He has left and if he can't discuss the departure and ANet is unwilling to announce it, not much I can do about it. If you had any clue about the business, you'd know this happens all the time.

If he were still with Arenanet, it should be very simple to show some "proof of life". There has not been a single word, interview, forum post, blog post, video since late 2012 containing Eric or even mention of Eric. The game director doesn't just vanish from public view like that. That Colin now has his job proves Eric is no longer Game Director for GW2.

When was Eric Flannum the GW2 game director?

An interview from December 2011.

http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/12/19/massively-talks-mesmer-our-exclusive-interview-with-guild-wars/

It's been days since we got the official Guild Wars Mesmer reveal, but the excitement is still running strong through the fan community.

Here at Massively, we're just as excited about it, so we took some time to sit down with game designer Eric Flannum and chat about some of the background and design details of the eighth and final Guild Wars 2 class. Follow along after the jump to see what he had to say!

Look, Eric Flannum is not described as the Game Director.

GDC 2010

http://www.gdcvault.com/play/1013691/Designing-Guild-Wars-2-Dynamic

"My name is Eric Flannum and I'm the lead game designer.

My name is Colin Johanson and I'm the lead content designer".

The only Game Director GW2 had was and is Colin Johanson.

Still waiting for any "proof of life" you can provide in the form of an communications on the part of Eric RE: GW2 since late in 2012. I know that such sudden and complete disappearances of key people in this and many other creative industries is almost always due to a parting of the ways and NDA/contractual agreements that prevent disclosure and almost always contain a non-compete clause that prevents them from being publicly attached to a competing project.

Usually, when it happens with someone this senior, they end up forming their own studio. That's how Arenanet was formed, with three break-aways from Blizzard. That's how most studios are formed.

I'm not going to argue it any further. It would be wonderful if Eric and other high profile names that have vanished from view were working on a secret expansion, but we are continually told that they are not working on any such thing and  they don't even know yet how they want to approach an expansion. It might even be possible that NCSoft grabbed him for another project that doesn't even officially exist yet, which would explain the way he has vanished completely from view. However, I firmly believe that Eric is not working at Arenanet and I'm also convinced that if he were still in charge, the wrong turn this game has taken with Living Story would never, ever have occurred.

The linkedin link you posted even says he still works at ANet. There is nothing in any NDA or non-compete agreement that says you can't list your current job or that you have left a job. Unless you want to disclose that you have inside information, you're just making a bunch of stuff up. If you have proof, then out with it. You can't expect anyone to take what you say seriously without some sort of backing.

I'll just say that it is not uncommon for someone limited by a non-compete clause to actually start working for a competitor earlier than they should, with the relationship only being officially recognized as having started after the non-compete window has ended. The higher someone's position on leaving, the less likely they are to risk a violation with a public acknowledgement.  There are writers and designers we know have left, not because ANet announced it, but because we know via their social media accounts they are working elsewhere.

Linked in shows him still at Arenanet as Game Director. I believe this is because he is choosing, likely due to his contract with ANet, not to spill the beans in any way, that he has left. We know that Colin is now Game Director, so at the very least Eric's position has changed.

It's not hard to sleuth all this. If he was promoted, there would have been an announcement and no need to go completely silent. He was high profile before launch. He may have made an appearance or two after launch, but he was definitely completely absent from view by the end of 2012.

Also, his absence has been brought up a few times on the official forums, starting in early 2013. I believe there was one response about "not commenting on personnel matters", which would be an odd response if he was still there.

I'd love to be wrong and find out that Eric and others who were high profile before launch, but whom we haven't seen in a long time, are really secretly working on an expansion. However, I actually find the official assertion that they aren't working on an expansion to be very likely, given their overall lack of direction and difficulty putting out lacking Living Story content, which is short on story or content.

All the signs are there that things are just a royal mess at ANet and the loss of key people, along with promotion of long time employees possibly not suited for their new positions, would go a long way in explaining how the studio that launched this incredible game in a little over five years doesn't seem to have accomplished much of anything in the year and a half since launch. Well, not much of anything aside from the deliberate dismantling of many of the principles the game was designed around... (This also hints at a shake up, with new leaders looking to make their mark by undoing the unique accomplishments wrought by the old leaders).

Your CD key will also go a long way. I had the same problem with one of my GW1 accounts, after many years. I gave them personal info and character names the best I could remember them, but they still wouldn't restore the account until I also tracked down the CD key. Sad thing was I was so close with my guess of character names and the really, really old and long gone email address that was associated that that, along with my name and address, should have been enough.

If you got the digital edition, the key would have been in an email. BTW, unless they have changed this, you used to be able to get a password reset sent to your email, so if you still have the address, you may not even have to go through support.

