OP  7/14/05 8:14:11 AM#1

When I come back to SWG I want to be a MBH of course because from what I've read it seems like it's a real fun profession to play. I have just a few more questions regarding the skill trees.

1 - Should I go for Master Marksman first so I can be better in combat?

2 - Once I get Master Marksman along with completing that one scout tree, what weapon specialization should I go for? I'm not doing rifle because of the fact that you have to be prone so it's either Carbineer or Pistoleer? This is where i'm confused a little bit.

Should I be specializing in carbine or pistol as well as master marksman? Is being a master marksman good enough for BH combat and pvp combat? Just not sure which would be better for ranged pvp and damage dealing...Carbine and Pistol weapons.

I thank you for your patience.

Joe

Oh yea btw, which server has a good population on it? I was thinking of joining Elnator on Lowca. Does the Lowca server have a good amount of players?

Thanks.

If you have time could you please explain to me what the advantages and disadvantages of Pistoleer vs Carbineer? I guess that's my real question. Which does more DPS and has more speed than the other, but also what are the downsides of the weapons, etc.??

Thanks again.

Personally I'm MBH / MC / Pistols 0001 and novice medic. I am not a master marksman any longer as I don't think specializing in an additional tree that's useless to me is worth the meagre bonuses given in the master box... tying up 15 skill points to get +15 speed and +25 accuracy is less useful to me than getting the ability to heal myself in combat or utilize another special that could inhibit my enemy. I used to be MBH / MC / Pistols 0001 and Master Marksman but found that medic was far more useful to me when they loosened the trees up after CU.

When you initially grind BH you will want to do the following:
First grind to Master Marksman and your explore line of scout.
Next grind out Master Whatever ( carbines, rifles, pistols )
Then do Bounty Hunter. Do the line of BH that matches with your elite prof (carbines/pistols/rifles) first then do the other two so you have a devastating weapon to fall back on if you get in trouble while doing the other two combat lines.

Only then, after you've finished all your other combat stuff, should you mess with investigation. It will take the longest and will go faster the more damage you're able to do. Having your combat areas taken care of will help this go faster.

Oh... and if you're wise, you'll never complain to a MBH who has Master Scout and Master Marksman badges that BH is slow to grind... you'll get, at best, laughed at... and at worst dismissed as an utter noob :) Back in the day we had to master scout and marksman and had to wait on shuttles and walk to our marks :) Now you get to use your spiffy personal ship and fly directly to your target from the town you got his mission from on top of the fact that you get to zip around on your spiffy barc speeder :)

Do most people train up their piloting skills? Or do they do just enough to fly their ship from planet to planet?

Moral victories don't count.

i would say most people actually level up.  there is a lot of fun to be had ins pace and customizing your own fighter and then using it in combat is a big part of it.

there are some, however, that just jtl to skip shuttles when travelling.  if space isn't your game, then that's a good as use as any.

the good thing is that piloting skills are kept on a seperate tab from all your other skills, so you don't have to sacrifice any of your ground based skills to become a pilot.

Another quick question:

If I am going for Master Bounty Hunter along with either Master Pistoleer or Master Carbineer with novice medic for healing, what starting stats should I create my character with? How much Health, Action and Mind to start out with? Also what is more important for combat?

Also what race do you guys recommend?

Thanks.

there are no more starting stats anymore.  you get 1000 health/action/mind.  as you grow in combat level, your HAM increases.

health is the ONLY attribute that can be attacked and render a player incapped.  action and mind are now pools for special abilties.  no more killing yourself by using too many specials.  there are invisible subpools called Health/Action/Mind Regen that just determine how quickly your main pools regenerate points.  any bar of your HAM, including the regen pools, can be modified with buffs, foods, spices, and abilities.

Get Master Marksman until you don't have any points left. Then sacrifice it when you need points to advance. The +25 ranged accuracy and +15 speed will help a LOT till you get up in one of the elite combat profs.

