No way! I dont pay $15 for WOW. Sub is just a money grab. Seems I paid $50 for Guild Wars 2 and get bi weekly new content with no sub. I believe new games should follow that format. Free trial to try game, then $50-$60 to purchase game, no sub! Think back on WOW, over 10 years of making over 1 billion dollars per year just on subs but that cant afford free content. Give me a break!

I've become dependent upon spell check. My apologies for stupid grammatical errors.

I've been thinking about this for awhile, and I think there are a couple of flaws with the premise of a "Premium" MMORPG.

* The idea that paying more would lead to a better experience. It seems more likely that developers would only make 'better' games when the consumers get tired of the games as they are and stop buying them.

* The idea that a higher barrier to entry would draw in better behaved players. If this were true, then WoW's players would be better behaved than current SWToR players or current Rift players. This is not the case. The style of the game, the game's allowed mechanics and the stance the developer takes on player behavior are what has an impact on behavior, not how much money the game charges for entry.

* In order for the premise to work, the game would have to make more money overall than other, less priced games. The price itself wouldn't necessarily be a deterrent, but the game's content, setting and mechanics would play a large role in how many people actually play the game. If everything didn't come together just right, the game would just go through the same cycle of getting a bunch of players at the start, plateauing and then losing players over time.

For every large, complex problem, there is a simple, clear solution that also happens to be absolutely wrong.

Charging $20-25 wouldn't fix the issues that plague MMORPG's.  If anything, they'd just have less subscribers that are paying more money and the end result would be the same as charging less.  I wouldn't pay that much for a subscription MMORPG and I don't believe simply raising prices is a magical solution either.

Yes

Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!

By "premium" I mean:

Polished game from day one

Fully developed game world with extensive lore

Regular monthly content updates (sizeable)

Plentiful GM interaction including GM run events in game

I am DrCokePepsi, most likely known as the psycho who screams P2P whenever I get the chance, even mid conversation during a sports discussion. But I'm not going to lie, unless this game is the epitome of perfection in a vast full-scale planet/universe with dynamic weather, the ability to do literally anything that you want in-game or be able to manipulate any object in countless ways, unless it is just so damn perfect it has absolutely no competition, that's an absurd amount to me.

So not to say, obviously, if it's worth it it's worth it, i won't adamantly hold on to my dollar, but right now there is nothing, realistically, that could come close to feasibly asking for that price. I'm pretty sure a game that could justify that amount wouldn't even be able to be developed in the first place due to the initial funds it would cost to take off.

Now I may have slightly overreacted, personally lending out a few bucks for an experience worth it is absolutely fine, but i could nearly guarantee, especially with all the F2P whiners on the forums these days, that a game like that would collapse faster that a lead weight on a piece of balsa wood.

Again, this game would have to be astonishing, getting the $15 bucks a month alone from people nowadays is hard enough.

Can you imagine how much that kind of money can do for a game?

  • Instead of firing the staff post release you keep them on staff to release content at an insane pace
  • Create and/or license top notch tools for user generated content
  • Ample customer service
  • In game "Dungeon Masters" paid as professionals to drive server stories and quest
  • Huge E-Sport prizes
  • Out of game tools like apps or ARGs
I can't even imagine what else can go into the game with such a massive monthly budget, any little thing the fans want they can add in just because they would have the cash to burn lol.

Wow peaked at nearly a billion dollars in annual revenue, and did nothing like that.  For profit businesses will keep their profits as high as possible.

That's is because Blizzard ruined the genra, while putting very little back into their game...  so much so, that WoW clones popped up to cash in on the cheap experience, with big profits.

Not too surprising to me.  The MMORPG.com community is a very small subset of the general MMORPG players.   We're an opinionated fraction of the minority of gamers packed with burning embers of hot buttons pushed way too long.  A good puff of wind will reignite almost any fire.

A premium game as I interpret the OP, would have a much higher number of GMs to handle in-game problems and run in-game events.  If a company wants to control these agents, they would need to pay them, thus incurring a significant increase in on-going operational costs.  In this particular case, that would be the major contribution of this premium service, and also the largest probable cost.

