1. About the f2p-I Know what is locked and what isn't locked(played it hm...3 years ago or so), but some basic questions. How many characters/server? Where is the server located? How much effort does it take to unlock not all things per se, but things such as expansions etc(I REALLY don't need every area, but need RK{not quite sure about this one} and story areas)? Anything other I should Know about(such as is anything forbidden just because of the f2p outside of the expansion material)? Wardrobe slots/dyes etc all functional?

2. How's it holding up in general?

3. I had characters on EU servers before. What's up with them? Eh...I ask this because they are most likely taking up my names(this one included!). And if I'd start again, I'd start from the scratch. Landroval ofc.

4. How about animations/character models? Are they still as stiff as they used to be? You get used to them, but still...

5. Singleplayer value(story, immersion, LoTR feel)?

The European (Codemasters) servers closed a couple years ago. If you had characters on those, and didn't move them at the time, they are now gone. I believe all the servers are now located in the US. I think everything is free up to about level 20. The areas after that have to be bought, or you have to sub (I'm not 100% sure because I'm not f2p). I think you can do all of the book quests, no matter what area they are in.

Some of the servers are more populated than others. I know Landroval is, and I think Brandywine is. I'm not sure about the others.

The game has changed in to a mostly single player MMO. You don't need groups now to complete a lot of it. Even several of the fellowship only quests now have a single player option. In my opinion, the game has been dumbed down, making it a lot easier than what it used to be.

LotRO and questions, my favourites :)

Char.slots: 2 for f2p, 3 for premium (former vips too, like yourself), 5 for vip, +2 for the Moria box, and +2 for the special Mirkwood edition which I don't remember (adventure? dunno). You can buy more in the store, up to 18 slots I think. It's not server-locked like TOR, so for example f2p means 2 characters on every server. (and the TP balance is counted for the account, so f2p's can easily play on their main server and farm TP's on a less crowded other server)

All servers are now in somewhere around Boston.

Unlock all: depends on a lot of things, like the date, the sales, etc. I wrote earlier in an another thread that a buddy of mine went from scratch to a (almost) full unlock with about $60. Without any grind, just with good timing. There are numerous guides on optimal routes.

Forbidden for f2p: just the PvMP freep side. All the rest is available.

Wardrobe: 20 free slots for vips, 0 free slots for premium / f2p. All 3 can buy more slots in the store.

Holding up: pretty nicely. Population is still good, Update13 will go live tomorrow, housing revamp is planned this year, etc. Anniversary festival is almost here, player events are frequent (just yesterday there was a musical one, with classical pieces on the list, it was awesome...  https://www.lotro.com/forums/showthread.php?545722-The-Starlight-Orchestra-In-Concert-12th-April )

Eu servers... khm... that could be an issue if you were absent since the f2p switch. Not due to the character names. When Turbine put their hands on our servers and dragged them over the Atlantic, we had to transfer our Codies account to Turbine. The window was open for (I guess) more than a year, with numerous letters and announcements on the side. If you haven't transferred your account, there's a chance you won't be able to reach your characters now.

Animations: there was some slight changes, but yep, stiff as a stick :)  ok, not that bad, but... still :)

Singleplayer: during the last 1-2 years they turned towards single mode heavily. So - while not mandatory, grouping is still fun - you can solo almost the whole game through. Story is nice, from tomorrow on we can session-play Treebeard, can't wait for it ;)

edit: a minor correction to cormach's post, Eu servers were transferred and not closed. All your data is still there, but if you haven't made the account transfer, you can't reach it since you have a Codies account (they don't run LotRO anymore) and you don't have a Turbine one. You can try the Account support, there's a (slight) chance they can help you.

So, TWO characters PER GAME? Are you fking kidding me? And they call EA greedy. Back when it used to be 2 characters/server(in EU-CM run). and I still had an issue with it. Only one more for Premium(Tor gives you 4 more), ZERO wardrobe slots(I remember having 2 @ the CM-this means hello clown suits in a LoTR game!), my names prolly taken(by me no less-why couldn't they just delete a 3 year old character O.o) etc...

It is a fine game, but the greed. OMG T3h GR33d!!! And no, it doesn't compare favourably to TOR in any way so guess which gets the sub(TOR is simply better Themepark and less greedy).

Why do all the creeps get all the best franchises O.o? WHY???

It's per server, not per game.

Damn, sorry, I tried to edit out all the error, which I typed... I left out an "each". 2/3/5 etc. character slots on EACH server ofc.

Also there's seems a mix-up, wardrobe slots are where you put your outfits for every character of yours, so it's not clogging your inventory, for example you put a nice cloak in your wardrobe and then all of your character can wear that cloak cosmetically. I guess what you referred up there is the cosmetic slot, where you store different outfits for your character above your actual armour, and switching between them, or hide them if you like (unlike TOR's headpiece :) ) Free / premium gets 2 of those, (vip gets 2 as well and everyone can purchase up to 7), so above your armour you can wear 2 cosmetic set-up for free. (*)

Names aren't taken (I don't think I ever heard name snatching in LotRO, the only time the name is "taken" if someone reports your name and the GM decides it really is inappropriate, then you have to change it. They don't take inactive names). I'd worry the account status more if the transfer was missed out.

