I may be dense when it comes to this word... But im picturing pie throwing and tickle fights, when you say FUN combat..

There is more than one kind of fun combat. Pie throwing and tickle fights may be (to you?) as fun as stealth, or magic mechanics.

As with the tabletop AD&D that got me roleplaying, it has always been the progression of the characters and their class. Next it's the dynamics with other players when you do a dungeon. raids are too much for me, too chaotic. Even nowadays, after 30+ years of RPG's, single and MMO, it's the progression that makes me play a game. Love the different class and craft-progression, the story behind it, the exploration of the different regions.

Endgame means nothing to me, imho it's for the ADHD kids who want to progress as fast as possible to levelcap, and when they raid and have "awesome" gear go stand in the centre of a main city and show off how awesome they are. Those people ruin the whole experience of a MMORPG in my opinion. I acknowledge the fact that there is a place in the game for them, but they have a too loud of a voice when it comes to criticising a game.

I would say the combat, but everything that goes with the combat as well.

And generally a gear grind makes all the extras more important as well, since for pvp, gear grinds are a waste of time, and the worst carrot on a stick for progression in a competitive arena which gets redone for the next expansion or even less.

In fact, the games that MMORPGs should learn from are Diablo 1,2 and 3. Make the combat fun, and people will play the game for hundred of hours.

Would you find combat fun if there were no better rewards or more character advancement to be gained from killing things?

So what keeps you playing?

Is it mastering a raid?

hunting out the perfect gear?

playing PvP either in world or battlegrounds?

customizing out  your character?

rolling alts?

the community/guild?

I'm curious to hear what aspects of an MMO are what keep people playing for the long haul after that new car scent has worn off.

Edit: Fun is not an answer as what will keep you playing is inevitably what you find fun to do. So if you can only see it that way then change the question to "What keeps an MMO fun after the long haul and after that new car scent has worn off?"

- Rolling alts: I want to play various classes, races and start in different zones/cities.

- The community/guild: I have a few MMOs longer than I would have otherwise due to the community and/or guild I was in.

- The number of varying activities to do other than fighting: Fighting is just one aspect of MMORPGs. The more variety, the longer I find myself logging in.

Because of this, doing everything on one character will have me quitting much sooner than not having this ability. Having one or maybe a handfull of starting areas will significantly cut down on the longevity for me, also.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

World of Warcraft - it is in my opinion the only game worth playing. It has everything including fun. I have tried a dozen other mmorpgs and they just can't stack up to Wow. I often feel all other mmorpgs are just feeding off the former wow players or playeds that want a break from wow. The wow parasites if you will, they keep the genre around, otherwise the genre could just be called World of Warcraft.

I agree. The real question is... Fun for whom? Diablo 1, 2, and 3 is not my idea of fun combat.

It's approximately that breakdown.

The asterisk by "mastering a raid" just refers to there being a sufficient amount for group/raid challenges.  I stick around mostly because of my guild, but my guild wouldn't be around if there was no challenging content for us to partake in.   A guild in a game where there are no long or short term goals is just a chat room.

I am, of course, speaking for myself. D1, 2 and 3 are very fun combat for me. I assume since many play those games for a long time, it applies to them too.

Obviously nothing applies to everyone.

"Fun" is the word of the month as you can see. It wasn't before, but it just takes one person to say something like this, and then bunch of other sheeps will go fun? fun! fuuuun! fuuuuuun! Arguments are no longer neccesary, because every discussion about any game can be killed by a simple "why? because I just like it, it is my taste, so whatever".

In my case I need to have a long term objective, that I desire to achieve.

When I get everything I wanted in the game in terms of character progression, I lose all interest. I always had this separation between genres. I played racing games, multiplayer fps's, and platformers to have "fun", and I played strategy games and rpg's for the feel of achievement.

This all "I just wanna have fun" mentality lately reminds me of crazy teenangers doing crack.

Would you find combat fun if there were no better rewards or more character advancement to be gained from killing things?

I first liked the uo combat of mage and having a lot of spells key bound to my keyboard. It was the first time having so many spells at my finger tips that a character like a mage felt like an extension of myself. The animations were simple as well.

