A great game is great regardless of the payment model.

A crappy game is crappy no matter what the payment model.

Same goes for mediocre games.

The common issue of failing games is - game quality, the payment model is irrelevant.

 

Make a kick ass game and players will flock to it no matter what the payment model is.

well, TSW had a nice storry and stuff, but all of a sudden, it was gone. it ended. 

if they would have continued it faster (and i do not mean raids), maybe they would have more subs :)

I will say this again and again, just because they make it free to play, does not make it fun.  It has to be fun to play.  There are so many free to log in games now days you have to make a fun game, and a store that has something in it worth spending cash on.

I could log into Aoc, or TSW any day I wanted, however the fun boat for both of those games has long since set sail. There is no reason for me to log in.

I really want to like this game. It's well made for sure. Unfortunately I really hate conspiracy theory BS so that makes the setting itself pretty uninteresting to me but I suppose I will give it another try sometime.

Back in the sub days people played on equal terms (not based on the size of their irl wallets). Everybody had the same equal access to all the content in the game (not taking expansions into account) which meant that the developers had to make a good game to keep people subbed. And they did. Npwadays games are made for the whales, and the whales only. The rest just flock to it because it's free. Nomatter the glass wall they have to climb.

Competition and free enterprise is good for everyone except when it done sneaky like.Sort of like Politicians giving all those BS speeches to get in then it becomes nothing but lies or deceit.

The F2p aka cash shop rmt idea was the first wave now devs look for fancy terms and wording to entice gamer's.The reality is gaming in mmorpgs has not changed aside from graphics the core game play is still the same in every game,yet each and every dev will give you some polished speech about WHY you should play their game.

BS speeches like play our game because "We listen to our gamers" or "we built this game for YOU" or "we are removing the faulty part of past games and giving it to you BETTER".

Truth is players are still vee lining for yellow markers,still doing super easy meaningless quests "If we can even call them quests"more like errands and click a few super obvious triggers.Then after players have worn out that singular boring game design the dev and every one of them seek to have you chase meaningless gear that is no longer relevant because you already finished the boring errands and quests.

In reality a lot of this success is about LUCK and those fancy worded speeches and simple acceptance of the developer as well as timing of course.

Funcom can blame themselves because all they did was join the same ruckus of games all doing the same thing,so it becomes a crap shoot if you succeed,not a SMART business plan if you ask me.

The whole genre including Funcom needs to lose the levels and gear progression as the ONLY reason players login to the games.In real life we watch a movie or play sports or do hobbies,we come away usually happy about our FUN past times.In gaming it is more like a follow the dots design once done then frantically look for some small reason to keep coming back.

IMO every single one of these developers do not have the guts or know how or budget to make a Triple A HQ game,every one of them including Funcom are just in it for the profits,a business nothing more.You can NEVER do your best when profit margins are at risk.Bottom line is success will remain a crap shoot.

Yea this is my take to.  I left TSW a month after launch because I just never could get into it than came back a few years later and picked it back up and had a blast playing around with builds and leveling but than it just sort of ends.  I got the new issues and did all the newer stuff but I hate scenarios so my only other options is repeating the same daily quests over and over hoping to get rare items I can sell to buy better gear, grinding dungeons with a community that is obsessed with the parse, or grind in PVP for tokens to buy gear.

Even with Tokyo coming someday that content will be tuned for all the 10.4's with full augments in the world rather than those people in 9 and 10 blues with maybe a purple 10.1 or two so it's not going to be accessible at all to anyone who hasn't been grinding dungeons/PVP for the past 6 months and scenario running.

Fact of the matter is Funcom cannot release a new MMO without glaring problems. 

Anarchy Online was by far one of the worst MMO releases i have ever had the displeasure of suffering through, sure later on that game got a ton of awards, but it still shot itself in the foot.

Age of Conan, i mean seriously where do i begin with that game and all its faults and failures ? Funcom banked on players wanting a visceral and MATURE  themed MMO. Sexist or not we wanted naked NPC's Naked chracter's ... What we got was a few boob shots that later were removed, zero visceral combat, and a goofy Dance Dance Revolution type of combat that just made alot of us think WTF ? And don't even get me started on Tortage vs. The rest of the game fiasco.

The Secret World, great concept, not as nearly as bad a launch as AoC or AO, but still had a few hiccups. GodAwful stiff manikin like avatars, and no matter who wants to appologize for Funcom they are still stiff and bleh bleh bleh. Then you get into the game and its really over long before most MMO's are now. Funcom also released TSW right around the same time as when Guild Wars 2 came out, not really a good idea in my book, delaying it and improving the character models might have been a huge plus.

