And how many people play Madden, or Call of Duty, or Halo, or GTA 5. Not the same type of game, not comparable IMO.

So I have easily deduced 2 things from your post....

A) You are a Teenager likely around 15 years of age thus you hear a lot of LoL in your peer group and circle of friends....  Well duh!  The game targets your age range.....

B) You and your friends have grown up after WoW's "Hay day if you will"  Kids must play the games that are trending also in the current market were so many games a Free to Play parents are not as likely to Pay a Subscription fee for you to play WoW...

So your idea that LoL is bigger then WoW is based off the perception of the environment around you.... how often do you hang out with Aged 27-47 year old gamers???

You likely don't, infact that idea may seem odd to you.  But there are more then teenagers that play video games!  I am 44 years old and I have been playing Games Since Mud's which is a Text based online game you likely have never heard of....

Point being the WoW audience is made of up people from Mid 20's thru to there 50's in age and you believe that there are more 15, 16, 17, 18 year old gamers then there are gamers between the ages of 25-50???  if you really think that is true then your really bad at math....

So to sum up your perception based idea is flawed !!!

Oh, the generalizations.

A)  You can see his age in his profile.  He's not a teenager though he's still young.  But geez, that's a really nasty stereotype you assumed from such little information in his post.

B)  I think that's probably accurate.  Most of the people I talk to, some older than me, some younger, but everyone in their mid 20s on up, if they played WoW they aren't currently playing.  This is just anecdotal.

Anyway, at work games are often a conversational topic.  I'm a programmer so I'm mostly around other programmers and some of the IT department.  Most are males 25+ years of age.  Some do play LoL.  I play LoL myself off and on depending on what other games I'm actively playing at the time.  As I said if WoW ever comes up in a conversation it's generally that someone was a big WoW player a few years ago, but quit at some point.  People still play LoL.  This is all anecdotal evidence, but considering you like to make really broad generalizations from small amounts of data, then go ahead and jump to conclusions with this.

Also it's "you're" not "your".  If you are going to insult someone's math skills maybe you should do it with correct grammar.  I don't see how your experience playing MUDs (which I also played) has anything to do with any of this conversation either.  As for the information you are arguing:  The average age of a WoW gamer is 28 years old according to http://www.nickyee.com/daedalus/archives/001365.php however that survey was also taken in June 2005.  Other studies tend to vary on what the average age of a gamer is, but it's always 30 or over (doing a quick search I see 30, 35, and 37) suggesting that WoW in June 2005 appealed to a slightly younger audience than what the "average" game would.  There have been no majority studies for the average age of a League of Legends Gamer so it's impossible to draw any conclusions beyond anecdotal evidence and your own biased stereotypes.

Raptr link because it's the cool new trend:

There is enough to make comparisons on.  Both are the most popular in their genre, both are multiplayer only (well, at least require an internet connection to play), both have millions playing monthly, and both have such dedicated players that have events dedicated specifically to the game as well as cosplay.  I think it's silly to say you can't compare things just because they belong to different genres.

Yes it is a generalization, I am quite sure that I said I deduced those things from reading his post,  this is an educated guess made from reading his post....

Is it a generalization absolutely great job for pointing out the obvious!

However, as to the topic of LoL vrs WoW its a silly comparision to make in the first place!  LoL is basically Warcraft 3 in an online universe sure its a fun game for an hour or two, but its not a game your going to sink multiple hours into daily for an extended period of time either....

Its free to play with a cash shop...

WoW on the other hand is a game in which you end up playing regulary for vast amounts of time and you pay a subscription.

To attempt to compare these two doesn't even make sense in the first place!

Of course we can compare.

According to xfire numbers, LoL also beat CoD2 & 4 in terms of usage. However, both of those CoDs beat WoW. And WoW beat other FPSes.

Did not really get it from the OP.

That more people apparently play LOL than WOW.

Outside of that, not much.

I think more people eat at McDonalds than Burger King too.

Granted, that's not really relevant, but then again, neither was the OP.

You don't think devs pay attention to the trends of online games, and that more will invest in MOBAs and less in MMORPGs now?

Tell that to the people who do in fact play it regularly for vast amount of times.  Tell that to people who invest irregular amounts of time to the LoL subculture attending events dedicated to the game, cosplaying, professional players, and players who regularly watch streams and tournaments of professional players.

I can compare two seemingly unrelated things as long as they have at least one common ground and WoW and LoL have several.  It's absolutely silly to say people can't make comparisons between the two.  In this case we are comparing "popularity" and "profit" the games make, which are definitely similar enough to make a comparison.  I think it's also fair to compare other popular titles here like CoD too.

Some games are more popular than others, more news at 11.

Also, whoever here thinks that MOBA's are anti-intellectual and easy, you should try playing Dota 2 sometime and get even remotely terrible at it before you say nonsense like that. These games are far more intellectually based than the average MMORPG because grinding doesn't give you anything.

Favorite MMO: Vanilla WoW
Currently playing: GW2, EVE
Excited for: Wildstar, maybe?

We live in a fantasy world, a world of illusion. The great task in life is to find reality.

MOBA games are something I just don't understand nor think are very fun.  Not a fan of any of them but to each their own I guess.

If your idea of a Sandbox is open FFA Full Loot PvP, full crafted world with minimal support for anything combat then your sandbox ideas are bad! Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

basicly known that LoL's community is much bigger then WoWs one.

Point is that most MOBA gamers dont even want to play MMO's or even never played. On the other side MMO gamers like to play some MOBA's sometimes (not all for sure).

while WOW is a typical Boston Consulting Matrix - Cashcow which gets milked till the end while LoL is keep getting bigger

Really its basically known is it???  Reference's please???  Where do you come by your numbers???

