Given as I only played EQ2 - and loved it, mind you - I can say it's not EQ nostalgia. I already pretty much acknowledged the fact that this game is NOT Everquest in any way. It feels way different, and it will have a different concept, a different look, a different everything, pretty much.

Why am I a little excited for this game then? Because it might just have enough merit to stand on its own, and to deliver a serious, triple-A sandbox title to the MMO industry. And even if the game itself has a good chance of turning out bad, it might get more people interested into sandboxes, which in turn might prompt more innovative titles to be developed and people experimenting more with the concept.

After WoW was a huge success in the themepark-style MMO world, we all saw how everyone attempted to duplicate the ideas, and how a LOT of design choices were integrated into those games. Maybe EQN triggers something similar ultimately, and finally gives us a shift away from rigid structures and back to things like an actual player driven economy, important crafters, an evolving world etc etc.

I'm not saying EQN will be a success. But it CAN be one if SOE make the right choices. Whether they will or not remains to be seen, but I might at least watch, try the beta, and maybe see how the game feels once it's out there.

No, what we wanted was E V E R Q U E S T.  Next.

Get the emphasis?  Everquest.

This game is not Everquest, only by the largest stretch of the imagination could you call this game EQ, and only because they will name areas after EQ cities, and areas, etc.  Outside of that its a totally different game in every aspect of it.

The game will fail, of that i am confident.

Also, very few of us wanted EQ resurrected.  I'm really sick of that card getting played.  We just want some developers to recognize that maybe, just maybe, some of the core tenets (i said SOME) of the old games like EQ and DAOC had some merit.

Unfortunately everyone is so busy playing "out with the old, in with the new" that they've thrown the baby out with the bathwater.  This is why i know the game will tank hard.

It may be clouded. In short though, it should not be tethered to the EQ franchise and should be namd something completely different. IMHO the name is being used for advertising and should be dropped. This game is not Everquest at all.

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

You may think EQN will fail as an EQ successor but to see what combination of features they'll have and, if they pull it off, say it will fail is a bit disingenuous.

You may want it to fail, but a smoothed out Minecraft with an open class system, adaptable NPCs and content that the players fight for/build up/tear down? Sorry brotha, it will, at the very least, be a mild success. I imagine imagine it will be much more than that and Landmark will be a big hit before EQN.

People want EQN because it isn't WoW, Rift, SWTOR, or < insert themepark game here >

If I want EQ nostalgia, I'll play EQ (which I keep installed).  I want something "new".

It just so happens that that "new" is in Norrath.

As far as I'm concerned I'm going to fall asleep on this project until it's released.

1. it's a long ways off

2. player input unlikely to influence development

yes, it is clouding people's judgment.

i say that as someone looking forward to EQN/L and not a rehashing of the same old thing.

an infinite game for the purpose of continuing play."

I am looking forward to EQnext and I have never played any of the  EQ games I hope that this is a true sandbox and has some cool ideas I guess we will have to wait and see.

Not me.  I hated EQ and EQ2 thought they were the most boring game ever imagined, nothing remotely reminded me of Dungeons and Dragons and this is exactly what I play MMO's for.  Something to carry on passion for pen and paper, small group and explorable worlds that D&D always evoked.  EQN has all the elements I feel will make it a great game FOR ME!  Action combat, limited hotbar to evoke a sense of deck building, huge and immense multi tiered world just ripe for the exploration and epic 3 month long quests.  What's not to love about this game.  As a fan of MMO's and a hater of EQ I feel EQN is going to hit it out of the ball park.

If your idea of a Sandbox is open FFA Full Loot PvP, full crafted world with minimal support for anything combat then your sandbox ideas are bad! Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

I was expecting something completely different, especially after they had the 'mistake' (which seems like maybe a marketing thing or something to mess with people now) of having the 'open beta sign ups' leak out early and it said to help beta test their hardcore game or something like that.

I am not a huge fan of the graphic style, I think the lion looks bad if I am being honest...I will not be using sony emote thing...I loved old EQ (pre super instances), EQ2 never really did it for me (neither did WoW).

I like the exploration stuff, the layers of content.

I am good with 8 abilities but dislike 4 tied to a weapon.

The hint of action combat we will see (I didn't mind it in TSW, hated NW, and thought GW2 was mediocre, while I disliked every class in GW2 I tried).

