You're right, those signs are annoying because so many Americans are practically illiterate. What they need are photos of dead Iraqis, especially children, and dead American soldiers. Maybe then they would have some impact. Nevertheless, I give the guy credit for trying.

I''m just a virtual girl in a virtual world...

Sadly to say, this guy has not gone away, and for some reason, he's not easily shaken off. And yes, he has around a thousand locations where he posts his signs.

There are alternatives — look the other way, spend time on places where he cannot go (planned communities, private islands) — but I agree that none of the alternatives are very good.

Still, it's hard to judge a community of 105,000 just by a single member who is earning quite a large amount of money by this scheme. You see, to get him to go away, you have to buy the land where he het up his signs — for a huge amount (you're free to set the price on land you own). With that money he pays his monthly fees and buys even more land. So it's blackmail through harassment — pay me, I'll go away, and buy some more land elsewhere.

Don't be so naive as to think he has any political message to spread. All he does is making money — more every day, as people get more and more annoyed, and are willing to spend huge amounts just to get rid of him near their plots — thus making him richer, and able to buy even more land :-( It's hopeless.

Why Linden Lab allows this to happen (when they have taken steps in so many cases in the past...) is a mystery to most. I suspect he has good, real-life lawyers, that have threatened to sue Linden Lab in case he's banned and his signs removed. There must be a reason.

Hi,

this is what comes with free speach. But as long as he post the sign of land he owns or got the acknowlege of the landowner he is good to do whatever he wants.

I must say this is what i enjoyed most about SL. If you own your land, do what YOU like.

I once bought a beach, surrounded it with big walls, made an entry where everyone had to accept the rules that he might see nudity and when he entered, he was on a virtual nudity beach..

"Free speech" is not an absolute: take a look at the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights. You'll see that Article 19 gives you the right of free speech, as expected. But people tend to forget articles 29 and 30: you cannot use any articles on the Declaration as a legitimisation of overriding other people's rights; and everyone has duties to the community.

Put into another words: if the community is bothered by your "exercize of free speech", you don't have more "right" to free speech than to neglect the communities' duties. Both articles have the "same" value. When at odds as in this case, you cannot chose one article over the other.

But I understand this is mostly an ethical/legal problem; my point is only that there are no "absolutes". Free speech and the duty to respect the community are on the same level; you cannot say one is "more important" than the other, both are equally important!

Your example is very different. In Mature areas of SL, nudity is allowed. But you go an extra step: being conscious of your duties to the community, you do two things:
- wall off the space of the nudity beach (so as to protect intimacy inside, and also to cover nudity for those offended by it — although you're allowed to be naked in Mature areas)
- you warn people about what they can expect beyond those walls.

I find your attitude a very respectful one towards the community. You would have the right to set up your nudity beach anyway (Community Standards would allow it!), but you felt your duty to warn people about it and even give some "protection" from nudity. That is a very decent attitude!
