The decline of the PC, hehe. I'll explain to you why the PC isn't going anywhere. My information comes from being a Web Developer. I see stats all the time for websites because I built them and have administrative access to anything on the sites. I have over 50 under my belt and access to over 130 hosted at our company.

What they are telling you is hype and wagging the dog's tail.

PC usage is not dead, mobile has not taken over anything but social media. Browser usage on websites for mobile is still under 5% on every site I've seen stats for. If you want a reference for that... we see more people visit websites using Internet Explorer 6 than mobile devices. The talk that mobile is "taking over" is not true at all. The sites that have high mobile usage are the social media sites but once they blast their stats around people not in this industry get confused and think that just because people are using mobile for Facebook, their site needs to be mobile based too. It's just a way to make people pay for site upgrades with marketing and fear that they aren't pleasing their customers. We do it all the time in the form of responsive design.

Mobile is used when you want mobility and it's a vanity purchase. The machines are not as powerful as a desktop PC and can't be for their size because enough hardware won't fit into them and the battery life can't keep up. The PC still has a place and it's with power users. It will never be replaced by mobile devices for real computing like I do. I render graphics on my PC while using email and have to have email open during work hours plus I'm on a remote server working on code and of course I have some sort of media playing as background sound along with having Office documents running that show me specifications for the website or PDFs outlining the wireframe and prototypes.

As others have mentioned, PCs don't need to be bought as often, software devs haven't caught up with programs for multi-core processors and you have to manually set your cores to each task so at this stage, desktop computing is finally outpacing software developers meaning that people don't upgrade as often as they used to. The hardware is also robust and not vanity based because it's behind closed doors. When you carry a mobile device someone can laugh at the age of it, when you use your Pentium 1 behind closed doors, no one can judge it unless you invite them into your house. Because some people 'wear'  their mobile devices like clothing and use it to impart a public image about themselves, they will upgrade the devices often before they are broken. This happens especially if they get devices under a contract and don't have the true cost of the device due at once, they pay for it over time or get it 'free' to sign a contract. The barrier of entry to get a current mobile device is smaller because the companies that sell them want you to upgrade each time they put out a new piece of hardware.

This is part of where the tail wagging comes into play that I mentioned in the first part. When you look at mobile purchasing be reminded of some things. Some schools have tried to adapt the tablets into classes thinking that they can remove textbooks. Those schools became bursts of buying that won't happen again now that they are finding out the tablets are getting broken, abused, and not going to have the staying power they hoped. A lot of developing countries have run wireless networks instead because of their infrastructure and mobile devices are growing in sales there because the people have been offered those smaller devices instead of desktops. That's a second place that growth is only in those sectors, not in the U.S. Another place of interest is Asia, in general their countries are early adopters of electronics and they have an extraordinarily large amount of people on mobile. Partly because knock offs are prevalent and again, for vanity and culture. Their school children have had mobile devices years before the western people picked up on it. Children are most prone to vanity purchasing because there's a part of their brain that hasn't developed fully that makes them care more about what other people think about them than anything else, that's why peer pressure works on them. Another factor is multi-device users. I carry multiple cell phones as does my boss and everyone in IT. You have personal devices and work devices. This over-reporting on the amount of people using mobile is because everyone in IT with any need to fix a server immediately has multiple devices. Back in the old days it was pagers, now it's mobile, no difference, still a device used for what it works best at - instant messaging or a phone call on the go. But, when that turns into an article for the web, it reads something like this... more mobile devices exist than there are heads on the planet. No, really, there is a reason for that, some people are technophiles. It does not mean that every person on the planet literally has a device, it also means that many people hoard devices because they are vanity based purchases.

It's a big topic and I think I may be going too deep now. I can tell you for certain that mobile is not killing the PC. I have to know this for my job and I've read sooooo many things saying what you read for years. The logic just doesn't back it up and when you factor in more than just sales and where the sales occur and why, you get a better picture of things. Knowing the whole story doesn't make for a compelling blog article though, people are much faster to jump on what they can scare you with for ratings or shock you with. If you see another "The PC is dead" article, be assured, it's only titled that way to get you to click. If the article you are reading doesn't take into account things I mentioned, for certain they aren't covering even 1/2 the angles. Especially watch out for sales by the country they occur in.

One of two things should have happened to tip the scales in either direction. And neither have happened yet for whatever reason although the opportunity hasa been there for decades now. Either a keyboard and mouse becomes universally accepted in the living room, or a gamepad becomes universally accepted at the desktop.

So for now, its two viable markets and I have no idea if/when one of the things I said will happen. If it hasnt happened yet, I dont see it happening any time soon.

Sales of PCs for gaming haven't slowed down. If anything they've picked up. If you consider this, and also that PCs really can be fine, especially if the user upgrades the video card or even the processor, it doesn't seem like new PC sales are going to have an impact on MMORPGs for some time to come.

It does seem likely that developers are going to look for other markets though. If a market isn't expanding, then it's not doing it's job. MMOs and MMORPGs on consoles, phones and tablets is a thing that's going to happen, because the PC market isn't going to expand. It can't. It's already reached the saturation point.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

If the traditional desktop PC dies off you will see the death of MMOs as we know them today. MMos are designed around the keyboard and the mouse which makes it possible to have things like 30 skills quickly accessible without slowing down gameplay. One of the few genres that even the gamepad cannot handle let alone the touchscreen.

If/when touchscreens become the norm and nobody uses keyboards again all we're going to have is a lot of swipe to cut the rope or swipe to jump type of games.

Is not so much the computing power that will hurt gaming rather than the input method.