The building/terraforming stuff is nice, and it seems it will not be instanced, which I love, as I can't stand instanced housing stuff.

They pretty much say they will have open world and instanced content, so we will have to wait and see on that.

The game does look like it will end up being very casual, which is not a bonus for me, but I am willing to wait and see how they do it.

So in the end, it is a mixed bag for me, and I am willing to wait and see the final product.  I would of preferred a different graphic approach, but I can play UO 2D, so it will not be a deal breaker for me...I do worry the classes will be bland and not complex feeling with 4 abilities tied to a weapon, and 4 misc. mixed abilities though....We will see I guess.

Do you really have read the forums? Because most  people with EQ1 nostalgia don't like EQN, because it is different.

But on the other side a lot of other people look forward to EQN, because it is different.

We will have finally a lot of stuff in EQN, which are drastically different than in other games.

- more sandbox than themepark

- more horizontal progression and a more horizontal world (not so much gated content) vs, the usual very deep vertical progression and the usual gated content(quest hubs, lvl based areas/zones linear going up to the next level area til max)

- World driven from NPC/Mob behavior(emergent AI), instead of the usual static world with Mobs/NPC just standing around on spawn locations

- prodecural generated world with hidden underground layers all over the world, instead of static predetermined level maps/zones, where you see and experience the very same as anyone else

- destructable/terraformable terrain(point above) with bulding(including free form building and terraforming maybe exclusive in same way to Landmark)

- (just my impression, but based on panels from SOE Live) more realistic and embedded(into the world) resource gathering, where resources are actually were you expect them, and will be gathered more realisticly

Those are just a few points, which will make EQN very different than any other MMO out there..

So no.. most people are not excited for EQN because of EQ nostalgia, but because it is finally a new approach to MMO gaming.

I can see why people are upset. If you follow a franchise like Call of Duty or Zelda you expect the game to follow a certain gameplay template. That's probably why they named the game EQ "Next" instead of EQ3.

Like the SOE devs I'm getting bored as well with the standard MMO template. They are taking a risk by bringing something new to the market but it maybe riskier to curn out another bland themepark we all played over and over on countless clones.

The EQ/WOW template is starting to show its age. The troupes have become parodies of themselves. Sure killing 10 rats in your first MMO seems new and exciting the first time but when you see the same design repeated over and over agian I get bored déjà vu.

It's not nostalgia.  Pretending it is only invalidates anything that follows.

It's a preference for certain game mechanics that later games have softened/removed and that resulted in a watering down of the feeling of being in another world.  More recent MMOs have felt more like single player RPGs in an online world rather than a true MMORPG.  The beauty of EQ1 was the community it evoked.  That's nto nostalgia.  It's appreciation for the things it did right.  Don't confuse the two.

With how much money they're putting into this, even a mild success is a failure.

SWTOR was very succesful by modern MMO standards, until you account for post release sub rates and the overall cost of development.

This happened to me as well.  I checked out EQ and UO about the same time, and the experiance managed to keep me away from MMOs  for years.   These games were pretty early in MMO design, and they did some things brilliantly, and others really poorly.   Sometimes it was the influence of mechanics of the time (computers, internet), sometimes the design team just struck out.

I have my fingers crossed for EQNext, as a new, worthwhile, possibly innovative MMO is always a cool thing.   I also hope the old-school types can eventually find some game they can enjoy.    Even if I think the mechanics are trying to replicate stone wheels once again.

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

Reading comprehension, look it up.

What EQN is doing is the equivalent of setting up a racing league on a dirt track using minivans and trying to call it Formula 2 racing, or something like that.

IT BEARS NO RESEMBLANCE

That has nothing to do with rose colored glasses.  Rose colored glasses would be me going, "Man, those super long spawn camps where i had to sit there for 3 days in a row to get 1 item were GREAT!".

Edit: I just realized people might have been interpreting me as typing E V E R Q U E S T as meaning EQ1, thats not what i mean.  I mean EverQuest as an IP.  Just thought id clarify.

Funny thing is if they did this there would be people saying how stupid it is to do stuff from 10-15 years ago and how there's nothing original about any of them.  People want what they can't have typically. Or perhaps we don't even know what we want until it falls into our lap.