Then i played some fps games like counter strike. No reward, but i enjoyed the twitch combat, and aiming.

the most recent game that i enjoyed combat in was swtor, and dota2. In swtor the combat feels iconic to the classes, but the class balance depending on spec is still frustrating to deal with. Same as dota2 the heroes are clearly not balanced for each other, but the combat is still fun and the challenge is to also overcome the disadvantage with strats and items.

In an mmo, i would like to see spell casters have a lot of spells. And other classes, range and melee, have aim abilities. I think what conan was trying to do was a good idea, but i never really tried it because my pc was junk at the time and had other priorities as well. Maybe the combo which becomes a macro, was not the best idea but having a combo system that depends in the situation makes the combat interesting. I tried vanguard, i liked the build up to special attack, and in gw2 supposed fire adding fire to the arrows that fly over them is a nice idea of using the environment.

there are a lot of good ideas, but from my exp of what i enjoyed for spell casters is that they have a lot of abilities, and other melee or ranged classes have aim abilities. Maybe warhammer 40k will have what i am interested in, if ping is not an issue.

Nothing at the moment.

Im in search of that mmo wich is for me. and the current mo's are all the same. they may have tons of features and stuff the hobbling from questhub to questhub is something wich annoys the crap out of me the moment i start a character. Quests arnt bad but a MMO should have very few, also reaching level cap within a month is something i don't agree with really.

For me MMO's of today are really shallow.

If i want competition il play a FPS (BF3 for example)

For combat il play any hack and slash (we have a lack of those atm)

There are alot of SP games wich i play for pure entertainment. The last of us, Tomb raider, Assasins creed series, halo etc etc all really good. the ocasional RPG here and there.

What i want from an MMO what an MMO can deliver is a diffrent experience from all those games. Something wich defnies the Genre. But right now MMO's arnt made that way they are just games. no longer worlds wich swallow u up.

Thats why i cannot find an MMO to play. Because the genre deteriorated to Something it should not be. A mere Game.

If it's a popular game, I have a strong theory that people stick around for the company.

I witnessed the strangest thing leaving one game - people crying after hearing the news and saying you'll be back, everyone comes back. Those who said I would go back were wrong. Seems to them it was more special than I had imagined. Yes, it was WOW, you guessed? Ask yourself how many people were there because everyone else was there back in the day. The number one reason people wouldn't play a game was always  - but no one plays that. It was like asking someone to change their religion lol

Some people (many people) need so much for someone to be around that they will stick around popular games just for that alone. They don't care about the game really, it's just a vehicle to have the conversations. I think they out themselves when they stop talking about / analyzing the game instead asking about you and your life more often. There's nothing wrong with online friendships but they seem to lose perspective of why we "login" to the game. It's to play the game for some of us or was for all of us who entered the game alone the first time. The group of friends playing a game is probably a different thought pattern because they come in attached.

Me, nothing when I'm done. Free won't keep me nor will the game getting easier or more populated. LOTRO being an example, if I can walk away from a lifetime sub, that should explain it all. Some broken promises are complete deal breakers.

I think that people stay in popular games not because they want to socialize or talk, but because people love to show off. It is similar to real life, where there is often a race, to have better stuff than your neightbour, just to feel better. Or the race at the gym, where some people after gaining good body start to go out more into public to show off their hard work. It is the same in game, people want to be seen after getting that new armor, and the bigger audience, the better. They don't feel good about themselves, when they achieved something nice in a wasteland, where there is no one to impress.

Hope keeps me playing.  LOL

Hope that I might one day actually be able to do everything that there ever was to do.

Hope that I might find some people who are actually as into that idea as I am.

Hope that, if I do find them, they are not assholes.

And finally hope that after all of that is said and done, that there might actually be some hidden, higher level to it all.  You know, like having your character become a permanent part of the game lore or something.

Isn't that what keeps us all playing? ;)

I play looking for the rush I used to get in the original EQ (my first MMO).  The actual hard stuff.  If you die you are punished and none of this new age auto rez run back to corpse as a spirit stuff.  The 8 hour raids trying to kill a boss.  Losing levels trying to kill a boss.  Grinding out levels and having to work to level.  Hell levels!  Actually being scared to pull a mob instead of running into X dungeon without thinking (do I really want to do this).  Fighting and rushing to zones to beat another guild to a claim a 1 week spawn boss.

But its a new age.  I doubt we ever see that type of MMO again.