I've asked the 'how much would you spend' question several times in threads similar to these.   It never fails to draw one or two responses of 'Sure, I would pay X'.  But the real question here isn't how much an individual would pay (although we would all have to answer that question eventually), but will the MMORPG market support niche products when priced with typical niche market markups?   Premium service, custom rule-sets catering to tiny markets (PvP, RP) or other offerings.   Generally, I don't think that any company that intends to make money on their efforts will consider these markets; there simply aren't enough customers.   So, premium and niche markets will be the domain of the indie manufacturer, not the AAA companies, in my opinion.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

No. In fact, i won't pay a cent for a MMORPG. There are fun enough free alternatives. I highly doubt if there will be one warranting a premium price.

Plus, i prefer to play many games, not being locked into one.

I haven't found an mmo i want to play for 15$ a month.  Nor have I found one that I want to play for free either.  So the idea of spending extra has little appeal.

I prefer f2p not gonna lie.   It lets me see what's up for no upfront costs

with that being said. I am not against an exclusive game, but that shit better be the mutha f@@kin best game eever to justify its expense. I really don't think any company's currently have it in them to make (currently).

I would pay that sort of money for the right mmo, though I can't think of one out at the moment that I would be willing to pay that much for, never say never though a lot of mmos coming so one of them might be worth that much a month.

OP your pole is a little too vague.

I have no problem shelling out that much for a subscription, but the game would have to literally "Blow  Me Away"

I expect something for that money and GM's, Forum Mods and a billing center just doesn't cut it.

I personally don't see that assurance anywhere.   The player base is too fickle.

Chris Roberts has gotten almost $20M already from people hungry for a return to the space opera genre.  I think it's crazy but in today's environment delevopers can actually sell their game before they even start to build it!

Not sure how you meant the word crazy; I personally find it is astonishing on how influential, inspirational and supportive the gaming community can be where you give it a choice. It is quite evidently in my eyes that the gap that was attempted to be filled by Star Wars: The old republic only ended up creating a bigger one, leaving a bittersweet taste (Five Lessons to be learned, http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2012/08/01/five-lessons-learned-as-swtor-surrenders/ & Star Wars is not truly free, http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2012/11/21/star-wars-the-old-republic-goes-free-to-play-but-not-too-free/ (definitely see the chart; I can guarantee you will laugh your beep off).

Space opera will always be the most intriguing genre for mmorpgs. Flying, being in space, exploring space, ect will always have this evolutionary interest from us. I remember the first time I tried EVE Online, I was able to just chill for a couple of hours with space-oriented music and just do nothing apart from flying. Space-related projects such as the title mentioned or future ones will always bring feelings and experience that differ from other mmorpg genres. Hell even just playing Mass Effect II and dancing in a space-night-club was spectacular.

Now to be more related to your thread, I answered yes. However, I am extremely skeptical because that premium service that has been mentioned through out the entire thread was given in the gold era of mmorpgs. Now it is expected for any type of business model because now the argument is that the Average Joe has got choices and variety. So for a game to have that sub-price it would have to do more than the service current mmorpgs offer.Much, much more.

Sure, but that's based on my personal entertainment budget and priorties. For most products I intend to use alot, I generaly prefer to spend a bit more IF it gives me better quality. However, the quality has to ACTUALY be there in comparison....I'm not going to spend more just for a label that delivers no more quality that I can get elsewhere.

Absolutely I would, if it's a highly polished game that I really enjoy with regular content updates, then I would definitely pay more.

Heck, I already pay 45 USD a month to play EVE, so 25 USD aint all that much for a game that's really exceptional.

These are not Premium, they should be standard for a $15/mth game.

Don't get me started on Chris Roberts.  He's selling a pipe dream with all the skill of a Hollywood huckster.  It's always easier to sell a vague image of something.  By its ambiguous nature it conforms to every individual's desires.  His timing was impeccable, but I expect that many of his backers will be sorely disappointed.

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
