I hated hipsters before hating hipsters was cool.

Well it's either because you've already dropped money on the game, and so cognitive dissonance has kicked in making you feel like you're having fun to justify the cost. OR. You disagree with the reviewers.

But I know what you mean. It may also be that reviewers are being more critical in light of reactions to them making failed predictions.

I know I will.  I only get a couple hrs at most during a day to play a game and I'm in no hurry to hit lvl cap so I'm sure it will take much longer than that.

I'm not an IT Specialist, Game Developer, or Clairvoyant in real life, but like others on here, I play one on the internet.

Age of Conan, Warhammer and Guild Wars 2 being the most notable. Anyone who was an MMO veteran when these games were releasing probably remembers thinking these games would be the next WoW, or the next Jesus Christ, etc. That's what the review companies were spouting.

And then you actually got to play the games... and yeah, we know the history.

My point is, why is it all of a sudden a game like ESO, which I thoroughly enjoy and think is so much better than anything that has released in years, is getting such terrible reviews, while games which almost no one enjoyed - received such AWESOME reviews?

What's going on? Did Zenimax not pay someone? Is this an organized plot by a competitor? I hate to be the conspiracy theory guy, but I don't understand. Or, is this just some sort of meme which has spread across the internet like wildfire, or doge? "ESO sucks, not worth $15, armor painted on, blah blah blah" (Anyone else notice the reviews all use the exact same terminology? I had never heard anyone say "armor painted on" before ESO, yet I've heard it in EVERY-SINGLE-REVIEW!)

I'm a skeptic, and I think some BS is going on..

Of course smear campaigns exist and it could be true in this case, at least partially.

But there is another game called  "WILDSTAR".  Why dont you hear almost anything about this game, if you look into the forum on this page the discussions are almost dead in comparison to the ESO forums.

In general I dont hear a lot about Wildstar, similar "reviews" targeted on their payment model.

Am I wrong here or did you read and hear similar reviews about Wildstar and critics about their monthly subscription model ?

Conspiracy and smear campaigns - American tv has a lot to answer for. the simple truth is that the truth comes out during beta's - at beta the core of the game is baked in, it's not going to change much. (videos of the game tell you all you need to know if you want to evaluate a game). this has happened with every mmorg in the last 5 years and the general opinions formed during beta have allways proved valid - why wouldn't they, it's just a game after all.

rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW (10000 hrs on main mage)> oblivion > LOTR (600 runemaster/Hunter) > Rift (230 hours mage) > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar

Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR

There is definitely a coordinate smear campaign that includes all mass media and all YouTube personalities. It spans thousands of people and countries.
Thanks Obama!

I did not read all 17 pages, I perused a few though, and saw a lot of the same themes coming up. I realize that some people choose to put on a tin foil hat, and go forward, and come up with all sorts of reasons to make themselves feel good about it, the OP is missing the heart of the issue.

We're Jaded.

Years ago plenty of games got great press, fans did not know better, media did not know better, but in the past 17 odd years we've seen good releases, bad releases, we've seen dev's fail to deliver on "promises", and we've seen them make it happen. We've had good releases, and bad, and more and more people have become familiar with the genre, so somewhere along the line, people have developed a sense of "been here, done that" attitude, and come it with a sense of entitlement that "XYZ features have to be in the game or it sucks." You've got what pass for reviews.

This isn't politics, I doubt there is a coordinated smear campaign, but you've got a big title, with an impressive history that has built up a following of it's own, to expect people to come in 100% open minded these days is almost a ludicrous idea.

Personally, I think the whole thing is a lesson in "form your own opinion, and realize your opinion is not universal."

It was a whole weekend, you know.  I'll have plenty to say about when the NDA lifts.

A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.

Yeha, what makes me skeptic about all these so called "reviews" is all the bad reviewing... there's like nothing good... while I, who played the betas love the game so much. How can we see things so different? Been playing MMOs for years..

