Really never gave this game a shot because people were telling me it was bad. I have to say its been kind of fun for me. Love any mmo that lets you make a custom class.

I agree that the customization class-wise does make it a better game and makes it feel more in-depth in that regard. However I think that most people refer to it as a "bad" game due to it being very generic. Personally I tried to get into it on several different occasions, but never could. Hope you enjoy your time with it though. I've heard endgame is pretty fun.

The class system is really where this game shines, I loved my cleric in it for that very reason. The questing is fun once through, too.

The only luck I had today was to have you as my opponent.

12/17/13 8:29:20 PM#4

I didnt do much questing, after level 10 i tuck to intant adventures and dungeons.

it feels very...gray until you hit 60 then the character armor begins to color up more.

It's no WoW but dungeons have bosses with mechanics. It's a nice change of pace.

I really like Rift´s class system!

Used to play as a Chloromancer and simply loved it!

I made a dps melee Cleric that has a few range spells and pets. I went Justicar / Shaman / Druid. Only lvl 20 now might switch Druid to something else later as the two pets are lvl capped at 24 for  some reason.

As you spend points in the Druid soul the level cap is raised.

I like the custom builds but do have a couple of issues: -

  • There are too many builds/ souls for each character for my liking, they should have limited it to a couple of options for a couple of alternative play styles (I am sure most will disagree, but I prefer some specialisation).
  • I do not like the fact that everyone can do everything- why does a mage need to tank and a warrior need to heal?  For me it makes a mockery of having classes:- If you are going down that road you may as well just have a completely open skill tree and allow a magic user to wear heavy armour if that's what they choose to spend there points on, or a tanky type to rely on dodging and parrying.
The game is generic but implemented very well, and the rifts and adventures make levelling fly by without an overwhelming sense of grind.

Unfortunately the game is very light on any lore or even any sense of continuity between zones, which seem to have been designed on the developer's whim for were-wolves, undead, the next fantasy trope.  This means that the adventures do have the effect of further removing you from any real immersion in the world as you do not need to interact with anyone or anything other than jumping from one group of mobs to the next.  But then I had a similar problem with GW2 and many people seem to like the heart and events system.

The end-game is also a pure gear grind which does not appeal to me in the slightest so I did not stay around for it.

All-in-all though, I quite enjoy it from time to time.

Yep, disagree indeed :)

I never was into Rift (was way too wow-ish for my taste) but that little theory crafter inside just loved the soul system. I remember I stopped around (or after) 20 with the game itself, and dived into the trees, external builder sites, etc. and putting the points up and down... That, and the dimenions of course, which is great. Then it expired and I left.

At the f2p switch I went back (awesome f2p model btw), and it was the same :) leveled a mage to 20ish (still way too wow-ish...), goofing around with the souls for two weeks, and then I left again.

So even if I'm not the ideal Rift supporter, I heavily disagree, the soul system is great as the way it is. And the dimension system too. And the f2p model. And the Rifts, with a good group. Damn, I should check back. :)

If only it'd be a little less wow-clone...

It's a good game but the abilities get way to complex for me as far as choosing which ones to use. All in all though the game is very fun and has a lot to do in it. I liked the open world pvp especially!

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

Rift looked good, class system was good, etc. My only quirk and a HUGE pet peeve of mine is the character animations. I tried the game 4 times since release and I can't get past the 20's because I get fed up with how bad my toon looks running. I know this is a personal preference thing, I'm not saying the game is bad in any ways, but for me, I just couldn't get past this. Of all things that I like or dislike in MMO"s, I think probably the quickest thing to steer me away from a game is if the animations are wierd.

I have a deep hatred for the concept of tailoring your abilities to fit the situation as opposed to making the most of your abilities to overcome the situation.  So for me, the class system is a fail.  In Rift you are expected to have multiple builds so you completely lose your sense of character.  And its a shame, because the class building can be fun.  But since there is no meaningful choice in it, it becomes a shallow experience.

Rift's biggest problem though is a lack of soul.  Everything is bland:  awful races, mediocre lore, bad presentation.  The one exception to this is Ember Isle, which was fantastic.  But they failed to keep that level of inspiration.

