What's with this "no one is playing" crap? The game's just as if not more populated than it has been in a long time. There are queues for WvW, Lion's Arch is constantly hopping, I see people in most any zone I visit, the Living Story content always draws swarms of players (regardless of the local trolls claims), they're actually in an enviable position for an MMO right now.

Then you have these ridiculous whines about temporary content, like is some great evil. Well, let's take a realistic look at that, shall we? How many expansions has WoW had where they've added permanent content. (All of them, right?) New raids, new dungeons, lots of stuff, yes? When was the last time you saw someone raiding in the old content? Aside from the rare nostalgia tour it's dead, wasted content these days. Hooray, it's permanent, yet it might as well not even be there. Now let's compare that to GW2 and the temporary content. Halloween has come and gone, and people were packing into the content just like they did last year. Why? It was a change, it was "fresh" once again instead of stale, old stuff that sits there forever unused. The Clock Tower once again drew masses of people. The mini-zone constantly had swarms of people, just like last year. Had that been permanent, always there, do you really think people would have gone back after all this time?

Before you whine about permanent content vs temporary, go take a look at the old, cobweb filled permanent content from other games that is sitting there dead and idle. You really think that's better?

The "Real Game" begins at character creation.

All they do is deliver a new instance ,that is not worthy content in my book, that is do it ,finish it and be done with it forever.

Most all other games create dungeons or instances, they just don't make a point of it to let the entire media infrastructure know about it.That is what i don't like about Arena Net they think doing the same old as anyone else is more important when THEY do it.

Make no mistake,i am not saying what GW2 is doing by making a new instance every so often is a bad thing,it is a GOOD thing "of course".It is just that we really shouldn't hear about it,when you have to FORCE your game's  content onto the media, you know you are really stretching your game's worth.Everyone else just does the content, inputs it into the database and moves on to the next,no need to brag about doing what you EXPECT a developer to do.

There is the other thing,Arena Net acts like they are treating players to something special, umm NO,when you release what looks like  a half ass game ,then what you add afterwards is nothing to brag about,it SHOULD have been there on RELEASE not after.

Arena net needs to learn to just make the game, advertise THE GAME and let people decide, don't tell us how great your content is,WE the players will decide that. ANet has ALWAYS been doing this,"We have the best art team" "our offices are the best to work in","we are removing the trinity because we do it for you and make YOUR game better" "We don't have mounts because that ruins the game we are again doing it to make the game better for YOU" on and on and on,they never stop.

Hint...You the developer don't tell us how great your game or team is,WE decide that.I know this is a mmorpg post but Arena Net has been doing this exact tooting of their own horn as well and from day 1.

Pretty much spot-on. This has always aggravated me as well about them. They are far too self-congratulatory, publicly patting themselves on the back for everything they do. It's obnoxious.

Hell, I saw an article where they were still claiming to have created the MMO that changed the genre forever... even months after it had already proven not to. I guess they never got that memo?

But yeah, that self-aggrandizing and arrogance demonstrated by them - especially during its development - is a major turn-off to me, especially now that it's proven to not be warranted, yet they keep doing it. They seriously need a reality check, and to get their feet back on the ground.

Maybe learn a bit of humility while they're at it.

Oh, and one thing about the article. You describe GW2 as free-to-play. It's not free to play. It doesn't require a subscription. However, it still requires a box purchase to play at all. If you have to pay for it, it isn't free. Calling it free-to-play is very misleading, and factually wrong. The word 'free' has a pretty clear definition; there's no ambiguity there.

My philosophy on MMORPGs:

Leveling is what happens while you're playing the rest of the game.

Don't worry about levels. Just play.

Wow, remind me to never put you in charge of a business that needs to advertise and self-promote to help it expand. It would die in a sea of obscurity in no time. And, as a matter of fact, they are changing the genre forever. Even WoW is adapting many of the concepts of GW2 into it's newest content. More and more you hear of new games being event driven. Most importantly, people are actually questioning the archaic subscription model and not looking crazy for doing so.

Take a good look at new games coming out. You'll see elements of GW2 creeping in there.

