What makes you love The Secret World? I followed this game when all of the trailers first came out and loathed over the fact that it had such a mysterious and challenging vibe to it. But when the game was released and I logged in for the first time I literally sat there and said what the f*** is this?

I think the game play mechanics are horrid and the combat is disgustingly vague and repetitive.

Keep in mind I haven't logged into the game for sometime so I'm not sure if the mechanics of The Secret World have changed at all. Have any of the updates helped at all?

Why not just hop on Guild Wars 2 and go zerg around in WvW.

My point being, I'm looking to get back into some old MMORPG's that I used to love. So, why do you love The Secret World and what makes it worth your wild and time?

:P

So you hated the mystery and challenge, as well as the mechanics and combat.

Dare I say that you might not want to play TSW?

I didn't hate the mystery or the challenge. I didn't even delve into the game that much, the whole combat was off setting and the story line just seemed to continue on for forever.

Hence why I ask you love TSW to see your opinion on the game as of NOW then before.

You seem to of already made up your mind.

But I agree. The combat mechanics are clumsy. But then again I can count on one hand how manymmo's get their combat right.

What sets the secret world apart is the setting and dialogue and good storyline as well as the ambience of the world. Everything else is 'just okay'.

This article pretty well sums up all the reasons I like this game:

The combat isn't that great.  Team up with others if you like that sort of thing to get through it.  A lot of people do enjoy tweaking builds, there is plenty of room for that.  I'm a fan of the story.  The NPC dialogue is far superior to any other MMO I've played.  Most of it is hilarious.

I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

Don't stress yourself on it... Actually I use it as a marker lately, if there's a game I haven't played yet and I see folks bit**ing and moaning about character models or combat animations, I put it on the list for later checking, because it's probably a good game :)

As someone said, whining about character models or animation is just as stupid if someone would ditch a game of chess just because the pieces are from plastic and not from finely carved oak :)

a) like any other MMO in the frist levels (here in the first X time since there is no level) you have 1? 2? max 3 ability

deal with it is not repetitive is just that you are playing from 2 hour wtf do you expect

b) once you play for 2/3 month some people think is repetitive because they feel forced to push the builder 5 time before to use a consumer

but this is part of the stupidity of new generation that have no fantasy nore understanding of any type of complexity

you can either build buil cons(at2) buil buil consume (at5) or many other variant

or even more intresting there are skill that doesnt need builder or consumer u can actually make a built without consumer

people is jsut too stupid when i read combat is boring i know that person don't deserve TSW

TSW is a complex game to an extend you dont need to have a PHD to play but you have to be slightly (just a tiny little bit) better then the normal player

we are talking just 2 step above monkey level... money>normal player>dolphins>TSW player...

the number of people that say is boring and don't get how it work really cast a deep shadow on human race

I love the missions, the lore, and the setting.  They totally nailed that stuff like nobody's business.  I played the story from beginning to end, and wish I could unlock it and run it again.  It offers so much on this level that no other MMO does.

But the combat... suh-huh-huh-huh-hucksss!  Just tedious, excruciating crap.  I played the game in spite of the combat system, and am not currently playing solely because of the combat.

I love it for the story and the setting, for the character customization (build-wise) and of course the challenges.

It doesn't sound like it'll be a game for you though, OP, considering how full of venom that first post was.

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

Here's a quote from another forum on the combat:

I had a trial about 5 months ago but I didn't care much for the combat system. But since I'm not currently playing anything right now, I decided to try it again. After looking up some info on the combat system I realized I was making mistakes, and now I'm having much more fun.

The massive amount of skills you can learn and the customization of builds makes it easy to have a terribad build, but if you follow a guide or use your brain, then you'll have a great time in combat.

Which one of these opinions is right?  I think both.  The freedom TSW gives you to create a sucky build (and keep the same sucky build) is the same freedom to build something cool.  But the learning curve is steep, and if you never take the time to learn, you'll walk away unhappy with combat.

First, let me say that I have been back from time to time and played some of the new issues.  Which story wise are just friggin' awesome.  I'm plenty familiar with the game even now, but the combat keeps me from being a player that logs in even once a month.

Second, let me say I appreciate your reply.  You seem to have good intentions and I don't think you intend your message to be "LTP, noob"!!!

To elaborate, I stuck around in the game long enough to run every quest in the game, as well as rerunning several multiple times because I liked the story.

I know the system.  I know that when it comes to a good build, the word "strike" is highlighted for a reason, and "states" are important, including criticals and roll based states.  And I know  how to set up a synergy between passive and active abilities in order to get the most out of them all.  They may not be the decks of the month, but I suspect they're pretty solid.  And I know how to avoid taking damage; my twitch skills are pretty good.  Maybe not the greatest, but I can tap-dance around a few charging Ak'ab just fine.

I'm pretty confident that I've been through what your poster has been through.

With TSW, it's easy to get wrong, but not that hard to get right.  It's not significantly complex in comparison to other MMO's, it's just that it gives you more freedom to make bad choices.

The difficulty level is not the/a problem.  Taking down a champion mob or a boss isn't difficult, it's just time consuming.  The best chance I have at losing is when I happen to be fighting them when suddenly a new spawn pops up right where I'm standing; sometimes even another champion, which again points to bad design.  And this happens much more often than other games because combat is slow and tedious.