Keep in mind that, regardless of what you think, Gw2 has the most dynamic combat as of now. Not even TERA with its "True Action Combat" is not as dynamic as Gw2. TESO is not even close. TESO's combat is dumbed down version of WoW's combat, with some target assistance. If you daresay something else then you're clueless and you haven't really played Gw2. Being that means Gw2 generates a lot of traffic that other games simply don't, especially in massive fights. And obviously they're working on it.

Also, you know, you can always transfer to a lower tiered server. Some servers really need some power boost and IF WvW population spreads properly, I think it will run just fine. That is why I love Edge of the Mists. My server's performance doesn't matter 1 bit. Besides it will be new experience for ppl like you. But I know you won't dare to transfer from your safe zone, so I'm ending this post right here.

For a conclusion or TL;DR, its as much server issue as it is player issue. Nothing stops you from transferring to a better environment

P.S: Let's not forget that TESO will be using the infamous Hero Engine. Regardless of what you say is going to change my opinion on it. It has ruined one too many MMOs that I loved. In that regard I wouldn't count much on "The Repopulation"

From what I've read Cyrodill is huge compared to the WvW maps and quite empty which will do much to improve performance.

Also it seems there is no collision detection and projectiles seem to be homing?

It's what they call "skilled" and "soft target" system ^^ How dare you claim the projectiles are homing lololol

P.S: Haha did you see on the Cyrodill videos how the guys are clearly stacking into a "zerg blob" right before they break the gate? Yeah ... totally non-zerg action in Cyrodil

I've never understood exactly what is the problem with a big blob of people in games that are trying to create an army vs army situation.

Because that is exactly how it worked until the development of artillery - "lets stack together and hope they run out of bullets and arrows before we run out of bodies".

First you say that Eric Flannum was Guild Wars 2 game director, but he was never presented as so.

Your proof that he was the game director are sites that state that he is working at Arenanet.

Second you mention other high profile people that left Arenanet since release but you fail to name any.

Third you forget to mention the examples of Patrick Wyatt and Jeff Strain, which left NCSoft and went one working on competing products, especially Jeff Strain that went from NCSoft to En Masse and work on TERA. TERA that actually saw problems between NCSoft and Bluehole due to the founders of Bluehole being people previous employed by NCSoft.

Fourth I have not seen that quote in the forums.

Fifth, if the people that you say are actually good are working in the expansion and not in the Living Story that would easily explain what you believe is lower story quality since those people aren't working on it.

Sixth lets play find Eric Flannum.

Back to the OP's question.

Yes I do like what they did with LA.

Seeing LA burning from Gendarran Fields was a nice view. Seeing the havoc when I entered LA was even cooler.

I love the different events and can't wait for the 4th of March.

i havent tried the last update but i have enjoyed all the living stories ive tried. With that said, Scarlet Briar already feels like Lightning from FF13. They want to keep bringing back a character i dont care about.

No...not really....

No...not really....

There was the variation of laying siege for a few years until they ran out of food.

And you not going to get phalanx clashes without proper collision detection and good luck convincing people to train to stay in formation. They have hard time to stay together around a commander as it is.

Anyway you had big armies clashes, not "a organized group of 10 vs an organized group of 10".

Not that it's impossible in gw2

You can just follow the zerg if you want but you get more from it being organized. If failing that atleast get in a group all you have to do is ask and even randoms let you in. Say in group or even map the waypoint the group wants to go to and it's easy. Co-ordinating multiple groups may be difficult unless you are in a guild.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

For those that couldn't find Eric Flannum and still insist he doesn't work for Arenanet anymore, you can see where he is (this picture is from August 2013, higher resolution pics at http://www.flickr.com/photos/arenanet/9615993971/sizes/l/).

And a pic from his gw2 wiki article (interestingly also with a cap and glasses) to easily compare.

I had fun the first few times, but I wont be sad when the event ends tuesday.

Adding stuff like this at times add a bit of variety to the game. I would however like them to open up some new permanent zones as well.

R you kidding me ....the loot alone should have you doing it as much as possible.....if you went at it hard you cold do 20-30 gold a day.....

and the draognite dropping is incredible compared to the other events where you are lucky to get one or two....

im 60 dragonite from my 1st ascended gear piece...

and then they have the event to take the city back....oh ya....

and i was a WvW junky and ive done the pve up to where im now on orr....

the WvW trained me well for this....i see people linger near enemies and i run right at em ....right into 10 - 15

have no fear....it works!

ALSO i wandered about got my 250 heirlooms....ive been part of ones where we get 1200 citizens

and i'll add 3-5 man teams doing citizens can be fun too , try exploring with a mini team its fun.....

i also find myself turnign up graphics to really have a look about too ( too laggy to fight but wow what a site...)

i was part of the 1st public try at this and 90% of us had no idea aobut the loot bags ony aobut saving citizens and so that zerg split into 4 and went on like that with 4 commanders and we did over 1200

i also had with 4 people and epic 12 minute fight on a doc agaisnt nearly 15 of them that kept respawning ....eventually we won and got away....but the loot got me exotic gear and more....
