I must be the only gamer who normally loves most RPGs of the past 3 decades that doesn't enjoy Dragon Age or Mass Effect in any of it's iterations. I even found the Witcher plodding and boring.  Not sure if it's the controls, the combat or something else.  I miss the days of Baldur's Gate, Final Fantasy 1 - 9.  I've found that only MMOs have kept the feel of the genre alive for me and trying to play "modern" RPGs makes me tired and yearning for more MMOs, lol.

So for me, I'm not looking forward to any of this game and the more news I see or vids on it, the more I see the same "modern" crutches these games have fallen into.  I do read them, in hopes that I see something to change my mind, but so far, nada.  Glad many enjoy or will enjoy this new iteration, I'm just not seeing what all the fuss is about.

And to this article, I give you this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cd13fE5WJ3c

Seems.... rather fitting.

Does it? I'm sorry, but I'm not allowed to be legitimately excited for something in my own column, simply because I'm a member of the press and some press have acted irresponsibly? This is my column, which I've written for something like five years now, where I share my opinion with you all. If you aren't interested in my opinion, don't read my column. No one is forcing you.

Frankly, I don't have an agenda and I don't care for ridiculous overhype. If it looks good to me, I'll tell you why. If it doesn't, I'll also tell you why. Heck, I called out the hype on Destiny in my best/worst E3 article. I also found myself completely baffled at the press excitement over Titanfall. It looked like complete shit to me and I'm not surprised it fell off as quickly as it did. Just because some writers are irresponsible with the voice they've been given doesn't mean it should ruin things for the rest of us, so please don't come in here with your video and dismiss the column because you think it fits neatly with whatever theory you have or agree with about games media.

I loved Mass Effect 3 multiplayer and felt BioWare did a great job of it and wanted to explain why, because of the quality of that product, that I have high hopes for Inquisition's multiplayer. I could be completely wrong and eat crow for it later, but that's a risk I'm willing to take here, because I feel there is a good reason to be positive about Inquisition's multiplayer component and wanted to explain why.

I've seen some kneejerk reactions to this news from DA fans and even personal friends and I wanted to allay some of those concerns in my column this week. It's that simple. All of my points are clearly explained in the column. It's not breathless hype pulled out of the ether. If what I've said make senses to you and you agree, that's great. If you disagree, you're invited to share your thoughts on why.  Tacking on multiplayer is a very common practice these days and it's usually crap, which is (understandably) why gamers react the way they do when they hear multiplayer is being added to a typically singleplayer game series. Normally, I would feel the same way, but since BW did such a bang up job on their ME3 MP and they're doing a lot of the same things here, I felt it was a good opportunity to say, "Hey! Hold on. This could actually be good!"

Damnit MikeB, don't you know you're not allowed to have an opinion other than theirs?!

Therefore I substitute your opinion with my own and that means.... I'm optimistic about the multiplayer too.

Although I was hoping that the multiplayer would run with the story as well and have the option to do the random maps they've discussed. My main concern if/when purchasing this title is if it's going to be confined to a city again like DA:2 or if it will be much more grand and open like DA: 1. I'll have to wait and see regardless.

I haven't done any research on the game so I know little to nothing but what was posted about the multiplayer the other evening.

No.

Nobody is "forced" here. This is playing fast and loose with the term and I don't buy it.

I hear you.

I think it may be because the developers of "modern" games didn't grow up playing pnp rpgs. So while the old rpgs like Baldur's Gate were inspired by D&D, the newer ones are more and more derivative products, and thus have lost a lot of the original mojo.

In my case, just the fact that Bioware has anything to do with this game makes it a major wait-and-see.