(*) edit: easier by this way http://youtu.be/nWjYc-P1yaI  I think you ment this one, everyone gets 2 of these slots for free. Wardrobe is like a shared vault, where you can store up to 120 outfits for all of your characters, and with being some sort of an upgraded inventory for holding your extra items, it costs for the free players some TPs.

I don't care about my account. I forgot all about it lol. I just care that my names are not taken(I am VERY attached to those Elves and if I must use their last names/nicks I will, but I prefer first names{understandably so}).

Besides I plan to create another account anyhow. I just can't pay for anything seeing how TOR takes the bulk of what I'm willing to spend on the MMOs(or at least it'll remain so until I level a character to max). That's from where the "ease of earning the Turbine Points" question sprang up.

I mean I love LoTR and all, but if it's too locked/too difficult to unlock things, it won't fly. Simple as that.

edit: yes, I meant that one. The quintessential part of every RPG imo. Now if only you made me happy and told me that names were handled STO way(by the way of unique account name, not by the way of unique character name) that'd be too much :P also, how's the ping for EU players?

2 characters per server for f2p before Moria. Some 2 (?) additional toons if Moria expansion (not quest pack) is purchased. Additional slots mayt be purchased with Lotro store, up to ~20 toons.

Unlock depends on your goals and strategy.  Example: you need region X which costs 795 Turbine points. You can make several disposable toons. Say, each toon grinds 110 Turbine points:hence 8 toons, each living for some 2 hours. You may heavily invest your time and grind high lvl reputation items. 1 faction - 122 rep.items - 50 Turbine points.

f2p cannot use swift travel, only VIPs/premiums. Also, Helms Deep epic should be purchased even by VIPs.

2. How's it holding up in general?

Mixed opinions. Some are accusing Turbine that many players left after Helms Deep expansion due to lack of "challenge and raiding". Some are happy with Riders of Rohan and Helms Deep. I personally am quite happy with the game.

3. I had characters on EU servers before. What's up with them? Eh...I ask this because they are most likely taking up my names(this one included!). And if I'd start again, I'd start from the scratch. Landroval ofc.

Turbine usually do not take name. Servers are in the US now, EU or US - difference only in server population. I advice to log in and see how your toons are living.

4. How about animations/character models? Are they still as stiff as they used to be? You get used to them, but still...

I guess they are all the same.

5. Singleplayer value(story, immersion, LoTR feel)?

My personal 2 cents: I like it. Cannot judge by comparing books to movies and both to Lotro...but for me it is good. Especially Rohan region where you can see war and lossess and feel compassion for all those folks. Shire is typical Hobbitses place, green and peacefull.  Moria is something in between: it is either hated or praised.

Then your only concern is whether your planned name is taken by someone else or not. This "someone else" can't be you, I don't think Turbine is still storing the data of former Codies characters after years... maybe on some old backup, but not in the game. So if you make a new Turbine account and start over, your former account won't reserve and take those names. Other players might have... There was an external website where you could inspect characters (and with it names too) from outside the game, with that it'd be easy to check whether there are characters in the game with your planned names or not - but that's gone with the last big forum update.

Well, as I wrote above, it depends on many things. If you want to hunt down creeps in pvp, that's a vip-only. Everything else is available for free players. It can be achieved totaly free with TP farming, or with cash if you don't like the grind. There are many optimized routes for both ways (like that buddy I mentioned, I guess he maxxed out the cash way :) ~$60 for the whole game, expansions included, with 5 fully unlocked characters, that's a very good price).

"ease of earning the Turbine Points" there are also many routes with different focuses(? or focii? lol, never liked latin), if you like the speed, I guess the best one I've heard is around 300TP / day, man that must be a horrid grind... If you don't even care and just play the game the normal way, it's between 40-80 TP per area you get "automatically", on the side (with finishing quests, deeds, explorations during the normal gameplay).

Prices in the store are between 10 and 4000ish TP, with frequent sales, for example at the moment Helm's Deep is on a 50% one because today's Update 13 is heavily built on HD's story. That means 2150 TP, with the speedy route that's about a week and you get that expansion for free. (not, because the sale won't last a week, just made a point with that :) )

In LotRO's case I agree :) I usually don't care about the looks (except for rp), but in LotRO I love the cosmetic system, it's huge. I mean I never attended in the fashion events so far, but I do collect stuff just for their cosmetic value and changing the looks pretty often :) (heck, during Winterstock there was even a mounted fashion show, because you can outfitting your steeds as well for matching your outfit).