In the end weather Funcom adds in features it promised and then broke promises, gamers remember, and we seldom let others forget, when it comes to Video Games, especially MMO's you have to hit the nail on the head the first time, not years later.

For me,  TSW had some of the best quests/stories I've seen in any MMO.  So much so that I made the impulsive decision to buy two lifetimes-- one for me and my hubby.  Unfortunately, the honeymoon was over all too quickly.  I did every darned quest in that game, some multiple times, maxed out my ability wheel, worked on achievements, PVPed, did instances, etc.   I really did try to drag out the content as long as possible and I'm more of a casual player always lagging behind others.  Alas though, for me it had very little staying power and replayability.   Some things like the ugly character models, clunky auction house/bank system, no in depth crafting, and general lack of other things outside combat got very tiring.  The game had such potential and that is probably why I made my impulse lifetime purchases.  Really a shame.

 

These days, I just log into do the new issues since I love the story.  Once I finish them, I log off again for several months.  Fantastic short term MMO but not enough to keep me around.  Unfortunately, I see no one I played with at launch still around although the world, at least Argatha, seems busy with people running groups.  At this point, I'm just a casual tourist  popping in and out and trying to get my money's worth before the game shuts down completely.  Maybe I will be wrong but just a gut feeling.

It's probably more about burnout.

 

With so many titles claiming to be F2P, people now are just hopping from one game or another, with little emotional investment in a game, but a month or so to kill time (e.g., Blizzard nerfed their main and they need a fix. Games like EvE and LoL see an uptick in players when Blizzard makes a boneheaded patch move, for example. But as soon as their main can play again, back to the nest they go).

 

Publishers will see this effect especially just before WoD is released and launch day, and then how the players see which classes got the nerf hammer (if it's a very popular class, like paladins, more so), and their reaction to it. Bad WoW patch/implementation/policies, the competitors' games increase in players.

 

The best these other publishers can hope for is Blizzard making more Cata decisions (e.g., a blue tells the population to "l2p"...really low point in WoW history), as that's when the 12 tribes will be searching for at least temporary homes. If publishers time their releases and patches on the discontent in WoW, they can get some nice pickups. CCP can be clever on this (I did like their Cata dig patch note last year), and RIFT plugs on tenderizing WoW's gut, reminding WoW players of that discontent (their ads are golden on it).

 

So Funcom sees a combination of things going on, the build up for WoD (the increases of prices for good on WoW's AH has hit the roof, for example) as players are returning to the nest waiting on WoD. ESO couldn't have come at a worse time, either.

 

Got to time things just right, and not when Blizzard is planning to compensate.

F2P always means failure to garner enough interest to get wide monetary investment.  It's a cash grab from the very small % of people willing to shell out a lot to get ahead and get all the shinies, and when they've had their fill, you are done.  DONE.

 

Not sure how many times I have to post this.  Games are F2P because they aren't good enough to be subscription based.

The simple fact is that developers are not designing microtransaction games to target the ideal audience.  Western consumers have not embraced this model and I doubt they will.   Why would they accept the restricted gameplay, and the no spending limit that comes with this model?  For 10 years prior all they had to play was $15 a month to enjoy the entire game. 

 

This is completely opposite of eastern audiences where software was largely free from piracy.  From this point of view, the microtransaction model satisfies the idea that software is free and has the positive option of supporting a developer.

We also have endless amounts of other entertainment. We can walk away from the whole thing anytime for any reason. The idea of growing with a game is out the door. It's either better than the rest for free or people walk.

Whales can go to kickstarter and become honorary owners, or stay in these kids games and by eye patches.

Maybe they should try coercion. Customers like that.

Yeah I am going to have to go with the games they have just are not enjoyable in the slightest.

Funcoms problem is over stepping their limits, they hardly had AOC squared away before all focus went to TSW. They release good games then do a crappy job of keeping them in competition with the rest of the genre. AOC or TSW could be at the top of their game given the focus needed to maintain that, but they yet again moved on to other projects (lego of all things). AOC is IMO one of the better games on the market at present, yet they do very little to keep it relevant. The same could be said for TSW.

Hah! So they are admitting that their game is not better than the other F2P titles? Because if it was, everyone would play Age of Conan....

The only Funcom game I've experienced was AoC, which I am interested in any Mature and dark themed mmorpg. Even though I played the game post launch, it was evident then the game had released way before it should have and never was able to recover therefore. Even with it's flaws the idea behind of dark, gritty, actually Mature based, nice graphically, and Conan lore based game was a fantastic idea not executed well at all.

Dozens of MMO's, RTS's, FPS's, etc.
