To busy playing GW2 to post much around here... *shrug*

10/11/13 12:14:55 PM#21

With an investment like that, can you really blame them for trying to make good on what is probably their biggest mistake ever? They should never have tried to make an MMO out of what they had. They saw WoW and thought "OMG look at the amount of money they're making of subscriptions with crappy graphics like that! We'll just make a SW version of that game and everyone will start paying us subscription money! We'll make a fortune!".

Alas they didn't (and probably still don't) really have a clue what MMO's are about. They should have stuck to doing what they are/were good at.

Definetly.

I played Wing Commander many years ago, and I liked it a lot.

Star Citizens could be just as good.

SWTOR deserve to rot in hell.............. with EA if possible

how can you insult someone who had his game taken away?

you don't understand how much work we in the swg community put into swg only to have it robbed from us.

People have been bashing TOR into the ground for YEARS!  I'm not really sure what this thread is adding.

To be honest, you played a video game based on an IP. The video game was not making enough money to satisfy the holder of that IP. The game was shutdown because that IP holder (Lucas) and the producer (SOE) agreed to do so. The decision was "mutual". You were not "robbed".  You never "owned" anything. You simply were a "user" of software that you enjoyed.

Btw, communities / guilds survive game switches all of the time. My brother in law has been playing with the same group since EQ1 days (through WoW - AoC - SWToR).  They will most likely migrate to ESO next year. The bond is between people in the community not in the game.

I wonder much more why you and others like you bother so much with game that are obviously not playing and have obviously not played?

Is there a video game that is NOT designed to make as much money as fast as possible?  Even indie games are designed to make money as fast as possible.

Games are absolutely intended to make money as bobdole1979 says.

However I think that SWTOR was intended to make an awful lot of money - and not as much money fast as possible. Which is why they went with a monthly subscription model. Who knows what it would have been like with no sub but paid for DLC - think B3 etc.

yup..look at the timing

when did they start developing this game? when they saw wows Cash flow

sadly, they used the wrong people, and the wrong tools for the job

and its difficult to get a good product, when you do that

But you are right in something, they are making a lot of money with the cartel market, i know people spending more than $1000 in cartel packs just to get a mount, a special armor or item, but is all cosmetic stuff that you can get with ingame credits, and all that money is helping them to make new content and stay on track with the 8 weeks content update plan. I mean we got the 2.4 updatea a few weeks ago, and the 2.5 with space update in 8 weeks or so.

So new content every 3 to 4 months? Nothing impressive, some actual games give content every two weeks... for free.

The content you are talking about is temporary.  It lasts for two weeks, then is yanked away.  It's a scam and the folks playing that game are buying it hook, line, and sinker.

Then again, you only paid for the box, so you couldn't be expected to get long-lasting, permanent changes to the game world.

We also complained the space part of the game was a joke.    We told them the game was not that fun to play.    Management did not care. They were going live after only 2 weeks of beta testing.  Even if the game was a mess they knew it would bring in large amounts of money because it is Star Wars.   When the game started failing they went to free to play so they could wring out a little more money from the players. I would not be surprised if a sequal to SWG was already being planned so they can kill SWTOR and make even more money. Only this time they will have Pledge Packages so they can get the players money before they have to develope any content!!

Yes, and even with snail pace of 8+ weeks you get content like Oricon *bangs head against the wall*

Nah, BW/EA really believed they will knock out WoW.

Only after SWTOR failed (huge population dropoffl/ayoffs/merges/extended trial aka F2P where they even monetize - UI) it started to slowly shift to what you say.

But then, iisnt Hickman still in charge of SWTOR? He was for WHO and look how that ended lol

Uhh 2011 called they want their rage post back

Ya, mostly this. It's kind of hard to get all up in arms about a horse that's so dead the flies aren't even buzzing around it any longer.

For every large, complex problem, there is a simple, clear solution that also happens to be absolutely wrong.

The loyal Star Wars community deserved a better mmo than this pig, especially after the SWG closure debacle . I don't know if Bio/Ea have the brains to feel shame, but they should be ashamed of this travesty. It further proves that industry awards mean absolutely nothing.  On the other hand, there is always the hope of another grand SW title that is an actual MMORPG along the vein of Star Wars Galaxies.

SWG closure was not a debacle it was closure of a poorly performing video game.  You guys keep your hope and dream together for another few years while a lot of people play and enjoy SWTOR.  Its a travesty that over two years in now people are still crying about SWTOR and crying that their little preshish swg CLOSED.

SWG was great, thats why even a  few months before the end, it was a ghost town in pretty much eveysingle server of the game.  Now is gone and people are talking about SWG as something that it never was.  you may not like SWTOR, but there is a lot of people and SW fans who love and enjoy the game everyday, live with it.

Shall I take it , shall i take it ? O okay then "hook line and sinker". So yeah I think he might have just basically necroed a 3 and a half week old thread to show his distain for a certain company. Who would make a SW MMO , Weeeellll not SOE that's for sure and do they own te right to the name god i hope not, they ruined SWG and then now charging a lot of money for EGNL alpha and a bit for beta if you so wish , is terrible. I for one am glad SWTOR came out when it did and was a sub game and the hybrid is okay.

Ill stop but add I wouldn't pay $200 for Yoda's handprints with a DVD of Leia snorting **** off of ... yeah you get the picture with my MMORPG that's for sure , not off Sony or off anyone. Test my lighsaber for $100 if you will ( hush it's not a finished one , don't tell anyone ) *blows up in your face*.

Cheers,

BadOrb.

PSO 4 years , EQOA 4 months , PSU 7 years , SWTOR launch ongoing.

You say a lot of people enjoy playing SWTOR? A lot of people enjoy sniffing glue as well; both the glue and SWTOR are on a similar level -- which is more deleterious to your mental state I will leave to your imagination.

SWG had a grand 8+ year run and represented one of the most complex mmorpgs to date. I am not going to enter into the Lucasarts effect on the mmo.
