This is the problem with open-world/sandbox/pvp games, they lend themselves very well to that 10% of the population that most of us consider as undesireable.  I would guess that 10% of Eve is people who just spam local, create margin scams, create scammy contracts, gatecamp, steal from their corp and can-flip/bump miners.  It is an awesome game with lots of freedom but sadly many people in the world who have never fought for freedom dont know how to use it responsibly.

EVE is a game where relations between players and trust really matters, which makes the social aspect truly amazing compared to other mmos.

You know how you can tell that someone grew old? They say things like "kids these days"...and old people have been doing all the way back to Hesiod almost 3,000 years ago. So either society has been in a constant state of decline or old people need to get a life so they something to look forward to again and stop looking to the past as being "better".

And no, old has nothing to do with age, its a mindset.

This is probably the most true statement of the entire thread, as made evident by many of the varied comments in this very thread. Open world sandbox games are the ultimate expression in gaming freedom, but that also leads to some of the worst behavior you will see anywhere. It's any wonder why so many sandbox games are either unpopular, or earn an overall negative reputation. I remember being at Jessica Mulligan's keynote address of Turbine Nation '04, where she mused if the people who created bots just to kill noobs as they came from portal space the first time logged in from prison, and the laughter from the audience had an air of nervousness behind it. Probably from those who were running unattended macros at the time....killing noobs on Darktide.

EVE has come full circle though, it would seem. Where it used to win "mmo of the year" from this very website consistently, to now being lauded as having the "worst online community". Games earn their reputations, so I have little to doubt that the EVE community is degrading.

Of course, the world needs villains for heroes to exist, right? Unfortunately for online gaming, villains seemingly win the war of attrition, as the "heroes" lose patience for something that is supposed to be a hobby and fun.

And no, old has nothing to do with age, its a mindset.

I wrote something more about that a bit further down.

What I said was, adult people can and will be bad too, humans are humans, regardless of the age.

Still, I remember in my early teens I was more immature then I am today, in my late teens things improved and when I passed 18-20 years old things improved a bit on the maturity side.

Though, I was slow to mature, as I have a mind that was stuck in a child / teenager mindset for quite a bit longer time then the average person.

At the moment I'm starting to near 30 years old but I am still quite childish and can in no way be stuffed into the box of a typical person saying: Oh kids these days, grow up, bla bla bla!

So on my end that's simply not true.

Still, parenting has gotten worse over the years, I would say too much time infront of tv's / monitors in general is a part of the cause, kids / teenagers being stuck infront of the screen that is.

Parents are using computers, tablets, game consoles to parent their children when they don't have time for them.

Where I live it's quite rampant actually, also with people I know, adults are too busy working, doing what they want with their spare time and so on.

Many of them should never have gotten children with the type of lifestyle they prefer to live.

But alas, growing up, get a good education, get a good job, get married, get children.

It's the cornerstone of humanity that most all live by and if you don't follow it then you are considered weird by a lot of people.

I remember my mother once said that someone she knew and her husband decided that they didn't want to have children as they just felt it would be too much fuss.

They haven't gotten any yet and have been married for over 15 years at least, to my knowledge.

A friend of the woman openly said that she thought they were being very very selfish for not having children.

I mean, what the flying heck?

The world, many countries are overpopulated as heck, if they find a way to have people live a lot longer then they do, along with many families getting 2-4 children instead of just one.

This world of ours is going to get seriously overpopulated.

The people and the friends that we have lost, and the dreams that have faded, never forget them~

Eve is awesome.  People don't like it because it forces you to think.  You can actually lose in Eve, and younger people these days think that they should win ALL the time.  They are insanely entitled and hopelessly self absorbed.

Eve has a few nutjobs and psychopaths just like real life.  If you have horrible judgement, you will get eaten alive in Eve as you will in the real world.

Young people today seem to have no passion, no vision, no moral compass.  Every generation I can think of PRIOR to the millenials at least produced some great music/ art/ political movement.... SOMETHING....

They are the WORST.  GENERATION.  EVER.

EDIT: and yes, before anyone says it... I know the video is talking about millenials in the US.  Can't say anything about Europe, Asia, or the rest of the world.  This generation is absolutely pathetic in the US.

It's definitely not the worst overall, but it is pretty bad. A bit of advice: If your political leanings are anything but to the far left, and you happen to believe in any sort of religion, don't say a damn thing about it even if the subject comes up in chat. You will be ridiculed, harassed, and might even get a few death threats (which CCP does nothing about BTW).

Barring that, it's not too bad. There are lots of people who help out new players through either advice on gameplay mechanics and / or ship fits, as well as handing out a few million ISK so people can reduce the initial grind & get right into one of the more fun early ships.

Most MOBAs have far, far worse communities, and though I am loathe to say it (since it's so damned cliche at this point), but WoW still takes the cake for worst community in an MMO.

Yet amazingly you place kids these days all into the same category.