Names, nope, I guess that's a Cryptic-only thing, great one btw, especially the cross-game chat and mail function it allows as a side-effect. In LotRO your characters are totally separated individuals, of course you can make a family of them if you like, but if you don't, then each of them is on his/her own. Also not tied to your account in any way.

(lol, at the server transfer it even raised some concerns, because at that time the afforementioned external webpage was still functioning on Turbine's side, and many feared that via that page folks could connect the characters to the accounts if Codies's data will be updated to that site as well :) since you can have characters on opposing kins, or creep characters who are the worst enemies of your own kin, but so far nobody knew those are played by you as well.  In STO if you log out with your starfleet and log back with your klingon, even the /reply messages and IMs will be redirected to you, and all of your fleet sees that you're back on - on the other side :) )

Ping, I wrote against it many many times, but if you weren't actively play around the transfer, you probably won't notice it. It's about 50-70ms higher than it was, it was a pain in the rear to readjust with the warden, but it's not a gamebreaking issue even in raids. On PvMP, dunno, I haven't played that since years :) (and with a free account you won't either, max. on the creep side)

Who cares about the PvP? There's enough of it around in other genres.

Yes, I expected some 125-ish ms ping. That shouldn't be bad unless if you're playing something twitch based(Warden? Raid?). Especially not for me(nothing that twitchy that I want to play. Loremaster/Champion/Guardian/Hunter-story only so...)

Thanks for the answers!

It's ok even for wardens, it only was tough right after the transfer, we were used to the Eu ping and suddenly it was higher. It took a few weeks to adapt... at least for me. But since you were gone since years, and the game is changed a lot as well (with the trait and skill changes in HD), you'll see it as a new player, and most likely you won't even notice the additional ping.

So, I ended up stranded(Tor doesn't want my money???¿¿¿) and I've got a question:

What do you get for subbing beyond the 500 TP/month and 5 slots?

Destiny points. You can buy some very pretty things with them.

Swift travel (available after you become Premium)

Rest xp: you get some nice blue bar that adds to xp as you gain standard one

Every region up to Moria for free, as long as you are VIP

I think everything is free up to about level 20. The areas after that have to be bought, or you have to sub (I'm not 100% sure because I'm not f2p). I think you can do all of the book quests, no matter what area they are in.

Some of the servers are more populated than others. I know Landroval is, and I think Brandywine is. I'm not sure about the others.

The game has changed in to a mostly single player MMO. You don't need groups now to complete a lot of it. Even several of the fellowship only quests now have a single player option. In my opinion, the game has been dumbed down, making it a lot easier than what it used to be.

Hi, am not saying it will still work, but my brother was able to recover his character long time after the transition from the  codemaster's servers. I mean, when it officially should be possible. He just wrote to support. Also, I noticed, that you can for example mail the characters which should be lost and you can't use their name for new chars, so they are still there in database somewhere.

That's the only reason I subbed for a month. Traveling in LOTRO without swift travel is tedious. :)

The more I think of it, the less intelligent the idea of going around and telling EVERYONE your first name seems(now now, the Yoda grammar in me strong is :P ). Nicks seem as a more intelligent approach(idk, maybe I'm too accustomed to Warhammer?). Therefore, the names(all but one-this one :((( ) shouldn't be important.

So, you do get all the Eriador zones? Including Forochel, Fornost etc? In other words everything pre Hadhodrond?

If you're going for the vip route, then yes, vips gets everything from the base game - I must add, nowadays even the elves call it Moria :)

But it works just like the old-fashioned subscription way, so you don't "get" those areas, only rent them. If you stop subbing, you can finish your open quests and deeds in those areas, but can't take new ones.

On the other hand, if you're free / premium, and purchase them from the store, you'll have them unlocked forever (or until the game's shutting down, dunno which will arrive first. My bet is on shutdown, forever seems a bit long shot ;) )

Forochel is a zone, Fornost is not, that's part of the North Downs area, so if you seek Fornost in the store, it's included with the North Downs purchase.

Don't get me started about the movies(Elrond not being able to pronounce Gandalf/Isildur right O.o )...

Thank you for all the info. I should dive into it the next month or so. For now I'll buy sth else + that means I'll have to play sth Truly Free(Gosh I must be a master of deception :) ).

But I'll be sure to check back on the M-E(ME is Mass Effect :/). The best fantasy alongside the Warhammer <3

Wasn't referring the movies, simply after Durin (VI) fell to the Balrog, everyone called it Moria throughout the Third Age, just as in the game's present :)

Truly free is not a problem for a starter account, the cost-efficient route of 1month vip is also suggest to make two characters you want to play, and level them to 30-32 (at the end of Lone Lands) for free. Only after that start your first month of vip, the areas between 30 and 50 opening up, and you can play them through with both during that month (and also unlocking everything on those characters, gold cap, trait slots, travel, etc.).

I was referring to Aion. The truly free game.

Sometimes you've got to be literal. :)