The game was going incredibly strong UNTIL Living Story, after which the numbers started to plummet.
    • Second, "careful what we wish for"? Sorry, but I don't know anyone that wished for Living Story and it's slew of fluff, adventure by checklist, temporary content. What many of us wished for was for the game to build on it's incredible core strengths, by continually adding to and evolving Dynamic Event content across the game world!
  • The game hasn't floundered because they gave us what we thought we wanted. It is floundering because Arenanet 2013 apparently has no clue what made the core game such a success and decided to go off on the failed tangent which was Living Story. No one asked for that massive waste of development resources. No one!
    • It's become clear that Arenanet lost a lot of key people after launch, likely due to poor compensation following the production of one of the best at-launch MMOs the genre has ever seen. They also apparently retained some vets not via deserved raises, but by promoting to management positions they just are not suited for. Arenanet 2013 is not pre-release Arenanet, not by a mile.
  • Design wise, it all comes back to Dynamic Events and Arenanet's abandonment of the game world. During development, one developer in an interview boasted how efficient their Dynamic Event creation tools were and how they would leverage that efficiency into an aggressive update schedule after launch. Well, apparently, that developer must be one of the ones the studio lost, because after launch suddenly Dynamic Events went from "Easy to produce" to, "Oh, those are too hard". Colin's tease that we could see the number of DEs double or triple in the first year evaporated and even many broken DEs across the game world went unfixed for ages.
    • Apparently, lack of ability to produce Dynamic Event content, likely related to a loss of key talent, led to a new strategy. Living Story.
  • Pretty early on in Living Story, I called them out as fluff, smoke and mirrors updates, meant to try to provide an illusion of substance out of what was not really much content at all. I think that early judgement has been vindicated. Living Story was just one big magic act meant to make a lot of nothing seem like a lot of something. Unfortunately, it was never a very convincing trick and the result is that Arenanet, via the Living Story fiasco, has squandered away much of the game's massive potential.
    • 2013 Arenanet has basically just been spinning it's wheels with content creation busy work that has done nothing to build on the incredible potential this game possessed at launch. In fact, the nature of this "content" has been so counter to the core game that it has turned off many fans who loved the game at launch and couldn't wait to see where it would go next.
  • I find it unbelievable that the author would try to shift any of the blame onto the fans for "asking for something that didn't actually make us happy". Living Story is all Arenanet 2013. The fans didn't want it. It was a complete reversal on many of the core design concepts that made the game great. It has clearly driven more and more players from the game with every update. Yet, they stuck to it in a downward spiral of self delusion, self denial and self destruction.
    • But, hey, it's the most updated MMO in the world, that must mean something, right? Right?

Sorry for the bullet points and indents, trying to make it readable, as the line breaks seem to be being stripped by the editior.

This post is literally perfect and explains why GW2 is in huge trouble. The game is a mountain of gold buried under 2 inches of turds. Continue these useless piecemeal updates and it'll be the next Tortanic.

Currently Playing: ESO,FFXIV, various betas
Have played: You name it.

The only part of GW2 I put any significant time into was WvW, and it was way too casual oriented for me. I definitely agree the type of meaningless content they update GW2 with has never once had me interested in it after I tried the first few ones.

Dozens of MMO's, RTS's, FPS's, etc.

Been enjoying this game since beta. It's had its rough patches, but for the past few months, much of the content has been increasingly challenging.

Really starting with Queen's Jubille, we've had Liadri, Tequatl, new fractals, tower of nightmare, etc...

PvPer will now earn gold. WvW getting a new map for overflowers...

It's good for those who like it and I'm amongst them. Still surprised as to how much hate the game attracts, though...

Player base is much more evenly divided.

Player base in PvE dungeons may have that composition.

A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still

12/06/13 10:37:51 AM#128

I thought they said they would be creating new dynamic events in the game world on a regular basis? I could be wrong though, but it seems they went away from what they advertised pre-launch. I thought by now, the original game world would have a ton more dynamic events, the cities were supposed to have 30+ minigames, and instanced player housing (neighborhoods) would be significant horizontal content.

I think the stuff like super adventure box and the kite thing are neat though. But content wise, Id rather have something the size and scope of what FFXIV is doing with their first patch, than have smaller updates every couple weeks.

But what do I know heh. I'm just making observations based on info from this site haha

If you thought the events were dynamic, you'll think the stories are living.

When will some people learn that critique =/= hate. Though you are surprised a game that put itself up on a pedestal as the future of MMO's and payment models is looked at heavily with critical eyes a year after launch? GW2 has a lot going for it, its a shame the devs focused on the weakest aspects of the game for most future development but as always with business the bottom line rules! so I don't blame them.

This doom and gloom thread was brought to you by Chin Up™ the new ultra high caffeine soft drink for gamers who just need that boost of happiness after a long forum session.

