, is EQ2.

CoV is both an expansion and a Standalone.  You can classify it as just an expansion.  But that doesnt change the facts that its both.

I would have rather seen *no* winner in the expansion of the year than see EQ2:DOF win it.

The expansion was released at the same time as the Combat Upgrade and proved to be a game-breaker for myself and many others.  It was released in an incredibly buggy and incomplete state.  There were no high level writs, crafting recipes were borked or non-existent, quests were bugged, loot/rewards were a huge letdown and to this date there are still problems with the expansion that have not been addressed.

While it's a beautiful and well thought out expansion, it certainly did not deserve Expansion of the Year when it caused many people to cancel their accounts.

I hope Conan releases in 2006. Not holding my breath though. I'm glad you did not accept Turbine's "2006" release date for LOTRO. That's one game I *know* will slip.

Well... these awards surely show a point : the MMO player base is ready for the next break-through in the MMO genre. If you think 2005 was a poor year, what could make 2006 a good one ? Honestly, I find that the regular questing-xp-bashing between orcs, elves, knights (and few outsiders like EVE) cannot bring anything new.

Time for a company to increase the social aspect of gaming in a way DnL was written on paper (I doubt it will ever be released like they planned it) or what SWG tried to do. The basic classes you need to level is now an old concept. Time to break the mold and find something new.