DID you play the game?or you just quoting form press releases?yes you have a right to hype what you want in YOUR article, and we have the right to think you full of it as well.your attacking a person, who just posted a link to a video about hype really says a lot about you does it not. care to guess how many games i have bought that ended up crap?but were hyped  by people such as you?wait till the game is OUT and on the shelf before you start talking about it.

i did beta long ago for heroes of might and magic ,we posted for months about issues we saw,and were not only attacked by the developers but fan boys. it came out and within a month they released a patch that addressed all the issues we complained about.but it was hyped over and over.

yes it is your article ,but by the same token we have the right to QUESTION your motives.

Once I got into it, I really loved the ME3 multi-player.   It was the FPS mechanics and the challenge offered by higher ranked matches that made it so appealing.  It was a wonderful opportunity to play the iconic races of the Mass Effect universe and the setting of a "Universe at War for it's own Survival" was perfect for making the events of the multi-player experience feel like it was all woven together into the same epic tapestry as the main story.

Dragon Age doesn't have unique races; instead it has -in my opinion- weaker variants of already well established ones.  Four varieties of only three basic classes is quite a bit less than what ME3 offered, though no doubt the customization present for these will be much higher.  The darkspawn feel largely demystified; Dragon Ages lacks the strong factions that helped define ME3.  Will there be an epic event that your generic soldiers will be a part of, or will the multi-player just  feel like beer & pretzel D&D dungeon crawls?  Will the less FPS focused mechanics of Dragon Age 3 create the same addicting experience of ME3?  Will it be challenging? Or will certain builds and combinations trivialize the feeling of accomplishment?

So, I am hopeful, but I don't think lightning is going to strike twice for BioWare.  Dragon Age is such a weak IP compared to Mass Effect that they aren't building off of nearly as strong of a foundation.

I've been very disappointed with some major releases coming out a bit unfinished and being patched slowly along the way.  Also I don't like DLC content being in a game and unlocked at a later time for extra money.   Not saying DAI will do this but I see it more and more.

So wait and see for me also.  No pre-purchase.  Splinter Cell and ME series are now the only games on my pre-purchase list as they have never let me down for the most part.

If you are going to buy a game after reading one article i think the problem is with you then not the person whojust want to share his excitement.

Why don't they make DA:I a real co-op game instead of this tacked on multiplayer crap.  From what I have read about this game it would be perfect for 2,3, or 4 players in the actual game.

Because either you would lose out on the interaction with your NPC party which is a major part of DA or the game would become trivially easy. I guess they could rebalance a whole game mode around co-op but that's probably very expensive for a large game like this.

why? :- The same reason why ME3 co-op mode was awesome(even though the single player story mode was horrible). I think co-op mode was the only thing eaware did not ask us extra money for, right?

i want an open world, no phasing, no instancing.i want meaningful owpvp.i want player driven economy.i want meaningful crafting.i want awesome exploration, a sense of thrill.i want ow housing with a meaningful effect on my entire gameplay experience, not just some instanced crap.i want all of these free of cost, i don't wanna pay you a cent, game devs can eat grass and continue developing game for me.
Seems like that is the current consensus of western mmo players.

I think it will be a very fun mode. They're pretty smart by adding something like that.

Look at it: most popular MMO's nowadays revolve around raids, group instances and dungeon-crawling. The Dragon Age titles have always played around with the same kind of teamwork that you get to do in an MMO, from a single-player perspective. It has a soft-trinity too because the oldschool RPG experience the first game was ultimately based on had that too.

So they're giving people an experience they normally go to (themepark) MMO's for, within their singleplayer game.

I suspect it will be played a lot.

However, they really need to stop with the RNG loot boxes, they piss me the frak off. BioWare isn't the only offender there, just look at Valve's TF2 etc. It's because of the effing whales who would spend thousands of dollars just to get a chance at that one silly hat in the RNG lottery.

But the devs should take up some responsibility too. Such systems are simply not fun for the rest of the playerbase as potential customers feel tricked and cheated when they get all shit from those RNG lockboxes. Even if it's not related to the game itself, they'd get a lot more happy customers if they sold fun and worthwhile things upfront.

Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!
