The biggest threat to WoW, is Wow itself.  They are slowly ruining themselves and nothing can be a WoW killer, because there is only WoW Suicide.

Only WoW can kill itself, just like other games have.

This imo has been proven over and over again.

Also WoW didn't make a serious impact on any of the previous games either.

Rift at release was "wow done better" - Rift today is vastly different and stands on its own, but it made no impact on WoW.

GW2, FF14ARR..… no impact.

Wildstar won't be any different.

IMO folks who love WoW - stick with WoW.

Clueless.

Wow is down over 6 million subs, they didn't all just leave the genre.

Last I heard WoW was at 7.6million, not 6 million.

Sorry, who's clueless?

Most I'd bet. They want something that isn't WoW but still has a familiar feel. That's what I want anyway.

Actually WoW is the MMO Genre now. It's the most widely known MMO game, and widely played MMO game, and will continue to be for a very long time. It will become a relic when it has thousands of people playing it, not millions.

He's not clueless. I also think the numbers of players who simply left the genre are much higher than you think. WoW is 10 now. Many players were in their teens and 20s are now in the upper 20s and 30s. They "grew up". ( I never did) I know of many people who found other hobbies. 10 years ago, I played WoW with a circle of people I knew and people they knew in real life. At one point, we were half a guild. Now, none of them play anymore. I am the only one left.

It's the sad state of the genre. The next big title has as many threads discussing issues with it's business model than issues with the game itself.

i agree

before WOW launched, Blizzard was world renown for Warcraft series

- a 10 year old game franchise   (first warcraft game was 1994)

having fans of Diablo and Starcraft didnt hurt too

I forgot about that, some of WOW's strength comes from the strong following Blizzard had (and has) as a publisher of successful games.

In fact, I played WOW more for my fond memories of Starcraft and Diablo 1 more than than anything else.

Well and it was new and I was frustrated with my lack of progress in Lineage 2 at the time.

I don't think so. WoW didn't get it's growth because all those people that never played an MMORPG before were fans of Warcraft. It grew to millions because everyone ELSE was playing. The IP was just a bonus for those familiar with fantasy. We have already seen how a popular IP doesn't spell a great following. It really is all about how the game plays.

I think because Wildstar has the originality that far too many MMOs lack is one of it strong points and sets it apart.

I'm curious, what exactly is so original about Wildstar, seems very much a game along the lines of vanilla WOW, what am I missing?

You brought up IP to the discussion and that is what I'm talking about. Are you trying to tell me that the lore of Wildstar is a clone of Warcraft or something?

If that is your criteria for a relic, cool. It will happen eventually. WoW will be the PacMan of MMO games and it will only be played as a novelty in the future.

Let's build the ultimate MMO 1 feature at a time

I think this game may actually hit WoW's subs hard. Unlike so many other WoW clones, this seems to be doing what WoW did, but better. The stylized graphics are sharper, the combat more slick. It is adding housing which Blizzard is attempting to answer with their own version. The crafting is a more customizable version of WoW's tried and true system. I think this is less of a WoW clone and more of a WoW v2.0

They are doing what Blizzard did to EQ. And they may just beat them at their own game. I think Anet tried to beat WoW by going the polar opposite route. But Wildstar seems to have everything that a WoW fan enjoys, but better.

The storylines and characters are tounge in cheek and full of pop culture references, the raids seem bigger and badder, exploration is a career path.

I think WoW just may take its biggest subscription hit when this game launches. And I think Blizzard knows it.

Honestly not a post I expected to see from you. Not that I agree or disagree, for my taste it is still way to early to make that call so I will sit and watch a while longer.

Shame this topic had to be brought up here. If this could be discussed in a less hostile/troll infested environment it could be pretty interesting.

If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

Originality is overrated. yes it has a lot of similar features that Wow has (or numerous other themepark mmos). But, in my opinion, it has enough to distinguish itself so that it can thrive. Plus it is fun to play (I realize this is purely subjective though).

No, I wasn't suggesting it was cloning Warcraft's lore, in fact I'm not even aware that Wildstar has a lore.  Originality in lore isn't a bonus if no one know of it.

Which is really the point, WOW brought a long tradition of IP/lore with it, which many of the early adopters were well familiar with and it helped draw them to the game.

Wildstar's is largely unknown, I'll bet even by the more hardcore gaming player base out there.

Er, no, it's not.  I am most definitely looking for a new MMORPG that plays significantly different than the standard theme park model, (think along the lines of EVE)  so this title is not likely to be of interest to me.  But for those looking for another version of this model, it might prove quite the hit.

Even ESO appears to have more variation just by having a strong focus on a PVP end game, instead of a raid centric gear grinder.

Who did wrong? The advertiser hired to sell the game or the consumer who put faith in advertising?

Well, in the OPs defense, it is titled 'possibly' and uses the term 'threat' rather than killer, a 'threat' implies the possibility of being averted, and finally, the OP alluded to his own surprise, as he is typically very skeptical.

That being said, WoW Killer threads are maddening....however, I kinda see the OPs point on this one, and I never have found they had much merit before either.

Wow, the billionth "this mmo will be the wow killer or equalizer" thread for an upcoming mmo.  Oh yes,  I'm sure this will definitely be the one.