This craziness comes up every few years.  Actually, it usually comes around a new generation of consoles to be honest.  PCs are not dying.  Not even close.  In fact, I find it funny that the computer I am typing this out on right now smokes the PS4 and XBone in capability or comes pretty damn close.

I have been around PC games long enough to know that every time someone declares that the bottom if falling out from under the PC market, they are wrong.

its all moot anyway. sooner or later, cloud gaming/computing will be truly viable in any form and we will just have screens in our house.

Silly OP..

'New' PC sales have declined - but that's hardly a death throw - have you any idea how many PC's and Macs (let alone iOS and Android) there are globally? lets put it this way.. take all the sales of every console ever, times it by 1000 and you still wont be even close.

PC's components are upgradable and if you are a gamer, you will get into upgrading rather than buying a whole new unit every x years.

I remember some people writing off the PC as a gaming machine in around 1989 - and then the 486 and Creative Soundcards came about, and again in the early 00s when 'next gen' consoles came out (Xbox and PS2).

It didn't happen then, its not happening now - and frankly to think that the new consoles are going to fly off the shelves any better is a fanciful notion as most western economies are still suffering from recessionary affects - which by the way is more the reason why 'new' PC sales have suffered - that and windows 8 has kind of bombed.

With things like Steambox and Steam controllers on the horizon, with Oculus Rift and crap loads of innovative stuff coming on the horizon, the likely victims will be the consoles over the next 5 years.

Even though worldwide PC sales have declined every quarter since early 2012, you do have to see these things in context though. Only an estimated 80M units were shipped last quarter.

Only... 80... million...

Clearly, PC's are about to vanish from the scene. Not.

However, as far as MMO's are concerned, I suspect it will be the push by publishers and developers toward consoles and tablets that will most strongly affect the games as we know them today.

This push will be to access a wider potential playerbase, but broadening the scope of the platforms they're targeting will inevitably mean that the games must be playable on a tablet. The lowest common denominator always wins out in the end...

I find funny how you guys notice pc are selling less but don't think maybe, just maybe the market have enough PCs around to last and the upgrades lately are not as huge like it was years before, before in less tehn a year we would ahve enough new things to double or even triple the PC power, now the price for teh upgrade is not that much anymore, computer need a new archteture to keep growing and till they find a way for it it will not sell much more because the computer we have now can hold well anything they make

FOR HONOR, FOR FREEDOM.... and for some money.

Will this switch effect MMO gamers? Is buying a gaming PC going to become difficult

Do you have any figures to back this assumption up? Or is it a dream or wish that this is true? My PC can outperform any other gaming device on the market right now.

I just built a new computer. Dell, HP, and Alienware did not show any sales from my purchases. There are lots of computer part sellers that did, though :)

As Phry pointed out, PCs are modular. Want to upgrade? Easily done. Not so with phones, consoles, or tablets.

Hey if more people are building their own instead of buying premade ones more power to them. No longer having to call customer service for basic info that should be on the parts listing but they give some annoying simple codes instead. I swear from their marketing companies like Dell HP and Alienware must think people should buy a whole new computer every year.

Gamers would much rather use that money buying games to play and I'm sure game makers would like that as well.

It sure won't. The people not buying PCs are people that never wanted them in the first place. It might actually improve games by not having them geared toward casual gamers. Let those tools play brainless crap on their iPads and consoles, and leave real gaming to the PC owners.

When a Kender says "oops!"; its already too late.

Here is the fundamental problem:  We're reaching the limit on what we can do with the "old" game design technology.  Most PCs, even the crappy HP or Dell ones, can run 90% of the games on the market.  If your system can run a game that you want to play, why upgrade?  So are PCs declining.  Perhaps, but once games start becoming more system intensive, you'll see an increase in sales and/or personalized systems (like mine).

I built my PC for Warhammer, and went a little overkill.  To this day, it can still play 99% of the games on the market on max graphics.

PC sales decline is there. No one can deny that. But that does not tell the story of pc gaming.

Why? Because it is installed base, not yearly sales that matters.

PCs are in most homes in the US. If the sales slow down, it only means people take longer to upgrade, and not fewer people who have PCs.

And not all games need the top of the line PC to play.

I do know people that used to play MMOs on the PC that no longer do so.....Like many have mentioned they have moved to smart phones or tablets...None of these people were hardcore gamers but were still part of the numbers......Like others have said, these other formats dont really replace the PC but offer a more convenient way of casual gaming that definitely appeals to some like Angry Birds dont appeal to me one iota and Im sure many other PC gamers feel the same way.

i move some of my gaming to tablet/phones too.

There are lots of bite-size & fun RPgs like Shadowruns Return, and Warhammer Quests. And tablets/phones are a lot more convenient.

PCs are becoming a mature industry.   There are no longer compelling reasons to build faster computers, so the efficiency gains are going into producing cheaper and more reliable PCs.  If anything, MMOs with their long lives should be well-poised to capitalize on a stable base of long-lived machines.

A more interesting question might be whether the rise of MMOs led to a decline in PCs?  Games have always been a driving forcing in gettting early adopters for bleeding-edge tech. With MMOs being less demanding of hardware and more demanding of free time, has this reduced the market of people seeking the latest and greatest PC?

Nah. MMOs can actually be quite demanding, especially when there are a lot of people on screen.

The reason for the decline of PC is because people don't need a big box and all those cables just to access facebook. Before they had no choice but to use a desktop. Then came the laptop and then came the phone and tablet.

If anything I think it will improve them.

If it takes all the must have everything now, must play every new game type of people and creates a market for them on phones and tablets then it will leave the more traditional mmo players to have a market of their own.

I don't think either type of person is bad. I just think they're bad to try and have together in one game.
