Also I have Dev C++ for the programming and coding. Lastly I have the Adobe and Microsoft suite for creating concepts. I am 16 years old and have NO money until at least a month from now so I cannot create a domain as of yet, but I am experienced in Dreamweaver so when I do get a domain I will be able to create the website myself. All of the programs listed I have a decent ability with cooperating  with them. I'm going to be doing this with me and a friend of mine, and whoever else will be willing to help out over the internet. Thank you for you help, and please reply.

I'm gonna assume this thread is serious. Don't write her "start with something simple", because it never works and only pisses people off. Who doesn't hate it, when someone says they can't do something? No one ever listens to that advice, it only makes it worse.

Nobody's saying she can't do it.

Starting with something simple doesn't mean abandoning what you plan for. It means actually planning.

If she starts on a full-blown MMO right now I can guarantee she'll fail. I can guarantee it'll become one giant clusterfuck of quickly patched mistakes.

In small projects you can make mistake and have the space to fix them properly, learning from that experience on how to avoid it in the future. In large projects that's not nearly as easy, you've got tons of other systems interacting and a to-do list spanning several pages.

So if you want to actually do it, actually want to make an MMO. Start small. Give yourself the time to learn how to do things properly. Grant yourself the achievement of actually accomplishing something, even if it's small rather than a continual failure at trying to do something big.

We are the bunny.
Resistance is futile.

Ok first of all congrats on taking the leap to make your dreams a Reality! With enough dedication and time you CAN see your dreams come true. It won't be easy though and when you feel like giving up just push forward!

Now Blender Game Engine isn't going to get you to where you need to be. Nothing wrong with Blender as a Modeling package but you need a much more powerful Game Engine then that!

You have a few options but giving the fact you have no money I'll list 2 one is less complicated then the other.

Least Complicated Method: Learn C# and use Unity3D. C# and Unity3d is a winning combo and with the free version of Unity it can't be beat.

Method 2: More complicated however gives you more freedom in the long run. Learn C++. Use Ogre3D for your Graphics and other Opensource Libraries to complete your own Game Engine. You would need Physics, Networking, UI, Audio, and many others.

a) don't focus too much on the wrong things, especially in the early stages. Programming/engines/etc. are irrelevant until you have your design fully thought through (both in terms of game-design&systems and art direction) and your budgeting planned out. You need these first to even be able to decide which technical implementation fits your game best. You don't want tech to dictate your design, it should always be the other way around.

b) Do not underestimate game-design. I know everyone thinks they are a great game-designer... they are not. Game-design is just as deep and complicated and needs just as much learning, training and practice as any other field you'll encounter on your journey.

c) Don't underestimate how many different areas of knowledge&skill you'll have to cover. Tech & design are important ones ofcourse, but there is a lot more. And it all has to work perfectly in tandem or the game doesn't have a chance to succeed (or even get finished)

d) make assembling a strong team your focus. You'll need it for a full MMO.

e) think about ways to acquire funding, be it a Kickstarter campaign, early demos for investors, early access packages or whatever. You'll need some funding for software licenses, externally bought assets, setting up test servers & running alphas/betas, marketing and much more.

I wish you great luck and a lot of fun on the adventure! It will be hell of a fun ride, that much is sure.

I very strongly agree.  I find it as the most elusive of skillsets.

My first game, an MMORPG, was a disaster in terms of game design.  It ran well enough and was relatively bug-free, but the game design was severely lacking.  There's much more to it than assembling a bullet point list of features and fitting them together into a game.  It ended up more as a playable tech demo.

Yo, I see your 16 and wish and really want to make an MMORPG (Elder Scrolls)
If you got really much experience, then I mean 3-5 years aleast programming skills or 3D Design and texture skills.

If you dont have that, it's going to be nearly impossible.. I'm working with C# similair too C++ and my Game Soruce it's "Unity3D"..

And to make an small game with Characters and some mobs take nearly 1 year, then its not a big game. If you got many friends that are really intressting and got experience maybe you can finish an game in 3-5 years, but then you need to put in atleast 7hour+ per day...

But if your going to make an easy MMORPG, its going to take maybe 6 month with experience.

The problem with MMORPG its the server, the server cost really much. But you can build an own server home maybe cost 2000$ for an 2000players server, but you need atleast 500mb - 1000mbit/sec then we talk upload.

1. - Get a engine that is a MMO engine.

2. - Port all the assets of your favorite game to the MMO engine. Rework the core scripts for MMO game play.

3. - Call it a learning experience.

Skyrim is easy to work with and lots of mods to port.

The skeptic in me says that name is on the internet as the name of a porn star. Any 16 year old girl is smart enough not to use their real name on an internet forum as their first post. They are already making an MMO from that company, how could you be a fan of it and not know that.

I think this is a gotcha'.