I guess World of Tanks is even better the LoL they have an ever larger player base!!!  And likely make a lot more money with there Cash shop then LoL....

But neither are the quality of game or make the amount of money that World of Warcraft makes....  And I pretty much hate WoW because its caused the last 10 years of games to be nothing but Theamparked instanced garbage!!!

Well when I go outside walking in big cities driving trains, I hear people talk about LoL and stuff - (LoL is a game which gets played even by non typical gamers). I actually never heard anyone talking about WoW the recent years. Sure on forums but forums are some type of an intern talk platform.

World of tanks has also a large community thats true, but also a much higher average rate of older people, while I was playing it felt like only 15 years olds or 50 years olds play it...

So I have easily deduced 2 things from your post....

thanks for the insult firstly, im not 15 but ye dont see your point insulting others while they just say their impressions on a topic. I dont realy care which game has more people since I dont even care was just saying my point of view. but good luck in defending ur point

Sorry but the popularity you claim is from about 90% of that player base that logs on to play once in a while for the heck of it....  They don't invest hours upon hours a day like an they would in an MMO....  that remaining 10% that plays it professionally is far from the population of WoW....  its like your attempting to say that Water is better then Soda because more people drink it.....  Well duh....  Now I ask which one is gets consumed in higher quantities???  Probally the Soda but how can that be if more people drink water???

I can say I started playing LoL in beta and still play today.  I play probably average to 4 or 5 games a week of it.  In all that time I have only spent $5 on my account.  I never spent another penny.  Now for WoW I have had 2 my own account and 1 for my wife for the better part of 5 years.  Though I am down to one personal account now so by far they been given hundreds more then I ever have or will give to LoL.  Plus in wow I have done some char transfers, race changes and faction changes.  I wouldn't be surprised if Blizzards gotten 1k from me it not more.  I am fine with it because I get hours and hours of entertainment out of it.  You can't compare them because I know most LoL players are like me maybe spent just a few dollars not hundreds.

Angry Birds has been downloaded over 1 billion times. It makes WoW and LoL numbers seem almost insignificant.

Does it have 1B active users every day? Don't get me wrong Angry Bird is impressive. I bet Blizz is going to make more casual games because of the trend.

Blizz is going into MOBA, and TCG not by accident. I bet they figure they should be going after the next big thing and slowly ramp down their MMO efforts.

It isn't the fact that they don't have things in common. It is more along the lines of the masses would rather play a great MOBA than waste their time on a dying MMO genre.

Good for them. The game itself is fun & engaging, and Riot deserves the rewards they're reaping for their hard work. It also has the side effect of attracting some of the most maladjusted little wastes of reproductive cells ever to live upon God's green earth. Make no mistake; I view this as a good thing, since it means there's a large amount of idiots I won't have to deal with in the online games I do play.

Between majority of the LoL & Starcraft 2 communities, I'd say that's 80% of the worst the internet has to offer nicely tied up screaming racial slurs & throwing feces at each other. The 20% or so left are hard enough to deal with as it is, if the aforementioned games ever lost popularity I'd probably just quit the internet forever.

Really. Just take a look at this childish, spew of anger and hate as an example: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/5992172

Oh...oops...that was you, wasn't it? My bad.

Farmville > LoL numbers wise....  I would hate to see Devs think everything needed to be a Farmville type game.

Think of something witty and pretend that I typed it in this spot :)

Just started playing LoL a couple of weeks ago and I can vouch (following some of the things that have been said in this string) that both my buddy, who hasn't been able to find an MMO that could pull him away from Tanks in the last two years or so, and my elusive wife, who is more addicted to web browser games these days than anything else, not only enjoyed it, but each dropped about 15 bucks on it before their second week.

At whatever price you all quoted earlier, what?  3 dollars or something?  That equals 6 times as much as they need to be making some major cash.

I also enjoy the game and agree with the one guy who said that getting good at it is not that hard (for some).  At the same time I can see where others just don't get the concept as well and also how if you get a group of people together that not only get the concept, but can play as a team, they could really be much better overall at this game than a lot of other people.

And I also agree with those that have talked about how nasty a lot of those people are right out of the gate.  All three of us, me on my first time in alone, and both my buddy and my wife on their first times in, and even beyond us all getting good at the game, there have been a lot of bossy, finger pointing, not even as good as you players in there trying to make just about anyone other than themselves feel bad and responsible for whatever goes wrong even though often times, such as in our case, you aren't even losing.  They just rage because they can't get champion kills or can't stay alive.

Of course, never wanting to feel too old to enjoy ourselves, we jumped right in and gave as good as we got in the beginning.  But as time went on it really just got more annoying than anything else to constantly have that one guy who thinks he is the king of LoL in every match telling you were you need to be and what you need to be doing.  I don't like it in my mmo's and I like it even less in a game where you can actually develop tactics that others may not have figured out yet.

All in all though, it is a pretty fun, pretty interesting game, and to disagree with one other person, the one that said it is not the kind of game that you sink multiple hours into, I beg to differ.  We just dropped most of Saturday on it and I could easily see myself, in my younger years, pulling a weekender on it and maybe even calling out on Monday.

And yeah, that means something to the MMORPG market because we are all MMORPG players who are, at the moment, not playing an MMORPG at all.

Still, I would not like to see the MMORPG genre go away.  Just get a little more interesting in the way that it is supposed to.

I will say this though, and if you knew me you would know that this is a big stretch.  If Marvel Online ran like this game, or rather if I understood it to run like this game (which I didn't when I tested it), and if it locked out same typed heroes the way this game locks out same typed champions, I would have stayed with it a lot longer than I did, even though I usually dislike that whole Diablo interface.

Who says they don't ?

If you break a modern mmo down it's not much more complex than click "crops" over and over for the reward. We just call them quests in mmos.
