I just rewrote the article in less than 200 words.

1. FFA Full Loots rights PVPers

2. Casuals

3. Casuals

4. Casuals

5. Casuals

It isnt just the article though, its all the follow up posts.  Here we are in mmorpg.com and just look at the huge list of all the types of other players that people dont want to play with, the list is growing and getting comprehensive as we sit.

Seriously its like you guys love to play games with other people as long as they are your exact clones and dont do anything on this big list.  I get the point of the article and im saying its got a sour concept behind it maybe people should be thinking about.

I strongly agree with your point that a lot of this behavior has a lot to do with game design issues.

But when it comes to "this person is too chatty" "this person isnt chatty enough" "this person helps too much" "these people arent helpful" "this person thinks they are smart"

JUST LOG OUT ALREADY.  you're just not into people.

===========================================================

 I agree with you man.

I was more responding to what I saw the spirit of the OP's post was, in my mind.  I pretty much ignored those examples I feel are immaterial, which you gave examples of, and tried to focus on things that are an impact.  In my opinion.

Like the "Marathon Man", etc., that actually degrades game play for others.

Otherwise, :D  the /ignore function is the most underused OP skill in the game!  If people used it with the same thrill of control the did with farming, DPS, and CC, they'd be amazed at how quickly they can actually Sub-Channel chat right into perfect alignment.

Anyway, trading of ideas isn't a bad thing. :D

/waves

I disagree.  Trolling, know-it-alls and elitism are seen as anti-social qualities in all walks of life, so why would they not bee seen as the same in games?

I think their are a vocal minority of irritating, maladjusted individuals in most games who can sour the whole community.  But that is the point, they are generally the minority but have a negative impact far beyond their numbers.

You are being very needlessly judgemental of what others enjoy. Some people really enjoy a very achievement oriented playstyle. There's nothing wrong with that. In fact doesn't WS really try to cater to those sorts of players? So the devs have no one but themselves to blame if they run out of content.

Only problem with achievers is when they group with RPers/casual players and are trying to rush them along or  give them orders . People like that should only group with other people like themselves who are just as driven to get things done quickly.

Meh.  I think you both have points, but I believe I'm more in line with the guy you responded to.

It goes hand in hand with what I said before in my original post:  Game mechanics often encourage detrimental behavior.  Note what I mean by that:  not necessarily legislating how people act, that's ridiculous, but encouraging GAME FAILURE dynamics and game play dynamics.

I'll politely disagree with "achievement oriented" people, in the context of this discussion.  It's more the strong desire by many to jump on the fast-farm cycle.

Because it's easy and fast.  Ez-mode.

It gives you the illustion of "achievement", but it's an illusion.  It's fake.

That's why I believe The DPS Meter has been turned into something it was never meant to be, and illustrates the point.  Let's take the idea of an "Achievement Oriented" player! (drum roll):

The Achiever joins a Party.

The Party starts to zone in, The Achiever first in.  He promptly starts running down the corridor ahead of the entire group who's not totally zoned in yet, has the first pack pulled, and is wailing away with AoE's, etc.

The Group finally completes zoning in, strung out in sequence based on zone in, running for The Achiever who's in trouble, but not dead yet, mobs running every which way chasing him/her.

The Group bails The Achiever out, the pack manages to die, yet just before the last mob is dead, and prior to any recovering heals or group buffs The Achiever is already RACING to the next pack.

Rinse and repeat through the whole run.

This is great suckage in games today, that challenges are CALIBRATED to encourage this.  To discourage necessary Teamwork.  It's encouraged when we see event rewards tiered by DPS / Damage Done and/or with in-game reports showing "#1" as most DPS done.

The Achiever, in his mind, was "achieving".  Yet he/she did so at the expense of everyone else around them.  So, did they really Achieve anything?

This is what I think the poster you responded to meant, and why I think your estimation of an 'Achiever", in context with fast farming through content, isn't targeted well I think.  It's not real (in the context of this convo).

In the end, if games are going to cater to feeding ez-mode farm running through stuff, instead of actually CALIBRATING challenges to require . . . actually achieving something through skill or strategy or smart tactics (instead of dumb race forward fap-spamming), it's never going to change.

Wherever you go, there you are.

