So if your tight with Disney already, then you got the inside track to go ahead and start SWG2.

I left there almost a year ago now. :)

They'll take you back. Just pitch them your ideas for SWG2.

Yeah Ralph, This is the time with Repop and Smed's kidding himself that everybody has forgotten all his company did wrong after your departure with a mention of a SWG like IP. It is time to have the real deal done by the Mouse with you.  The players would only agree.

If SOE did somehow revive SWG, or brought out a game that had SWG's features, then SOE would probably be forgiven for a lot of things, of course i'd believe it when i saw it, and i wouldn't take their word on anything presently, but i do hope they are not just winding us all up. As for the Repop, their not quite in the same position as SOE, but their definitely fighting a similarly uphill battle, so far there is a lack of credibility all round, at least until either is able to put forward something more 'concrete'

"If" is the key word. As I ready stated , I truly do not believe that Disney would ever gamble with outsourcing  an IP that they are fully capable of doing themselves. They need to protect their investment and their reputation and backpedaling  to the former IP holder who has way less then stellar results would not provide that protection. Besides,They would never allow the freedom that Lucas Arts did with SWG if they did and I am sure that would be very frustrating for SOE to be the Mouse's bitch.

This ^^^ I will believe it when I see it, can't trust a word out of smeaghead's mouth.. I have been burned once to many times by SOE, doubt they could ever make anything to bring me back.. /shrug

I just can't get behind anything SOE is releasing these days, due to the cartoon graphics direction they are taking.  One of the things I hated about SWtOR was the art style.

think we must have read different things, or at least, interpreted them differently, was under the impression that Disney were more interested in letting other people develop using the IP than themselves, outside of films and consumer goods at least. now that Disney have control of the IP, with the possibility that developers would have more leaway with it than before, maybe we will see forward movement, or even some sort of reincarnation of SWG, although im really not a big fan of the mouse.. but, having said that, i don't see SOE reviving SWG, no matter how much i personally would like to see that happen.

and yes, IF is a key word, and there's far too many of them these days.

OMG, I want jump to light speed so BAD.  The space travel and combat was like no other game EVER.  I bought it mostly for that.  And all the collecting and crafting on land. XD Had so many guild homes, droids and such, XD. Costed me millions to upkeep...

I thought EA had all the rights to any other future SW games?

I'll spill the beans.  I used to work as a reporter for a gaming news site and it all I covered was SWG.  SOE had a license to use the Lucas Arts material but Lucas called the shots on what they cold use, when they could use it and how they could use it.  When the time came to make the major changes to SWG it was Lucas Arts that pulled the trigger and not SOE.  SOE did the dirty deeds that ruined the games for most players but they did it under the Lucas orders  if they did not do it they would lose the license and the game would have been shut down anyway.

Since Lucas is not really anymore and Disney now owns the SW franchise all my gag orders are now dead.

SWG was a great game, great concept, combat was pretty decent, crafting was the best in a mmo I ever encountered, but here's the thing, they went wrong when they gave in to the kiddies and made everyone have that force sensitivity crap. The force trials or whatever they were called ruined the game for me. Remember in the next game, not everyone is supposed to have the force so make the rest of the classes just as fun to play.

Raph,

Smedley would almost be "brain-dead" if he didn't involve you in the revamp of "sandbox" games.  Just the PR alone of an announcement of Raph Koster rejoining SOE would all but close the arguments of "Smed will mess it up anyway".

Good to see you out and about again!.

Here's hoping that Smed will get it right and this new sandbox game will have Raph Koster's name all over it.  You (and Smedley) would certainly get my support and more importantly, dollars.

Why is it said that the road to hell is paved with good intentions? Is there a shortage of bad ones?

2/03/14 11:41:58 AM#152

So new IP huh? could it be that someone has actually learned from Chris Roberts that the current game development cycle is screwed and they should just create something fresh and new with serious innovation?

Nah that wouldnt happen... this is SOE were talking about....

Played: UO, LotR, WoW, SWG, DDO, AoC, EVE, Warhammer, TF2, EQ2, SWTOR, TSW, CSS, KF, L4D, AoW, WoT

Playing: WoT and anything else to break the boredom until something better comes out.

Tired of: Linear Quest games, Dailies, and Dumbed down games

Anticipating:Star Citizen,Citadel of Sorcery

Well, I am a super big fan of the mouse although I could never approve of Walt's prejudices. Without the mouse we could  not even considering this possibility. They are Marvel-ous.

SWG offered us that and as a result (despite rampant bugs and terribad customer support) it retained 250k players. I'm not sure that kind of loyalty can exist for a game that isn't within that universe. It's exactly why SWTOR clings to life, because; Star Wars.

Bingo. But I'm willing to bet that no one is listening to us about this.

I played SWG for a couple of years, mainly pre-CU and pre-NGE.  There were several things that made this game unique among MMO's.  And none of this was related to it being a Star Wars IP.  I'll try not to wear any rose-colored glasses, because there were some flaws as well.

The skill system was one of the most complex and interconnected systems I've seen in a game.  There was a huge variety of play styles supported, and none of it was defined by a class you picked when you made your character.  You could become anything you wanted, and change it at any time.  A lot of people maligned the apprenticeship system, where you had to get apprenticeship xp by training other players, but it forced player interaction.  There were actual non-combat skills and play styles that were valid, and fostered player interaction and role playing.  Not everyone wants to spend all of their game time in combat, and it brought a different type of gamer into the game.

You could explore anywhere on a world you wanted, and travel to any world at any time.  There were no level restrictions.  If you were careful, you could go to dangerous worlds with no combat skills and survive (mainly to gather resources, you'd die if you tried to fight anything).  You could group with anyone regardless of skill level, and could form huge groups, with each contributing something.

The crafting system was deep and complex, with a constantly changing resource gathering system.  Each of the crafting professions was dependent on other professions that again forced player interaction.  Having the best items be player-made, and the constant decay of used items, fostered a continual need for the crafting professions.  The player vending system was again unique.  How often have you seen certain crafters corner the market in a game because they were able to make the best items from prime resources they had gathered and saved over the course of a year?

Player housing (and later, player cities) was more varied and accessible than that I've seen in any other game.  The variety of player decorated homes astounded me.  You could spend tons of time just traveling around touring what people had created.

As I said, there were some flaws.  Once the world was populated, the non-master levels of the crafting professions became less useful.  Most people had to grind straight up to Master at a loss of money before they could make useful items to sell and make money.

The single character per account was very limiting, and necessitated in SWG because of the jedi system they built in.  In a non-Star Wars game, you could axe the jedi system, and allow another 1 or 2 character slots and solve a lot of the gripes.  That way you could have a non-combat character as well as a combat character.  The whole holocron system they implemented ruined immersion because everyone started grinding through professions just to get a jedi slot unlocked, and forced people to play something they didn't enjoy.

The combat system with the buffered action bar was a little mind-numbing.  It didn't require a lot of thought other than spamming the same couple of actions in the same order over and over.  There were also a lot of bugs in the game, and slow load times for packed areas of the world.  And I'm sure there were other flaws I'm forgetting after all this time.

For all its flaws, I really wish someone would take the ideas of this game (and its spiritual predecessor, Ultima Online) and make a new game with today's technology and updates.

It's a trap....do not fall for it. Star Wars now by Disney will not allow for repeated mistakes.
