Howdy, I posted a post like this in the pub, so if you've already read it, you don't have to read it again :P

I was thinking, how cool would a Final Fantasy Tactics style MMORPG be? For those of you familiar with the game, the game was soley based in combat (that would have to be slightly revised...), but had a combat system similiar to one mentioned in a different thread on this board. That is, where the world is comprised of a semi 3D grid of movement squares, and in battle one must plot their attacks within their range of attack/movement based in these squares (meaning that any part of the world can be used as a diverse new battlefield). So for example, I'm a knight who gets into a battle with an archer in my castle. Well, since I use a sword my range is only two squares in any direction (front, left, right, or behind me), but since he's an archer he can hit me from 5 steps away. So, in FFTactics turn based style, he chooses to fire a shot at me and then move away. I use my turn to move toward him and heal myself. On and on. Until, one of my friends comes climbing over the wall and hits him with a freeze spell that locks him in place long enough for me to catch up to him and wack him one. Sounds like fun, huh? Imagine an entire war happening in such a style, where your strategies must be sharp and in constant interaction with the rest of your team. Ooo, I get tingles just thinking about it.

Of course, to spice it up a bit from FFtactics, you'd have to add an economic system, a political system, an actual world map, maybe some vehicles, etc. But imagine what adding a warcraft/sim-city style building structure could add to the game, like in Shadowbane. That is, you can build establishments that provide you with something, like a blacksmith or a guard tower. Now imagine the possibilities - you and five of your buddies from work group together and build a small castle and some guard towers that eventually spreads into a kingdom which you and your buddies defend in FFTactics style combat. Wouldn't that be a bit more exciting than 'Ooo, my quest is to kill a mob. Click....slash....slash....spell....slash...slash...slash. Slash. Zzzzz....'?

Let me know what you think. If there are any developers out there reading this that are intruiged, I've got it all mapped out in my head, just drop me a line :)

peace,
Matt

Let the heads roll! *CHOP, THUMP*

dont u wonder why that was the only ff game made that way becuase the concept was a flop it doesnt have anything people want at all. peopl want to controll the character like it would be themn in real life. like an escape from reality, or a fantasy life. when a game is more interactive and developed people want to play it. especially when interacting with other people is ez and u can do almost anything u could do in rl!

ps: my point is proven! ::::24::

Are you kidding? There are so many games like this on the market. It would never work for an MMORPG though. If you want to see it at its best, try Gladius on the XBox. I have been playing it for a couple weeks now. It is great! If you like turn based games.

FFTactics is some people's favorite out of the FF series. It wasn' a flop at all. The argument that people just like to control one character doesn't apply to most of the other FF games either. There are people that do like to control one character, but then again, this idea wasn't targeting them. I remember this mentioned in the pub and thought, "Hey that's not a bad idea." I think it's definitely a niche market, but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing.