However for people that dont care about their character having an identity or the game world, Rift is a good game.  Not everyone cares about those things, just as not everyone cares about the animations.

For me, the gates will open.

I disagree with the "lack of soul" and Generic comments about the game.

Just because the game isn't made from an existing IP doesn't mean that the lore is weak. The construction of the ward? how the battle of port scion pitted the two factions against each other? Both sides are technically right it just depends of what point of view you have? To this day I refuse to play a guardian because of the religious zealotry of the guardians.

The Eth? a race of humans who's empire rose and fell with the discovery of forbidden technology that weakened the ward, why the rifts happen, the brood swarm, all these things are fairly original, do they have "influences" from other IP's? Yes it does but find me a IP made after the 50's that doesn't borrow or evolve concepts of fantasy.

There is plenty of soul, but as it is the only game or product associated with it's own IP you have to look for it in the game itself and through official media released from Trion just to expand lore. Orphial Farwind and the faceless man are interesting characters to me, then with the xpac you make contact with the lost continents of the world to discover a civilization that is a little more balanced and less radical than either of the player factions. Which allowed for more cooperation from the two sides.

There are still issues with the lore, a lot of the quest dialogue was obviously written by the same person, generic npc's have the same "voice" in their text, but all the main characters are distinct. There are definitely performance problems with rift when you get too many people on screen, and some various other problems that don't make the game perfect.

Please just don't give this game's lore the same treatment as the countless other churned out generic MMO's out there. it really is not. Yes there is a force trying to destroy/control the world, multiple actually, yes there are factions at war, but seriously you cannot make the story for a combat based PVE and PVP game without those over-arcing story lines. If you want a villain that is not in some sort of way pitting themselves against the characters, and a war for PVP with no reason, well....not sure how to explain the fallacy in this premise aside from emotional/economic engagement is normally required to move people to action.

This.

I must of tried every character in the game and they are all just meh.  Can,t connect with any of them.  So much so I have given up.

Their abilities are just bland and the class system which has mages dishing out more damage than warrior tanks is just pants.  I died more as a warrior in planar armour and buffed to hell than I ever did as a mage of the same level.  In fact I only ever died once as a mage class.

The whole race/class system is just bland.

I actually still like MMORPGs

I wanna give it another go. Might try to make a warrior that dual wields casts spells and has a pet. All while wearing a robe(cosmetically)

Mmm that sounds like a dream

The action in the game can get very repetitious and dungeons and raids are really the primary rewarding activities which sort of takes the wind out of my sails.

The housing could be excellent if it was further developed and opened up a bit. Some of the dimension instances are far too small.

The dungeons in this game are some of my favorite. The boss mechanics are good. The different achievements and accomplishments are cool and Master Mode dungeons are just how I like challenging small group (5 person) content.

Hope you don't plan on raiding.  Because that custom class will be a cookie-cutter spec in no time.  Which is fine, actually.  I have no problems with cookie-cutter specs at endgame.  Kind of the price you pay for doing those raids.  As long as you have some freedom to design your class while leveling, I'm happy.  That's one thing Rift did very well.

Now the combat...ummm...that is something they didn't do very well.

I think you may be right. I hit lvl 32 and i'm still changing specs. because i can't seem to get it right.  And combat is meh. i hate RNG in mmo's. It just makes it seem fake. Standing in front of mobs and missing them annoys me. I understand why most warrior classes in the game are pissed that mages are a better dps class.

You're doing something wrong then buddy, couple warrior dps souls were buffed couple months ago which resulted in them being FoTM x2 already, and seeing how understaffed and slow Trion has become in updating this game (old rehashed content doesnt count) it's gonna be like that for a while. WL is still pretty fin op as well. You have it all, survivability, top deeps from range and melee and pre max level youve a spec that can one shot almost everyone. Friend of mine who recently came back to the game (used to be a pretty good raider so deffo not a random newbie) is leveling his first warrior and from what he says, in WF's as long as he's dealing with 3 or less of any other class, it's an easy job destroying them solo. Anyway, point is, your warrior is OP, you're just not utilizing it properly yet.