I hate Min/Maxers or Statjunkies or Spreadsheet Warriors, whichever you prefer to call them. The ones who have calculated all the variables and will instruct you on how you have built your character and geared them in an unoptimized fashion. This was especially heinous in FFXI with job combinations. I mean I can understand if it is your guild raid coordinator giving you friendly advice, but when it is just a random jackass calling you ignorant, screw that.

The other one I dislike is the PvPBlamer. They want to blame everyone else on the team for a losing bout and take no responsibility on themselves, even when their stats look like crap. The other type here is the Kill Counter, completely ignores PvP objectives (which usually garners more reward) in favor of just running up a kill count at the detriment or even loss to the team.

I would like to give an opinion on this post, but if I agree I will offend people who disagree. While if I disagree my comment will be seen as inflammatory. Either way I will get banned by this site full of the most delicate flowers in online gaming. Ban people for giving honest opinions... beautiful. Unfortunately I still like the articles.

haha, yes, the pvp blamer is irritating as hell.  As soon as your team starts losing they start calling out 'bunch of noobs' to deflect attention away from their own terrible performance.

There are also many people in mmo's who simply do not understand that in competitive gameplay one team has to win and another has to lose (ignoring draws).  They seem to think that every loss means their team is awful and everyone in it is a noob, rather than understanding that however well you play circumstances or tactics may just go against you.

The number 2) *Insert Cricket Noise Here* is quite a good exemple of the number 1 annoyance  for non-English speaking country natives playing on international games when it comes to MMO players : the eveybody should speak English type of player.

Because it is well known from English speaking people that English is the "world" language isn't it ? Well, in fact, it isn't. Sure it is the language that most of the people coming from different countries use for business. But this is for people that have to do business with foreigners. And what percent of a non-English speaking country does it represents exactly ? Maybe 1% ? Because in the daily life of the vast majority of non-English speaking country natives, you ll never have to speak English.

And, of course, those that complain about people not speaking in English only speak English. So they ask for the others to compensate their lack of knowledge by speaking the only language that they understand. Why bothering yourself at learning something when you can ask others to do it for you ?...

So the *Everybody should speak Enlish type of player* is definitely the worst kind of player that i may encounter when playing a MMO on an international server.

Just report them as bots, because that's all they are if they don't speak.

It's my right not to talk to you, nothing says I have to.  Sometimes I just want to play by myself but in your logic, I have to play how you want me to play.

If someone talks to you on a dungeon run and you choose to ignore him/her it may be your self appointed right  to do so but you better face the consequences. It's not my intention  to call you names but for the sake of discussion I need to point out in that moment from everyones else perspectiveyou are being literaly a retard. If that's how you like to be perceived, than fine you're free to do so.

And don't forget being in online environment together with other people also comes with a certain amount of responsibility. I know some never learn about it and that there's a lot of kids around but that doesn't mean it's any less important.

I agree (I am English) on an international server, anyone who cannot abide any other language is a fool.

However, a common language is often needed, and given the prevalence of English as a first or second language in so many countries it seems the natural language to choose.

Great article.   Would love to see a follow-on article that addresses personality types in guilds!   MMOs are such interesting things and a reason why I play them.

That would be my 2 most annoying types, too.

Advice I ask for is welcome. Number crunchers (min/maxers) can go to hell, in my opinion. I play concepts with my characters and so many "Elitists" and "Know-It-Alls" just do not get that.

Great list, by the way. Of course, with the influx players come the influx of these player types.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

I don't let any type of player bother me when I'm playing.  I play for fun.  When I start to get annoyed ... I log off. But, I do enjoy beating the crap out of an elitist.  They tend to underestimate me because I'm a girl and pretty laid back.

Way back in the day, I was playing a character, I was minding my own business when I get a whisper saying that I'm "playing wrong". I of course, sent a whisper back "How can I play wrong, I'm playing how I want to play". They then proceeded to say that my gear was all wrong, how I was supposed to have a shield, ect...

I simply replied, I have no problem playing the game, and that the designers made options available for a reason. If they didn't want players to experiment we would simply have a template that we play instead of a tree that skills can be chosen from.

To me, it IS these 5 that ruin my fun in an mmoRPG. You play your way, I play mine, don't force your way on me, unless you want to pay for my account. then I guess I have no real problem

Hint - they are the same people.

It's the psychology of the sports fan - they love their team and fans of their team - hate other teams and fans of other teams.

Replace sports teams with games - it's the same psychology.

