I do believe that those events need to change the rules on the games they give awards to.  If the game isn't in beta (maybe alpha) then they can be looked at but before that stage they should not get any awards expect maybe most anticipated game.

BTW, winning best in show is pretty easy considering how low a bar the rest of the market is setting.

I think everyone is really, really getting tired of rehashing the same old ideas.

Let's face it , different rules of journalism/reporting, whatever you wish to call it, apply to big name companies like Sony.  If it was a smaller , less known company, we all know how this would be handled.

You do realize that the very  E3 award I am questioning  played a huge part in that right?

It was number 1 before the award was given.

Firstly, do you know exactly what they were shown or have been told? TTH played an earlier version of EQ3, maybe they knew more then or now than we do, I have no clue.

Second, it was "best in show" not "best upcoming", maybe it should of been the other or even both, what I do know is it's pretty sad that a possible pre-alpha tech demo out did games about to be released and that says a lot. Should they have excluded it from the runners? Maybe, but I'm not going to write an email to the review board and complain.

Honestly don't know why you care as others have said. I don't care what the hype meter reads or what any site says. I have my own eyes and opinion. Seems your are just reaching for anything to complain about at this point. You seem like a bright gamer, no idea why you would put any stock in any reviewer, site, judge, whatever. Do you really play games based on who wins these meaningless awards?

You seem to strongly dislike EQN, yet keep going on and on about it. EQN must be pretty bad if people have to go out of their way to make a point of it to save everyone else from falling into the trap.

Here's something from EQN er I mean Disney for you...

Does it really matter? Its an award from two out of probably thousands of mmo websites..... big deal

If you actually put stock in these types of awards I just don't even know what to say.

Yet back at E3 2013 - two reputable sites gave it the best *GAME* of the show award.

I wonder if they knew the true state of the "game" they were shown if they would have changed their minds.

The state of EQNext back at e3 2013 was pre-tech-concept demo at best.

First of EQ:N deserved best of the show. Anyone with his head not still stuck in WoW will tell you so.

These games take long time to make. Especially ones as ambitious as EQ:N

2013 state of the game was not pre-tech concept, because very soon after EQ:L alpha was launched.

As for what we seen now. It still looks very much alpha. Take it as you wish.

All I can say that EQ:L engine is pretty impressive. And such open world was not seen in MMOs before, and is something we always wanted.

So patience is due. I dont think game will see release for at least one or even two years.

It's an opinion, who cares? Nothing to be sour about, it's a meaningless award for a meaningless topic. It's all glitz and hype, I can't believe you even brought it up. What was it going up against, that was so much better than what they saw?

Why?  Everyone who is anything and anyone who knows about these things knew EQN was early in its developmental cycle.  I said it last year as well as numerous other people that EQN is a good 4-5 years away.  The life cycle of a Triple-A MMO developmental stage is 4 years at best.  I said it last year that this game wouldn't release till 2016 at the earliest and 2017 wouldn't be a stretch.  I also agree with the rightful awards this tile got because if they can pull it off it will have earned them 10 fold.  I am one who refuses to hype a game but EQN, if they deliver a tenth of what is promised will be a game changer and I for one and extremely anxious to see the end result.

If your idea of a Sandbox is open FFA Full Loot PvP, full crafted world with minimal support for anything combat then your sandbox ideas are bad! Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

Landmark and EQN use the same engine PS2 uses in fact the engine was originally developed for EQN but they wiped the slate 2 times during development so PS2 actually came out years before EQN when it was suppose to be the other way around.   Forgelight is impressive though it is also being used in H1Z1.

Landmark is basically the testing ground for EQN. They are not going to do squat with EQN until they get what they need out of landmark. It's an atypical way of developing, I know, but in the end may be the smarter way to go about it.

Normally:

develop mmo --> test mmo --> make continual updates/fixes --> release

SOE:

hype EQN --> develop landmark --> test landmark --> make continual updates/fixes to landmark --> ? EQN development

DMKano:

You asked:  Should game sites allow journalists to change their stories after new facts come to light?

