I still believe that Aion is the most complete PvPvE game out there. I tried branching out to other mmorpgs out there but that game for me is far too good and only one game will make me finally leave it after three-four years of playing it; Blade & Soul. It is one of those games where it has completed me as a player and showed me everything there is to know (each gamer holds of course a different mmorpg for that) and I just can't let it go until the other game I mentioned comes.

This isn't an answer.

An answer would be what you consider to be fun, that is why I listed different things (along with hoping people would mention ones I didn't think of).

To some people, running Raids over and over is fun, to others it is not.

To some people PvP is fun, to others it is not.

Fun is not an answer because fun is the question. What is it that you find fun which in turns keeps you playing an MMO.

I expanded my thoughts in another post. But here goes. You can enjoy combat/raids/PvP in one MMO and hate it in another so you cannot define a single element that keeps you playing because it changes from game to game, so your question doesn't really make sense. Its the reason for the old game having an X-factor and that factor is undefinable or variable from gamer to gamer, why do I like playing Diablo 3 and not Path Of Exile they are basically the same game, an ARPG so I should, by your reasoning, love both because you kill things for loot. Now if you get into the nitty gritty of the difference in mechanics D3 is smooth combat, Path of Exile is clunky combat then you have a discussion. The only constant in all this though is FUN!

It is similar to real life, where there is often a race, to have better stuff than your neightbour, just to feel better. Or the race at the gym, where some people after gaining good body start to go out more into public to show off their hard work. It is the same in game, people want to be seen after getting that new armor, and the bigger audience, the better. They don't feel good about themselves, when they achieved something nice in a wasteland, where there is no one to impress.

These type of people really bother me because all it means is that they are sitting around at home without a job for 12 hours and nothing better to do.  Personally, once I get to max level I try to have a character concept for my toons in my head and then acquire items that I think will fit that concept, not necessarily the best items in the game.  Showing off an interestingly customized and unique character is much cooler to me than showing off a maxxed out character.

Hope that, if I do find them, they are not assholes.

And finally hope that after all of that is said and done, that there might actually be some hidden, higher level to it all.  You know, like having your character become a permanent part of the game lore or something.

Isn't that what keeps us all playing? ;)

No. Definitely not for me. I don't "find" people in games, and certainly do not want to depend on anyone for my fun.

I have found most of things listed by the OP fun at one time or another in MMO's so a variety of things have kept me playing. Usually when I start to log in and stare at the screen for a while and log out I know it's time to move on.

The game I liked the most out of the dozen or so MMOs I've played was City of Heroes.  The choice of roles available in the game was quite variable, and I could set up a new alt in minutes to assist a team in giving them something they may have been lacking for great overall team performance.

The costume creator was 2nd to none, with many costuming / power effect options still not available in many of the current games (yeah, Champs Online and DCUO, I'm looking at you).

I don't usually PvP much, but I've enjoyed the arranged Arena matches I've run with friends just to test a build out against an intelligent opponent, and have held my own in ambushes directed against me in the PvP zones as well... Just not my cup of tea, though.

The Community in CoH/V was 2nd to none as well.  When someone (new or familiar to the game) had a question, chances were, that within a minute, they'd get at least one (and usually multiple) civilized responses which gave them the info they needed, or pointed them to resources where they could read up on the more complex functions of the game.  I won't go into the typical response I see in the other games I've tried out.

Your opinion may vary, and more power to you.  I'm just trying to enjoy the games I've found online, and I wish you all the same.

Not really helpful. What is fun to you?

I see many throwing the word around without ever describing what they consider fun to be.

Maybe this is a language problem but I wouldnt use fun to describe most of the activities I enjoy. Exciting, challenging, interesting, terrifying, and indeed fun are just some of the words I could use to describe some of the stuff I enjoy doing. But Im not really naming any activity.

So... Fun.. what do you mean?... Laughter and merriment? Or is it more inclusive.

Anyway, what keeps me playing is; a continually developing conflict and friends (RL or ingame).

I can get my jollies in so many ways, so, what I mentioned is the only thing that makes MMOs worthwhile for me.