It could even work well to start on an MMO by starting with a minigame intended to become part of the mmo.

Teens who want to make MMOs aren't usually intentional trolls, just over-confident because the underestimate the sheer amount of work and overestimate the amount and quality of volunteer labor they can get.

Facebook? Plus I don't see how people could stalk her from just her name if they didn't know anything else (not that I would try lol)

But Skyrim would flat out not work as an MMO for a lot of reasons, that's why ESO is not going to be exactly the same as Skyrim.

If it was as simple as just "MMOify Skyrim" BethSoft would do that themselves.

MMO development teams require millions of dollars and dozens of people and many years working full time.  You don't have what it takes, sorry.  Wishful thinking is not reality.

Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, Aion, Allods, lots more
Relatively Recently (Re)Played: HL2 (all), Halo (PC, all), Batman:AA; AC, ME, BS, DA, FO3, DS, Doom (all), LFD1&2, KOTOR, Portal 1&2, Blink, Elder Scrolls (all), lots more

If the thread started off "Hello my name is Andrew Walker..." it would be dead already.

If they would have listed the age as 18, this thread would be up over 10 pages already.

She might actually have what it takes but I suggest looking into programming school and/or starting with a less ambitious game if she is serious. Nothing wrong with having a dream (although a little realism about what's required also helps).

Hello Cassandra,

I am currently working on an extremely large Skyrim Mod. I'm not sure what your time is like but I work a full time job and then my free time is what I make of it. Besides friends, dating, writing, and trying to have fun, I put in as much time as possible. For instance, today I worked most of the day on one large room as I was trying to figure out the best type of puzzle/traps that I would need and was constantly scrapping the design to come up with something better.

I've been working on this mod for maybe about a year? And I might be half way done if that.

Why am I telling you this?

Because, as others have said, starting smaller, actually creating and finishing a project, will give you some credentials, especially if it's good. Or better yet "great".

If you have all those tools at your disposal, as well as help, you will be able to do this in less time (depending on scope).

Here is a link of another modder who put over 2,000 hours into a very large skyrim mod:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-07-17-hey-bethesda-this-19yo-spent-2000-hours-making-a-25-hour-skyrim-mod

Here is another one:

and one more, this is a video, looks great:

I would cut your teeth on something where you dont' have to reinvent everything and if it's amazing you might gather others to your "cause" and possible form a group that will then be able to think about more large mods or eventually an entire game.

But I would try to finish something first. the "gamescape" is littered with games that have been started and then abandoned. Why stack the deck against yourself when you can build up slowly?

Here are some quick screen shots from my project. Still lots of work do be done on these rooms and others! I imagine someone with coding experience and help and time will be able to truly do some amazing things. So go for it!

ok fine two more as I I've only shown my work to one person this entire time:

In any case, think of all the great things you can do, starting out, without having to reinvent the wheel.

If you are a real person and not a social experiment, listen to Sovrath. If you are a social experiment, best of luck with your research.

Truth of the matter is if you want to create an MMORPG that is actually good, you are going to need a team of dedicated workers.

I have been wanting to do this myself for a very long time. However, even with my credentials, it's hard to find people who are willing to work on such a side project for no pay. Most are not willing to wait and hope the project is successful. This is why most developers never work on their own projects, they work for other companies that give them a guaranteed pay check.

Personally, I am an artist and am able to work on pretty much every aspect on the art side of games. I am able to do textures, level design and modeling as an example. I do have to point out, I am not very good at character design, mainly have issues with anatomy. I can do cars though rofl ...

-.- Gosh that is such an old model .. one of my firsts

I have even gone to the Art Institute for this subject and even learned the business end of game design.

I know all this, and as I said .. it's still really hard to get people to trust you. Really the easiest way to gather up a team is from schooling. I wasn't able to do that since my life sort of took me on a separate path from them.

Now as others have said, it's much easier to get involved in the modding community for a game. It's also a great way to work up credentials, and get practice. Just remember this though, about 95% of developers never work on their own projects and are always working on someone elses.

If the thread started off "Hello my name is Andrew Walker..." it would be dead already.

If they would have listed the age as 18, this thread would be up over 10 pages already.

Ahahahahaha Now you have me imagining some young boy who posted somewhere and didn't get help then he decided to flip the script.

Angrily writing he types while thinking... I'm a girl yes... and a young girl.... then they'll answer me for sure and take me seriously.. so what if I'm 14. Quick, a name, Jolly Rancher - no, too obvious, Cassandra? .... yeah... Cassaaaaaaandra... that's the sort of girl a guy wants to talk to and an older woman to add some mystery. Hey Cassaaaaaaaaaandra, got any more bubble gum? Hey Cassaaaaaaaaandra, want to meet me in detention, we can work on my computer game together - snort, giggle.

That is so funny to me at 3am.