So I need to get Master Marksman first to get the +25 ranged accuracy and +15 speed?  Then once I do that I need to train pistoleer or carbineer and master that?  Is it worth taking the time to get full master marksman for the +25 ranged and +15 speed bonus instead of just doing let's say Master Pistoleer?

Just clarifying is all.

The way I look at it is this:
You can't be Novice Pistoleer until you reach both Pistols 4 and Ranged Support 4
Ranged Support 4 uses COMBAT experience which is 1/10th of your weapon XP
So you can finish Pistols/Rifles and Carbine lines of Marksman before you finish ranged support 4. So yeah, it's worth going ahead and getting master marksman... you'll probably finish it before you ever get to Novice Pistoleer.

Then just hold on to the Master Marksman skills until you actually need to start dropping skill blocks to train up other areas.

(Note: There is a way to get *combat* XP faster using C-12 grenades, but it requires a good group to keep you from getting very dead doing that so even with grenades you will likely finish all 3 weapon lines of marksman before finishing ranged support :) And the Master Marksman block gives more benefits than the first combat block of any of the ranged elites so it's better to use your first chunk of combat xp to finish off master marksman and get the master box than it is to get the first combat xp block in pistoleer/rifleman/carbineer.

Up to you though. Its certainly POSSIBLE to just use pistols your entire time and go straight from marksman to pistoleer without the master marksman box but you'll find that life is easier with the master marksman box.

I chose a final BH template of Master, with Master Rifleman, and Master Marksman.

There is a good reason for this. Although I haven't hunted Jedi in a year, what with all the griefing, the exploiting, and general lack of challenge involved, I will do so in the future if Permadeath is brought back. But only if that permadeath includes the top Jedi.

In that case, by observation I recently dicovered that Jedi love to hunt Pikets (as one good example), and groups love to have Jedi, whether they are guildies or not.

Under those circumstances, these hunting groups generally open fire on a single target, but usually when Jedi are involved they do a round-robin. That is, the Jedi pulls everything. The group members fire on the piket, retarget, fire on next, retarget etc until all pikets are eliminated. This way everybody gets quick experience and the Jedi maintains all aggro.

Given this method of hunting, a Master Rifleman can easily sneak up on that group under cover without being discovered on radar, and use cover shot to enhance the damage being done on the Jedi until they 'avoid incap'. After that, it's only a matter of time.

See, what they are looking for is the fast-moving speeder hunter that drops off and engages using surprise. Under the above conditions though, it's much easier to 3-incap a Jedi to death, and they or the group might never even tell what you just did until the engagement is long ended and your credits in the bank.

With all that firepower being directed toward that central area, nobody will notice your shots.

Yup, that's a good tactic too :) If you can pull it off.

Strategically it won't work as cleanly now, since you can longer see a Jedi, go to the terminal and pick him out, then go kill him.

All this new system does is allow for that many MORE Jedi to be visible at starports.

Further, there is now no way at all to track a Jedi on Kashyyyk. Therefore, a grinding Jedi is free to grind with little to no discomfort.

Patch 20, although removing Jed Neck mobile homes from equation (theoretically), added so much more to them that being a Jedi today is easier than being a Bounty Hunter lol.

And long, pointless grinds are not a challenge. They are just bad game play.

Agree to an extent but the fact is that the intent of BH missions was never that we'd be able to pick our targets in advance. That was just a feature of a bad bounty system design by SOE initially. As a BH I actually really like the update now that they added that seeker droids give you the name of your target. I have 0 complaints with the BH updates in patch 20 to be honest.

good post, Elnator.

Allowing only MBHs to hunt player Jedi (non-NPC) is a good thing.

The complete lack of the ability to do a bounty hunter mission against a Jedi NPC is totally bizarre to me, and always has been.

The only NPC jedi I've ever seen are those Dark Jedi Masters that I sometimes help kill when someone lures them out to the Mining Outpost on Dantooine.

My name is...

*yawn*
Jedi NPC? What on earth for. Jedi are too damn hard to kill I'm not gonna waste my time tracking down a CL 100+ NPC to kill for a few measly thousand credits when I can go hunt krayts and sell the perls for over a mil.