IMHO:  to answer your specific question; NEVER!!!   That would be a basic violation of the principle to report truth.

If, on the other hand what you meant to say was - Should game sites allow journalists to update their stories after new facts come to light?

I believe the answer to that is: Always.  updating preserves the historical record and allows for correction of facts and the evolution of analysis and opinion based on new data.  Depending on what changed it may also shine a spotlight on the cockroaches of the game development/publishing world by exposing that some of them misrepresented the truth.....  (more that reasonably expected at a PR event like E3) (I'm sure you're all "shocked" at the possibility that a dev/pub would misrepresent the truth just to make some money....)  This said, updating also tells the consumers of these sites something about the authors, depending on which ones bother to make the effort to correct things when they find things.

I have a life, its just different from yours.....

I agree OP..  I have never seen Car & Driver or Motor Trend give out "car of the year" awards to concept cars..  There should be a standard IMO.. For any game to be in consideration, it "MUST" release within a certain time frame such as 12 months.. or by Dec 31, XXXX.. The Academy doesn't give out Oscars that are still in production, do they?  LOL

David Georgesson said also in another interview with MMORPG the other day that he guessed EQ Next is ~60% complete. So it will be another 2 years or so until it's finished. 8O

Is there any definition of the award and related rules?

If not, then they are pretty much allowed to give that award to anything that is presented at the show. We cannot objectively assess whether giving the award to a "game" at this development stage violates any rules.

However, what we can do is that we can shape our opinion on what the meaning and value of the award is.

I personally consider the award to have as much value as any other post on this forum saying "At the show, I liked game X the most".

i agree, considering they said they scrapped 3 previous iterations and we're bringing a heap of previously undeveloped tech into the game.. i dont see why anyone got any ideas that even an alpha would be out this year... from everything they were saying it make it seem pretty clear not to expect an alpha to 2016.. maybe late 2015, but people got their panties in a knot and super sized their own expectations and are not all bent out of shape because there is no EQN this year...

To be honest and seeing you post a lot in AA threads, it seems like you're just butthurt because EQN is taking some of the spotlight off your lovechild AA, which you defend and white knight every chance you get, which i personally think (if it was shown at E3 last year) doesnt deserve a best in show award anyway.

i agree, considering they said they scrapped 3 previous iterations and we're bringing a heap of previously undeveloped tech into the game.. i dont see why anyone got any ideas that even an alpha would be out this year... from everything they were saying it make it seem pretty clear not to expect an alpha to 2016.. maybe late 2015, but people got their panties in a knot and super sized their own expectations and are not all bent out of shape because there is no EQN this year...

The OP is questioning the value of the award and eligibility of games which are at an "idea generation" phase of development to receive that award.

I wonder why some people post to threads the topic of which they cannot comprehend.

Because I think both MMORPG and Tentonhammer were frankly *swindled* - if they knew that EQNext wasn't even going to be in pre-alpha *a year and a half later* - yeah I don't think they would have even considered it as a valid candidate.

Interestingly enough, back in 2013 I never expected this game to release any time before 2016, why were you or anyone else expecting anything different?

BTW, winning best in show is pretty easy considering how low a bar the rest of the market is setting.

i can completely comprehend what he is saying... and the award was given by a 3rd party site not governed by any official rules, so therefore the award is completely subjective to what the site owners / operators deem worthy, if they felt that EQN was  the most well presented, promising, compelling etc... demo / presentation that they saw, then it is completely up to them to report so. Just because you dont agree doesnt mean in their eyes it wasnt the case.

I am personally not interested in EQN i dont think it's going to be any good and i dont think sony can pull of what they're saying they can... But if MMORPG feels that it was best in show, so be it. What they saw was enough for them to feel that it was warranted regardless of your personal feelings about the state of the game.
