OP  1/02/14 9:01:15 AM#1

Not currently playing.  I did play for about 2 months and got a toon to max level.  I was kind of forced into trying this game out by a friend.

Was surprised how much I enjoyed it.  It has some of the best graphics and sound of any game out right now.  You can start grouping pretty much right away for dungeon crawls.  Love the non tab target combat.  Felt visceral on my Guardian.  I can honestly say I never had so much fun smashing my shield into a mob's face.  Character development was a lot deeper than I expected it to be.

Thought the pvp was good.  Enjoyed it from 10 to 60.  Never felt pay to win to me, I spent a total of 20 dollars in the cash shop and always felt competitive...used the money to buy a bind to account mount.  Rarely I would run up against someone who obviously had spent a ton of money and destroyed me, but for the most part it wasn't a problem.

Game needs more classes, more pvp maps, and my biggest problem was people exploiting through dungeons at high level.  Its definitely not a super deep game and you will get bored if you are a hardcore 12 hour a day gamer.  But for f2p this was a shining star in 2013.  Much better than a lot of the triple A mmos which have come out over the last few years in my opinion.

Do not understand for the life of me why this game was so poorly received.  I will be going back to it from time to time to check it out.

Why is it that fantasy trolls are vulnerable to fire, but internet trolls thrive on flame wars?

Six words: Perfect World Entertainment and Cryptic Studios.  That sums up the vast majority of the hate; they don't hate the game, just the people who developed/produced it, and claim that therefore they should hate the game.

Since when is Tuesday a direction?

I didn't think it was poorly received. A lot of people played it, then moved on. You must admit the multiple currencies are a grindy mess and limit long-term appeal. Not a flop though, as you are implying.

The game got a screwed up economy since launch, they didn't do anything to solve the problem it seems.  Some people hacked / dupped, and since then the game has gone down the drain.      Another reason on why to wipe everything at launch and not give anyone a head start.

It was busy at release and quite fun, and I spent a lot of time in the quest builder tool.  Then I got bored and moved on, as happens with most recent mmo's.

In my opinion..

1.  The Game just doesnt feel like Dungeons and Dragons, but to be honest D&D hasnt felt right to me since 2nd edition.

2.  Telegraphing attacks by painting a big red circle is a bit to much hand holding.

3.  This much instancing makes the game feel less like a world and more like a hub game.

4.  Character customization as far as abilities and fighting style go is very underwhelming.

Just my personal preferences of course.

Probably because of the name Neverwinter; like other well known and popular IP's (Star Wars, Star Trek, etc), there are a lot of existing fans who have high expectations. Add to that the obvious cash-grab and a shallow game, and those expectations are dashed, causing unhappy players.

RIP City of Heroes. One of my favorite MMO's.

I think the game is fun, but the prices for stuff in the store is way out of hand.

I thought the game was fun, but I don't like the nickeland dime model so I just tossed it aside. I don't like f2p

I think anytime a developer takes a very popular IP and turns it into a game (especially a MMO) it's going to get criticism for the design decisions.

Oh and saying that just because you only occasionally ran into people who spent tons of money to get a competitive advantage over you doesn't mean the game isn't Pay 2 Win it's just very expensive Pay 2 Win which is pretty standard fare for PWI.   They seem to prefer to cater to the top end whales with their products which is why I don't play any of their games.

Yeah, actually those are two reasons right at the top of my list.  Pretty sure neither company is capable of creating a MMORPG that I would enjoy, so I pretty much write them off right from the start.

Couple of other things I've read about the game also turned me off. Not really a virtual world design, mostly instance based, limited classes (4, 6 right? I'm used to 44), cash shop use may impart significant benefits, almost to the point of being really required to fully enjoy the game, and some other stuff all added up to a title not worth trying.

I don't hate NW, I just am not interested in it.

I think this is the key point. Neverwinter is a fun game, but it's not a "main" mmo. (maybe I even wrote before somewhere that it became my favourite second-line game in this year, but just the second line)

I think that fact (or misunderstanding) is behind the biggest chunk of the so-called hate. Lots of folks waited for a new D&D game, and measured it to DDO. Others waited for a NWN 3-ish game with an online mode and a massively updated Aurora. Some waited for a new main mmo home, and found a huge end grind and a heavy cash shop.

Neverwinter is a fun, quick, easy game, perfect for occasionally hop in and play 30-60 minutes and then logging out. It's designed that way, with the many daily cooldowns, the short events, the offline web support, etc. Playing it more than that, "hardcore" as the OP wrote, is a straight way to boredom and burning out.

I don't think I've played more than 2 hours at once, ever, during this near 1 year... Besides the Foundry ofc :) in there you can goofing a lot.

Fun is very subjective.  I did not find the combat enjoyable nor the character customization.  Those are the two most important things for me in an mmorpg so tbh, there isnt anything about neverwinter that I would call "fun".

Boring combat with very little class customization.

Repeititive gameplay with I swear less than 10 monster models which you see in the 1st 40 levels of the game and a laughably cliched  "story"

Kind of a dumbed down insult to one of my favorite games of all time  (NWN2)

Horrible cash shop which saturates the game

Admit I sort of had fun with it for the 1st week or 2 I played but it gets old fast. The foundry had potential but they even messed that up by not screening the entries so most of the stuff in there is total crap (even if some of the foundry quests are way better than the game quests)

DDO isn't perfect but sort of captures the feeling of real D&D at least way better than NWO.

I've become dependent upon spell check. My apologies for stupid grammatical errors.

1/02/14 11:50:21 AM#16

Most of it is probably "Perfect World/Cryptic", but some of it might originally stem from the shift in the game's development from a multiplayer D&D RPG system with a toolset for DMing to a more standardized MMO/MMORPG. It may actually be a D&D RPG system with a toolset for DMing, but the customers being targeted are the standard MMO/MMORPG customers so the game's focus will eventually be some sort of standardized product.

Or not. It could all be "Perfect World/Cryptic".

For every large, complex problem, there is a simple, clear solution that also happens to be absolutely wrong.

I've played Neverwinter since the beta and am still enjoying it overall. I did take a break for a while, but came back with the release of Shadowmantle and the Hunter Ranger. I like the combat system and I can't imagine playing games like WOW with 30 buttons to click anymore. I'm learning to live with the grind, which I haven't been able to do in other games. Neverwinter's campaign system at least provides rewards for grinding with boons. I've been running the epic dungeons with my guild and while they are challenging, I am learning and have fun while doing it.

I do have issues with the price of items in the Zen shop. I also find the crafting in the game boring and the new refinement system is another cash grab. I still like the game and it can be played without spending money, but I think the sense of greed is where a lot of the hate is coming from.

I was expecting this, but I got that...I think sums up most of the hate for the game. It's not that there's anything wrong with neverwinter, it's that it wasn't made for the person who's unhappy with it.

When you're not the target audience you either accept it and look elsewhere or you bitch and moan about the industry making crappy games NO ONE plays!

i dont grade a game by those that develope it. i went through the star wars nge and ive been through my ups and downs with blizzard. i also went through the huge mess by ea/mythic and ea/bioware with warhammer and swtor. sure those companies really screwed things up with those games but it doesnt stop me from trying other games by those same companies. i judge a game purely based on my actual experience playing the game. not others opinions or articles ive read or the companies that produce them.

If you ask why someone doesn't like something and the give you an answer, I wouldn't call that bitching and moaning. I would say that you came into this thread wanting to bitch and moan about others expressing opinions. Perusing a forum where people express opinions on a subject and then acting as if those opinions are any less valid than your own is nonsense.