That's because it's not something that can be easily described.  It's not really the action but the implementation in-game.  If the game is continually exciting and makes you want to go back to the game, it's fun.  Otherwise it's not.  The exact same game element may be great in one  game and boring in another.  It depends on how they do it.

Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, Aion, Allods, lots more

I love to level. I love the feeling of progression. The sense of getting something done and moving forward.

That and really sweet graphics.

If I can talk RL friends into trying something other than WoW, that's always a bonus.

Vanity keeps me playing...Appeal to my need to make my character blind new players with dazzeling bling and glitz, glowy haze just pouring off of me so thick they can gain experience from it. Even awesome enough stuff that experienced players are mad jelly because "they were gana get that...eventually"...make me say every time I turn around "damn I look good!" and I will keep playing your game and shoving my cash in your mouth. because, I do so love when people hate on me because I look better then them in a game.

Unfortunately, not much in MMOs keeps me playing after I hit max level and finish the storyline.  Other than Second Life, I've found very few MMOs that I've played over a couple of months since SWG.  Not so much that the "new" wears off as I don't care for "end game" content.  If I'm going to run the same dungeons over and over and over again, I need a reason for doing it.  Since most MMOs these days are largely single player content, I've really made no connections to any of the other players that would cause me to stay for them.  I'm not that interested in PvP.

What would keep me playing an MMO?

-- community/connection with players

-- something to do after my character is fully developed and a reason for doing it

-- basically what a good sandbox would do because when you go to a themepark once the ride is over it is over, if the ride was fun the person has to decide whether or not they want to go on the same ride again

And what things would you like to do when you're done leveling and are done gearing up? I guess that is the big question.

Yes but you are asking what keeps you playing and its variable from game to game, one attribute in one game can be better than another but if you have fun with one rather than the other why should you have to break down why you are not having fun? unless you are a dev or a budding developer its irrelevant, you play the game that's fun to you and ignore the other one.

This is the reason many on here are permanently miserable they anaylise to nth degree playing armchair developers and have forgotten the purpose of playing a game..... FUN! so your reasoning is backwards I play games I have fun in and leave the games that I find not fun, devs then can use metrics to see which elements and games people find fun and make more of those games, why should I be wasting my mental energy for them unpaid unless its for my personal enjoyment? This is the source of the malaise imo of many posters on MMORPG.com and their perpetual doom and gloom about the genre.

I'm sounding like Nariusseldon but much of what he preachers is true.

And the reason can also vary from person to person. LFD adds to the fun for me. It probably does not for some here.

And people may not have the time nor the inclination to describe ALL the reasons of why a game is fun for them. For example, i like D3 .. and i can talk about the combat, the experimentation of builds, and polish and so on ...

But am i going to go to the last detailed reason like .. oh i really like how the Skorn look? Probably not.

I think that's the only real answer, people play for fun. I myself find a challenge fun. A rare thing to find a mmorpg that takes any skill to play these days.

As for people not having the time nor inclination to describe what they mean... Well they dont have to post if it takes up too much of their time.. And when they post anyway just to state the obvious, but dont bother giving even one example of something they have enjoyed in a game, then why bother posting at all?

We all know that there has to be something we enjoy in a game, for us to sit down repeatedly and play it. But if we cannot give an example like you just did with D3 and the combat and so on, then how can we have any meaningful discussion?

Another example of why I kept playing some games, is how satifying it can be to land a blow in some games. To pull off a combo and beat another player. To sneak around for ages and waiting for that perfect moment when someone gets too brave and they are yours.

I also love figuring out how to do stuff that Im not intended to be able to do. Thats why I get annoyed over modern games that have mob tethering and arbitrary rules to ensure that everyone has the exact same experience every time.

I am not disagreeing with you. I do post reasons and sometimes very detailed reasoning of my preference.

However, deciding what to post, to some extent, is also a preference. I don't see why it is a problem if someone just want to state "i love XXX" without posting any reasons. That probably is a waste of time for me (or you) to respond ... but we don't have to.