It could be like you're saying, some kind of conspiracy.. or maybe people is comparing it to other games like WOW and they see things that are different and rage about it.. I dont get it.. ESO is not WOW, or any other game for that matter.. its ESO, nothing else.

I mean when a new Audi car gets released you dont see reviews of that new car that goes like "Oh its a damn Volkswagen ripoff!!"

Play the game for what it is..  don't compare it with other games thats been on the market for 10  years.. Review it for what it is and be fine with it or stay out of it.

I truly do think there is BS going on....it's called the bandwagon effect. I have participated in every stress test and found that the game, to me and many others, fun and actually a decent MMO. Now this is from what I've seen. ESO  has a very large starting area, it's not just throwing players in there and just saying have at it, you slowly build up to the main gameplay, some people are playing like 5 hours of the game and saying fuck this because they aren't wanting to put in the effort to get past the first patch of gameplay, which is rough I can say and can be entertaining on how you look at what you're doing. People are also going into this not wanting to beta test but play a released product and they are bashing an unfinished game. Another thing I'd like to point out is that a lot of the bad reviews I've read all say the same damn thing, they are either on one extremely vague topic or another but no one is giving a legit reason as to why the game is bad that is a decent FACT. Just because you don't like the game doesn't mean other people feel the same way, if you don't like ESO based on a beta and don't want to play it then fucking DON'T. But we all know how FFXIV:ARR went people bashed the hell out of that game and when it came out everyone just LOVED it so much! I will definitely be an avid player of ESO if I enjoy the released product and could care less what reviewers think because I never trust anyone else to pick out what I enjoy to play.

They're telling THEIR fans what they want to hear.

ESO has been a lightning rod for bashing since it was announced. It seems everyone who has ever been near an Elder Scrolls game knows, for a fact, how the MMO version should be done - that is, those who agree an MMO version should be done at all... many don't and just wanted co-op Skyrim.

It's gone on from there. Wildstar , FF and ESO all announced the sub model months ago. Guess which one got the most whines about the sub?

And they haven't stopped: just about all the negative previews mention the sub vs. f2p thing. Many saying they would play if it was f2p but not sub... which seems weird to me: If I think something is a turd, I won't go near it, F2P or not. Apparently we now live in the age of relative turdiness.

It's just cool to dump on ESO...all the cool kids are doing it

"Keep dancing baby, it's the end of the world."

2/11/14 3:16:11 PM#172

I got to jump in this past weekend and really enjoyed the game.  I had zero desire to even play it, but someone told me about the beta key giveaway, etc, etc.  After playing up to L7 I immediately unsubbed from FFXIV and pre-ordered the Imperial CE Edition.

There is something that just feels different about this game.  I get more of a sense of adventure out of it and it reminded me of how I felt in the Golden Days of MMOs (pre-WoW).  I can see myself spending a LOT of time in TESO, at least until Camelot Unchained (working title) comes out late 2015.

That said, it's obvious this game will not appeal to, well, you know, the wow-kiddie (ADD-riddled min/maxers who cant discern a good story from a slot machine if their lives depended on it).  Nor will it appeal to the poor, which coincidently happens to intersect with a lot of wow-kiddies.

That's just, like, my opinion, man.

First we have the game design released by the developers.

People didn't like their design and spoke up.

Others said "how can you not like the design before you play it"?

Then People start playing it in Beta.

Bad reviews come out despite the NDA.

Others said that "when the NDA is dropped the good reviews will come".

Then the NDA is dropped for the press for the first 15 levels.

The press say is isn't a great game.

Others say "they are only reviewing the first 15 levels, the rest of the game is great".

Anyone see a pattern here? Anyone want to guess what will happen when levels 16 and up are free of an NDA completely?

...or here's another wild idea, maybe the press got so much shit after giving overly positive reviews to swtor and other crapgames, that they now try to earn back their readers trust by being overly critical.

Nah, lets go with the tinfoil conspiracy theory. Throw in some aliens and black magic too, for good measure.

But that would mean the gaming press is full of it and their reviews are worthless. And that just isn't the case, right?
