I hope Brad's new project is successful. Both EQ and Vanguard are among my favorite games.

 

I also hope he finds a decent producer to manage production.

Brad doesn't always get a fair shake. Obviously he's made some mistakes, but who hasn't? Live and learn.

He's a good game designer though, and I wish him luck with his new game.

This new title is too typical and cheesy. Rise of the Fallen? I will probably forget the name by the end of this day.

It should've just been a 1-word title: Pantheon.

VG was a sweet MMO that was unfortunately not fleshed out at launch. The world and game mechanics though were very nice. I looking forward to seeing what he can do here.

It was a big shock at the time. But than every other new AAA MMO failed too. And Vanguard proved to be the LAST real MMO attempted. In fact if his company was not closed and Vanguard sold to SOE , who kept it on ice so its not competing with EQ. Vanguard would probably be best MMO around.

Are you serious? Where you even around during launch?

If SOE didn´t step in and throw in an extra 25 million in funding, the game wouldn´t have even been launched!

As Microsoft saw Braid was just burning Money and pulled out half way during Development!

If SOE didn´t step in 5 months after launch and bought up his studio + game, Vanguard would have been shut Down 5 months after release!

And in SOE´s defense. The first year and half they put quite a decent size dev team With experienced devs on the game and managed to fix most of the serious issues, like continious rubber banding issues and constant hanging when you crossed chunks! They also added quite a bit of content to make the game more Complete. They continue to do so.

But no one came back and the server pops continued to decline, so at a given point SOE stopped throwing Money at it and removed most of the devs and put it on life support. The devs increased. You are sounding like reading an old newspaper.

That is just the blunt releality of current day economics! You get one shot With Your games today! At launch and when you fail, you´re done for! You cannot expect SOE to just keep throwing Money at a game that didn´t attract any players but the hardcore few.

Their last attempt was to create a New centralised experience With the Isle of Dawn to bring New players together in one big starter zone and even that didn´t help. The IoD is a more concise newbie experience. You can still start on the mainland without everything in a smaller, easier to find area. That is all IoD is for. Once on the mainland it is still the same.

At one point, enough is enough.

SOE simply doesn´t have the funds like Square Enix has to completely redevelop the entire game and release Vanguard 2.0.

It´s too risky, especially in todays economic climate.

For SE it turned out a success With FFXIV:ARR, but it could have easily tanked and caused a severe Financial blow to SE.

 

 

The Dev team didn´t increase. The size of the dev team right after SOE took over will never be assigned to Vanguard anymore.

After Isle of Dawn update tanked too and didn´t bring in the New wave of subs it hoped for, the dev team was downsized to a mere 1 to 2 devs lol.

There was even a period of about a year or so (up to the F2P addition) there wasn´t a single dev on the game anymore.

Yes, when they finally did the F2P Conversion last year they again added a few interns to Vanguard to do some stuff.

When you have ZERO People assgined to a game, the team can´t get any smaller but only bigger lol. /shrug

But that´s it.

Agreed...Let's hope he's learned his lesson from the Vanguard mess...Because the vision behind that game had serious potential...Incredible potential I think...Only to see that potential completely squandered my McQuaid's inability as a producer and manager...

So before this thread gets too big. Figured I'd post a QnA I had with Brad over at rerolled.. 

 

Brad- will you be talking about your past in regard to VG and what you've learned in the KS? That seems to be a point of contention for a lot of folks.

 

"If I need to, yes. I really don't want to dwell on the past -- it's time to be forward thinking and to get excited about the future. That said, you guys need to know that we've learned from our mistakes so some discussion may be appropriate. If we aren't honest and we don't learn from the past, then the past was simply a failure and a defeat. I refuse to look at it that way and we won't be defeated by the mistakes of the past, because we are going to learn from them and do a better job this time. I've learned so much, especially about myself, because of both my successes and my failures. 

For me it all came in a frustrating sequence. 9 times out of 10 a person fails, fails, fails, and then succeeds (if he ever succeeds at all). For me it was 1. huge success (half a billion dollars of profit for Sony, etc.), 2. Commercial failure (I say commercial because I still think VG was awesome in many ways and I’m still proud of it)

Anyway, the success first and failure second really jacked with my mind. I became extremely arrogant, thinking whatever I touched would turn into gold. And then when things didn't work out so well on my second try it was really quite a blow to me because I had deluded myself big time. I ended up in a bad place and I never want to be back there again, ever. 

But also in learning more about myself over the years, I know this is what I want to do for the rest of my life: make MMOs that I and other gamers want to play. It's just who I am and it's the only thing that professionally makes me happy. 

I just don't want to get bogged down in the past too much. If it makes sense to discuss something about the past, then I'll participate. But to be totally upfront and honest, I'm here primarily to promote my new game. It's a blast talking with you all, and I'm here for that as well, but let's spend most of the time here together facing forward. We will need your feedback and opinions in order to insure we make the game you guys want and that I want. It's about community building and being accessible. 

Anyways, I hope that makes sense.

And it does, you would think that Brad had killed some of these moaners loved ones or left them destitute with no money lol.

The people who are not jaded and like what Brad has to offer will support his game the others moaning about Brad's past are just your typical bitter mmo players who will never be happy with any mmo.

Like they haven't made mistake in the past, things is most of them throw their money at every new shiny mmo without question.

It was a big shock at the time. But than every other new AAA MMO failed too. And Vanguard proved to be the LAST real MMO attempted. In fact if his company was not closed and Vanguard sold to SOE , who kept it on ice so its not competing with EQ. Vanguard would probably be best MMO around.

That being said - Braid is good designer , but horrible producer. He should not be in charge of the game , just its design.

 

Are you serious? Where you even around during launch?

If SOE didn´t step in and throw in an extra 25 million in funding, the game wouldn´t have even been launched!

As Microsoft saw Braid was just burning Money and pulled out half way during Development! 

Had to stop reading there because that's not actually what happened. I'm not sure why some of you keeping latching onto rumors and false info in an effort to roast a founder of the genre, but...

It's well documented and understood that when Sigil was being funded by Microsoft, MS went through a massive personel shift. The CEO who was in charge of the MMO division got ousted, and the new guy said "We don't want to develop an MMO", and cut funding. SoE agreed to finish the game, but then decided to try to launch the game 8 months earlier than agreed upon, the same week as the Burning Crusade.

As for when SoE stepped in, it was not 5 months after launch. And they didn't have a sizable dev team, they had a skeleton crew. As for what they did, they didn't focus on releasing new content, they focused on making the game more like WoW, thinking that the problem was the gameplay, not the bugs. Then they never advertised the game again.

He touched Vangaurd and as you say, it went to hell.

You are very seriously mistaken if you think SOE does not have the monetary horsepower to do whatever they want. Honestly.

However, having the cash and wanting to throw it away on a product that did not return at all what is cost to produce, is another story. especially when you have several big fish cooking already. EQL/EQN - EQ2 is getting some fresh numbers since F2P got fixed, and EQ1 yes still has servers going.

Dragons Prophet while not a huge success, last I checked was above water level, PS2 is doing fine, etc etc. SoE won't lose money and there is no reason for them to assume the risk. Besides anything they wanted to so with VG 2, they could do with EQN. Simple.

However, them not having the money to afford it, is not the issue at all. More so they have enough sense to avoid the debacle.

If you want a new idea, go read an old book.
