" Forced to play alone" HAHA! in an MMORPG no less.

 

I remember back in EQ1 you were pretty much forced to group to even play the game. Playing solo was unthinkable and near impossible.

Now, you can faceroll through entire games alone. Grouping has become a negative thing.

Bringer of Eternal Darkness and Despair, but also a Nutritious way to start your Morning.

I have this mental image of a gamer tied to a chair in front of a computer with an evil Developer standing next to him pointing a gun towards the gamer's head saying "play this damn MMORPG solo and like it, or you've had it. 

More seriously, you aren't forced to play the content, you have the option to play it, the fact it can only be done solo is a design consideration, no one is forcing you to do it.

I imagine if one wants they can completely skip these solo story lines if they so chose, much as I frequently skip group oriented content in most modern games today.

Turned around its the same question as asking why you have to do raid content with another person, why can't you solo it.

Because you just can't, it's not designed like that, play what you want or can and skip what is uninteresting or unpleasant to you.

Too many mmo's allow you to play alone. I'm tired of it. Full on group mmo would be nice for a change. It's been way to long since there was one out there. People will complain when the next mmo that requires groups to do anything comes out, but they have 100 mmo's to choose from. Let there be a group based mmo!

 

But yeah, no one will create one because groups are scury.

Once I realized that ESO is not an MMO but instead a TES game with multiplayer elements it became a lot easier for me to be excited. This is pretty much what everyone was asking for but now they're balking at it.

Problem is you cant have it all

 

But, if they have the resources available, they should make it so that the content scales with the number of players and allow you to invite friends into your personal story like in GW2..

 

Scaling is allready supported by the engine and it should be a major feature of these games..

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

The same way I felt about being forced to group for some quests which gave powerful items in some other mmos - I was annoyed if I could not find a group.The game should give the option to play as you want - in group or solo not force you. Being forced to solo parts of the game is as bad as being forced to group with some people who don't even bother to talk while in a party or are always in a hurry to get the loot.
Voted for being able to play the main story with friends.

I would venture to guess by some of the comments and the OP some of you haven't even played in the betas. Anyone who is an ES fan should be pleased with what they are trying to accomplish with ESO. It is NOT a solo centered MMO. It encourages people to play together. Some of the content even in the betas (without going into to detail and breaking NDA) is very much group oriented.

 

Light your fires elsewhere. If you haven't played the betas then do not assume you have an idea what the game offers.

@OP, if we are going to use developer statements here, then let us not forget the statement that has been stated time and time again by Zenimax and the developers:

"ESO is a TES game first, and mmo second."

Based on that statement alone, I expect a single player experience at times since TES games up until ESO have all been single player experiences.  From what has been shown, you are not 'forced' to play the game alone.  Only the main storyline, as far as has been publically stated, is a personal instance.  They have stated you can bypass this content.  YOU ARE NEVER FORCED TO PLAY ALONE.  To do so is your OPTION.  This, one would think, is to be expected from a game based on single player experiences first and foremost.

Couple things to consider.

1) Whether game elements fit into someone's preconceived notions about how a game should play based on its genre or IP is futile. I have heard countless "this isn't a TES game" and "MMOs should have no solo content" posts lately that it's insane. Judging a game by a feature before you have tried that feature in that game seems like limiting your possibilities for fun. It's implementation that matters, not the label. I don't care for cabbage but I will knock over an old lady to get to some some homestyle slaw. 

2) Zenimax cares about grouping. They cited the decision to go with a class system as a way to encourage grouping. They want people to use teamwork to engage in PvE and to compete in AvA. They are merely providing some solo content IN ADDITION to all this to facilitate differing playstyles in a game filled with people who prefer... wait for it... different playstyles. That's something you can do in a MMO, and there's no reason to think they can't do both things well.

Seems like many are upset that Matt didn't draw a line in the sand and say "You either get an MMO or you get an ES game" and instead decided to provide both.

My answer to the poll: if it's done in a fun, engaging fashion, I don't care what additional modes of gameplay are offered.

Seriously, what part about multi-player doesn't make sense to people?  

I play with my wife also.  In SW:TOR bringing each other in for the main story was awesome!  The solo parts are why she quit TSW and ARR.  

I don't play MMO games to be some solo god like hero, isn't that what the single player games are for?  I play MMO games because I like to defeat challenges by actively cooperating with other players.

The ability to do something productive solo is always important to me.  There's always times when I logon and there just aren't enough people to get something going.  But restricting content to solo in MMO games is a real pet peave of mine.

Gonada Dahung,over 20 years of mmorpg's and counting....Please Lord, let someone make a game that had all the awesomeness of UO, EQ and EVE...

This game is multiplayer, you are correct. As such, there are others playing. Some of them are A) ES fans and B) not you or your wife. They would like some solo content to go along with the multiplayer content, which encompasses the vast majority of the game. They don't want to turn the game off and go play a SP game because they want to play the new ES game, and Zenimax doesn't want them to turn it off either.

i'm thinking the developers should just stop talking about their game

it just gets more depressing

i've got three reasons now not to purchase this game, let alone pay a monthly fee

first - there is no personal housing at release

second - to get anything out of crafting - which means selling to other players to me - requires that not only do i have to belong to a guild but that guild has to participate in pvp

now third - this