Yeah, that would annoy me if I was on an international server and someone griped about not everyone speaking English.  But when someone comes onto NA servers, its' really annoying when they don't speak English.  I liked playing FFXI with multiple language players and that the developers put a translator into the games chat function.

Alot of people here a misunderstanding the "crickets" point, thinking that just because they don't talk that they fall into this category.  What the point refers to is that bloke you party with in a dungeon or in the real world that you try to start a conversation with or ask them what they need help with or anything and they don't respond.  No emotes, no chat, nothing.  Yet they are running around doing stuff.  Worst is when they go and start pulling mobs in dungeons when they aren't the tank or running off in a different direction for quest objectives as if you aren't there.  It's like...well why did you even join the party or invite me?  *boggled*

My top 2 list:

1. Gankers. The high levels who kills your newly created toon, and when someone talks about it on any forum, their only defense is "learn to play". Worst idiots out there. And there are many of them.

2. Elitists / e-peen'ers

Definitively the worst ones.

Fanboys are the worst.

Haters are even worse.

LMAO

Hint - they are the same people.

It's the psychology of the sports fan - they love their team and fans of their team - hate other teams and fans of other teams.

Replace sports teams with games - it's the same psychology.

As long as you realize that you are team TRION, I'm ok with your bullshit psychology.

SWTOR is the greatest mmo ever!

5. Notorious AFKers:

They turn AFK in the middle of a dungeon for 10 minutes without a comment. They are standing around in battlegrounds to farm honour-points. You wanted to invite somebody into your group? You posted an important question in your guild-channel? Haha, is AFK and leaves you alone in sometimes delicate situations, where you get whispers and invites from other people.

4. Ignorants:

They do not pay attention to any kind of game-mechanics. They constantly pull mobs and try to bomb them. They are damage dealers but make less damage than the tank. They never use any kind of crowd control and they ignore important mechanics of their very own class. But they want every loot that drops, of course. They do not listen to any hints you give them. And if there are wipes, they just blame the healer or the tank.

3. Arrogant tank/healer douchebags:

They know that grouping would be impossible without them, and they keep telling you that throughout the whole dungeon. They often make mistakes, but somehow find a way to always blame it on everybody else. They are patronizing and thin-skinned, which makes communicating with them a very annoying experience. In the end they provoke a senseless argument over nothing and leave the group just before the last boss.

2. PvP Cheater-Exploiters:

They know all the tricks and bugs one can abuse especially in battlegrounds. They use all of these to their advantage all the time. If it was a real life card board game I could hit them with my fist, but in an anonymous online-game everything is possible. I have played a lot of games in my life, but I have never met such an amount of cheating as in MMOs.

1. Elite raider show offs:

They are telling all the time, that MMOs are much too easy these days, that nobody knows how to play them correctly. That it was best when they had classic Naxxramas on farm-status (which was only true for 0.01% of all players, but somehow I have met thousands of players who pretend that their old raid-guilds completed Naxx and AQ40). However, they never stop playing only to just lament all day and blame everything on these evil casual-noobs, who seem to have invaded the MMO-world.

Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need.

Hehhee OP threw the first stone and now all elitists shout in choir. NOBODY of you are clean. You have mmo sins. In mmo games there are people from prisons and schools, different cultures and religions. You can expect that there are both bad and good and all between. But it is nice to be there and see all that, isn't it ? In real life some of those players would kill you or rob you. In game world you only loose some pleasure. And when you meet one nice player - wow. My biggest sin is this mute. I talked earlier to many. Mostly they were gays looking krhm company (especially in asian games), once even a real terrorist recruiting. It makes you silent. You don't know who you talk to. Female are often men and vice versa. And I'm slow in writing. So all silent or aggressive or proud elitist heroes or whatever you are - don't care. Just play and enjoy.

The mistake that the party made here was in bailing out "the achiever."  Anyone who runs off and pulls before the rest of the party zones in deserves to die, and hopefully the game has at least some level of death penalty.

Any time someone decides to unilaterally control the pace like that tends to be last in line for heals from the healer.  Oh I am sorry, I was focusing on the tank.  IE the one who is supposed to be getting hit by the monsters.

If people just let this kind of player die, then they would stop doing the behavior.  When it rewards them with a highest DPS reward while having everyone else have a bad time, they are encouraged the other way.

Note: this assumes you are not in a rush group that has specifically said this was the style you would be using.  In a dungeon on complete farm status, chain pulls are the most efficient way to handle it.