Lastly, IMO, the map/combat elements don't fit the genre, nor the story Ragnar was trying to tell.  Having maps in which you can't go 30 metres without running into a supernatural creature and still calling it "the secret world" just doesn't work.  They tried to build a contemporary, action-based MMO on top of a typical non-action based(stand in one spot, press buttons) MMO map.  From a mob standpoint, imagine doing all the things you have to do to survive combat in this game in a WoW mob environment.  Nevermind... that's pretty much what we have.

you blame the combat i blame the pve... to me pve is boring i do it once i may do it twice perhaps then is hella boring and i don't blame the combat is not the combat making it boring is the fact that pve dont change tactic is a scirpt code and is boring after 2 time

thats why i am still playing tsw because i like pvp if it was only a pve game i would have gone long time ago but i dont blame the combat i think u are pointing finger on the wrong sobject combat is fine is pve that no matter what is boring after u have done it couple of times

WAAAGH!

2/22/14 9:25:06 PM#16

TSW is a game I want to like... but just can't. The story and atmosphere are fantastic, and I can definitely appreciate what Ragnar is trying to accomplish with it. That being said though...

Combat is incredibly frustrating at times, mainly because the very mobile nature of it frequently causes adds to be pulled (density is way too high), and the fact that the Dreamworld engine has never liked my PC very much doesn't help. I can live with lackluster animations, but even beyond that combat is just... unwieldy. I've tried melee, magic, and ranged builds, and while I definitely like magic the best, it's still just not that much fun to kill things. Which, again, wouldn't be so bad... but they've got the game set up like a typical MMORPG with various creatures roaming around almost everywhere. Combat is an almost constant thing, and when its as lackluster as TSW's, that's a major problem.

It's not a bad game by any means, and I still play from time to time. It's good for a couple hours here and there, but more than that and I just end up getting frustrated. I'd love to see Transylvania, Egypt, etc., but I just can't force myself past the second area. Which is a shame.

Oh, and crafting is... well it's just pointless and poorly done, IMO. Maybe it gets better later.

Edit: I have to give credit for the creature designs though. Every time I see a new one, without fail I can't help but think 'What the FUCK IS THAT?!?'. Very good monster design.

MMORPG's are thriving. There are hundreds available today, with different settings, mechanics, and even payment models to suit anyone's gaming needs. If you can't find one to call your own, then the problem isn't the genre... it's YOU.

Thanks for expanding on the point.  Many simply trash combat without really explaining why.

Mobs do tend to be tougher/longer to take down in TSW than in other games, but I have found that adapting your build to their weakness really reduces the time to take them down; my sense is that many keep the same build throughout, and while it may get the job done, it's probably not completely optimal either.  There are builds that work pretty well throughout the game, but to really knock things down quickly, it means using the flexibility of the system to switch it up in different areas.

I can't call my current build "slow and tedious" because it works really well, but I spent some time on it and did some research; I understand that's not everyone's cup of tea.  And I also understand folks may not have the patience to do that research -- I'm not a min/maxer myself, but I know when I should be doing better than I am.

As to mob density and the number of creatures, remember that the areas we're visiting as characters have been cordoned off with yellow tape by the Men in Black.  We're seeing a LOT more than your average person, and your average person isn't even allowed to cross into the area.  These are hot spots of paranormal activity that we're being sent in to investigate and get under control.

Okay, but you specifically said: "I followed this game when all of the trailers first came out and loathed over the fact that it had such a mysterious and challenging vibe to it."

Loathe - to dislike greatly greatly and often with disgust and intolerance.

So pardon my confusion when you state that you loathe two primary aspects of a game and then get the response of "maybe it's not for you." Which, if you hate those two things, TSW is not for you.

Or maybed you loved the mysterious and challenging vibe? I dunno, but you used a pretty strong word to describe your feelings towards the game's primary attributes.

There are 5 things that people frequently miss about combat:

  1. You need to equip 2 weapons.  The training missions needs to be revamped (it makes it seem like you only need one weapon), but having one weapon will seriously gimp you.
  2. Understand that your actives and passives must work together.  Your passives must exploit the conditions your actives are triggering.  If you are triggering Weakened, look for passives to exploit Weakened.  Multiple passives can be triggered!
  3. Understand that your passives can be from ANY weapon, not just your equipped ones.  You can find conditions to exploit by using the search panel to the right of the wheel.
  4. Don't forget to upgrade your skill in your weapons and talismans so you can equip better QL items as they drop.
  5. Don't forget to add glyphs and signets to your gear; they make a big difference

Oh, and crafting is... well it's just pointless and poorly done, IMO. Maybe it gets better later.

Crafting is really more of a utility skill in TSW, good for cooking up potions or glyphs, maybe the occasional weapon.  It is useful, but it's not a complete profession as in other MMOs.

I keep wanting to play this game again and then remember why I left in the first place--the combat.  The quests/lore/story are superb,  maybe best or near the best of any MMO. It is the snoozefest combat that ultimately caused me to quit the game.  When I hear how awesome the new stuff is and considering I just made it out of the beginning area , the New England area or whatever it is called, makes me want to try it again.   I do hope this game continues to thrive because there is a lot going for it.
