So, I've known you most of your life.
I know exactly what your asking.
Let me answer this for you.

The only real reason I can see for a question like this, well, you don't really care what the game is. You just want to pick the "in" game.
You just want to pick the socially correct game...

Knowbody can answer this question for you. You have to do it yourself. I can tell you some of the differences between the games.
Which you could have found, yourself, by taking 10 minutes and skimming through the threads, here.. but I can't tell you which you should play.

WoW : World of WarCraft. It's got some nice graphics, it's got some nice content, it has some really nice combat features. In fact they just put in the PvP honor system.
It has a ton of quests. Your choice of many races with different classes. And tons and tons of Blizzard humor.

EQ : Everquest. It's got some nice graphics, it's got some really decent content (it's 5 years old, it has tons of content), the combat is getting better,
It has a ton of quests, many of which have never been discovered. Lots of races and lots of classes. SOE is slowly changing the game from the hard challenge it use to be, to a ... steady ladder of player progression.

Which is better? Only you can answer that.
Whats the difference? Well, WoW is still designed for the casual player. The player that doesn't have the time or drive to comment umpteen hours into solving a quest or killing a mob.
EQ is a game where you still need to commit a serious amount of online game time, if you want to excel, achieve and advance.

I think its a good question, and he didn't say anything about which is the most "in" game.

However it is something that probaby must be answerd by the person cuz different people will like one or the other or something else.

I've never played wow, i play eq and have thought about quiting because I want to excell and yet don't have the time to excel in eq.  It is a fun game however .. difficult but fun, at least up to level 65 after that im not sure its fun.

Right now at that link you can download everquest, or at least the original everquest without all the expansions and can play it for free for 7 days.  I'm not sure if they require a credit card number, if they do I'd be leary cuz you'd have to cancel and if they slip up an charge you anyways might be hard to get the money back.   But, it might be worth looking at.  I can't imagine how long it would take to download tho hours maybe.

try and find a friend that has one or the other games I'd think who will let you see the graphics and game play, that might help you make up your mind.

The enemy is so dumb! They believe that WE are the enemy! - A famous orc commander.

WoW is an overgrown EQ tutorial.

By all mean, I would recommend a new player to start with WoW, and if in 2- months you are 60 and bored with the game, then try EQ!  If in 3+ months you are happy and think WoW is the roxxor, dont try EQ afterward!

PS: After playing EQ for years, I didnt bear WoW 1 full day before I cancel account.  I am not currently playing EQ and think CoH is the best game to have grace the MMORPGs at large.

HAHAHAHA.... Thats funny

Anyways... I suggest trying WoW first. If you dont like it then, like mentioned above, try EQ. EQ though does not seem to be as newbie friendly as it used to be. But i play on the Bristlebane server and new people dont go there often. WoW would be more newbie friendly and from what i hear is pretty fun.

I have played two characters on WOW both to the top level 70 and two characters in EQ to level 50s. My eq exp is a bit dated since I stopped two years ago,but here is what I found:

1. EQ has MUCH more content, quests, zones, mobs, AA skills, and things to do than WOW primarily because it is a much older game.

2. EQ  WAS much more hardcore than WOW. If you die, you lose exp, which must be regained by killing mobs or doing quests. In wow you don't lose EXP.

3. EQ is very player dependent. Thus, if you want to reduce exp loss, you need a rez from a priest. Certain classes slow down the attack of the mobs. Each class has their own function in groups. This isn't as true in WOW.

4. WOW is MUC H more player friendly and more for the casual player. It has much faster leveling and quests are much shorter than that found in EQ.

5. Graphics are a bit better in WOW over EQ  because WOW is a new game with more updated graphics.

6. EQ has a number of greater time sinks in the game over wow. There is substantially more running from zone to zone in EQ and death has a harsher penalty than that found in WOW.

However, with all of this said, you really ineed to evaluate the feel and contect of each game. They each have their pros and cons

Never really played EQ but I've played WoW for 2 years:

Pos.

1. Good graphics, UI's and mods for people who like much more detailed playing (me ).

2. A good and organized trading systems/merchants, mail, auction houses ect.

3. Interactive in the game and out- (forums, events, rewards, fan sites, updates ect.)

4. A descent combat/fighting system, party interfaces, guilds, raids, socializing, looting rules, economy/money.

5. A simple and understanding PvP system, pvp battlegrounds and pvp areas.

6. GM's that assist and help. exm: retrieving characters or items (more details on that) bad exm: jimmy the world of warcraft story- 'is there a quest to do my mom?' ticket.

7. A variety of monsters and pets. Same with classes and races.

8. Mind-exploding instances with good drops/loots and quests.

9. Good and REALLY good armor, weapon, item base system. (duration, rarity, $elling, level equip, look ect)

10. Exploits-adventuring to rare places like gm island, the smiley face under kara(instance) train ride- glitching into the bottom of the sea, mount hyjal and the world wide tree, old hillsbrad (now and instance), cavenrs of time (instance), back door to onyxia's lair (gigantic dragon ) ad much, much more.

Negatives

1. LAG, depends on computer or system.

2. Spamming (not much of a problem unless they do it for about 5 hrs) This goes with the common, "CAN I HAVE SUM GOLD PLZ?!?!", or "WILL U HELP MEH LVL????".

 3. Some updates can seem unfair to people who had played WoW for a long time like nerfing wall climbing, spells, BC  ect.

4. A common subject in conversation- unfair classes and whining.

5. addiction (like with any other game)

And now I can't think of anymore but I'm sure people can. Well I hope you have a better understanding what WoW is like, oh and visit the website check out the the items, graphics, events, rewards, and forums. =D