Probably about the time others learn that hate =/= critique.

I have to echo Gaia_Hunter's sentiment. Living World content is a really great optional set of content for players to enjoy or ignore. While this article makes it appear that the new content vanishes every two weeks, forcing players to rush through it, that's hardly the case. The way it actually works is that every two weeks there is a patch containing new story content, dungeons, PvP or WvW maps, balance changes, etc. The new Living Story content will usually stay for a month or longer, creating significant overlap in multiple living stories happening at the same time. These can also overlap with holiday content, which lends itself to some incredibly fun and chaotic cross-over battles. It should also be noted that some content and changes seem to be permanently part of the game; such as Scarlet's forces randomly attacking different regions on giant air-ships. Interested players can rush to save the residents of the area, gaining special rewards and achievements in the process.

Another very strange and inaccurate statement was about the, "temporary content and its close ties to the game's gem store." Not sure where they got this information, but the only thing you can get in the Gem Store is completely optional outfits, mini pets, dye packs, and things that give no benefit to actual gameplay. In fact, ArenaNet usually releases several new weapon and armor skins for both the gameworld and the gem store. And if hard core players want the store versions, they can always trade in-game gold for gems and buy it. This of course will take some time saving the right amount of gold to transfer, but it's no different than running dungeons or fractals or WvW for desired gear.

All-in-all, the article reads as though the author hasn't played the game since launch and is basing everything on the small set of griping players on Reddit and other sites. I personally, am part of the greater majority who would rather have more FREE content every couple weeks than a completely stale world with updates every 6 months or longer. It's a bit shocking that somehow AreneNet is able to provide more content updates than any other MMO with no monthly fees.

Perhaps "most frequently updated", but certainly not "most updated content wise". Any 1 major MoP content update has added more content to WoW than all combined content updates of GW2 thus far. And again, im tlaking pure content additions, not changes or mechanic updates.

I actually quit this game because of jumping puzzles. I'm a completionist and perfectionist, and one day I spent over an hour trying to jump to a stupid vantage viewpoint thingy that, despite all the frustration and RAGE I had in not getting it, the completionist in me demanded I get it, only to stop and say "What am I doing?" and that was that

This was before they started with the living story updates. The completionist perfectionist in me probably would have ended up quitting the game anyways due to being forced to complete the game on THEIR pace instead of my own due to the ticking clock thing. TEMPORARY content is such a stupid idea and a great way to get new players to never join your game once they see all the things they can never get just because they were late to the party, and I don't know why MMO companies don't realize that yet.

Ppl are different. For example I love jumping puzzles. I don't understand ppl who can't do it.

Regarding frequent updates and living story:

I like it. Because I like frequent updates. It's too boring if nothing changed in the game.

If I like an update it will complete it. If not - then skip.

Sometimes updates more interesting, sometimes not.

I like for example bazzar of Four wings, or Crown pavilion and solo arenas wiht Liandri. But I skip S.Adventure BOX completely.

I know fractals here now. But I more like WWW at this moment (tying to put Piken to 3rd place in this www-seazon)

I will do fractals later when decide to look on it.

Also I like to kill Tequatl because have nice drop sometimes.

I like freedom. Nobody force me to play in GW2.

Thank you Anet for amazing game!

Living world has gotten too much recently . I'm a pretty casual player but I could keep up with 1 living world story or event bit to have three and four at a time, and so many achievements is too much and a turn off.

Facts do not require fiction for balance.

I've had days where I couldn't decide what to do, but I've never had days where there was nothing to do.

Works for me.

I find better and funner jumping games in Mario games. I don't need an MMORPG for that.

It doesn't matter how frequent the updates are, what matters more is how much content you get in said updates and how long that content will last the majority of the player base before releasing another update.

it looks like mmos will never please the gamers out there. they all sound and play great initially then everything just seems to go to hell. GG.

Most useless updates i've ever seen. Nothing worth even considering doing. Temporary content everything. Reward system is honestly retarded u get absolutely nothing worth the time invested into doing events themselves.

This is a good "2-3 month" mmo. I advise anyone to stay away from it. After u reach end-level and properly geared up (which is easy to get), u will extremely disapointed in what anet offers u (which is a big 0).

The whole "2week update/event" thing is the bigest marketing scam that was ever created in mmos. They deliver nothing of worth.

======== STAY AWA FROM THIS MMO =========