You know, if you do a search you can find quotes from celebrities, the media, films from 40 years ago where they say TV is doing the same thing you are saying tech is doing today and my FATHER was listening to a program on "old time radio" website that carries all the radio programs from when he was a kid, one of them, Amos n Andy, actually had one of the characters say that RADIO was destroying our youth because they were spending too much time listening to it, losing their imaginations because the radio was doing the thinking for them...funnier yet, they complained about taxes being too high and congress being good for nothings!

Same shit, different generation and the only thing that's the same, its coming from people that grew old and looking for excuses. Same people that say that music today is garbage, real music was from "enter my own teenage years here".

"A very special kind of stupidity"

9/04/13 4:28:48 AM#31

Perhaps I can lay the OP's concerns to rest with a glimpse into my normal daily routine. I've been playing EVE for 7 years and I'm even on the CSM, so I should be the archetypal community member

06:30: Wake up, shower

06:45: Start up the ol' PC and log into the EVE forums. Spend a few minutes reviewing the CSM folder for any new topics or updates on how to screw the rest of the players over.

07:00: Find a thread by a new player. Spend 15 minutes convincing him that he's worthless and stupid and no-one loves him.

07:15: Log into EVE, make a little ISK by ransoming some day 1 new players.

07:45: OK time to go to work!

07:50: Push an old lady in front of the bus. Hahaha awesome look at the way her head burst! (Loot her handbag before getting on the bus)

08:00: Get to work. Pick up a bacon sandwich from the staff resteraunt paid for with the old lady's pathetic amount of money. Mmmm bacon!

08:15: Spend 45 minutes in the bathroom weeping uncontrollably as the repressed memories of childhood sexual abuse come flooding out AGAIN.

09:00: Repress memories. Log into work. Deliberately do everything wrong because I'm so immature. Blame everyone else for the "errors" and continue my insidious campaign to get the one decent, competent person on the team booted out for being a goody two shoes (and also women make me super uncomfortable)

12:00 Lunch! Pick up a sandwich and stroll around town for half an hour. Kill a dog.

12:45 Back to work! Spend most of the time on the EVE forums making people hate themselves and life because that's how people should be.

17:00 Time to head home. Offer the bus driver money to drive right through a group of schoolchildren using the road crossing.

17:30 Back to the basement! Order 2 XXL double chilli meat feast pizzas. Shower and change into my furry costume (my fursona is a 6' man-leech)

18:00 Pizza is here! Lay both pies on the floor, roll around naked on them. Go into the garden and ask the kids next door if they'd like to lick my pale, flabby body clean?

19:00 Log into EVE, gank and scam a few more trusting, hopeful new players and record their tears for the alliance orgy, held every year on midwinters' EVE. Chat with the CCP devs on skype and share the choicest morsels of pain and suffering with them.

23:00 And so to bed.

So as you can see OP, we're just normal ordinary people living normal ordinary lives, passionate about playing a game we enjoy

The thing with EVE is, somewhere over a ten year span, somewhere in the first few years really the decision was made that because EVE Online is a 'cold, harsh, universe' that meant people were duty bound to be pricks of the first order. Yes, OP the EVE online community is being lead by some of the strangest specimens our species has to offer. Because they are able to rob you of so much of your time in moments, it is a detriment to players of EVE Online and it will be the poison that prevents EVE Online from ever growing out of its toy smashing, kindergarten level game play.

I'd say built for and by closet sociopaths and CPA wonnabes, but close enough.

It's just a roleplaying video game.  It's got nothing to do with a person's real life morals and values.

CCP has a fanfest every year and how many players of this game that attend suffer injury at the hands of other players while they are there?

Again, it's just a roleplaying video game.  Just because a person RPs a pirate in a game doesn't mean they will steal a damn thing from you in real life.

Relax, understand it's just a game, go RP a character of your own, and have some fun.

The thing with scamming is that there is nothing graceful to it, nothing to admire even as you disapprove of it (for some reason, I'm thinking of that Steve Martin - Michael Caine film Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, with two con artists in Southern France who make a bet as to who will succeed in defrauding a rich lady). It's mostly stupid stuff, like 50,000 zydrine at 600 apiece = 300 million, or selling the wrong ship, or that margin buying scam where the scammer will use a three-pronged approach, one to set up a fake buy order, one to sell every item on the regional market, and one to advertise how good a deal that is (if it's that good a deal, why don't you buy it yourself?). It's stupid, it's annoying, but I guess it works. On whom, I don't know. Prices are too expensive for newbies, and veterans should be aware of all the tricks already.

As for the "community", the funny thing is that I'm not even sure there is one, except the trash talkers on the official forum which do succeed in making the entire player base look like self-absorbed jackasses. Instead, EVE is what happens when nobody is encouraged to trust anyone; the "community" disintegrates into small groups of people you already know. There seems to be a sort of camaraderie among miners, because mining is the mark of the carebear, I suppose, but for anything more fun, it seems entirely about distrust.

Also, I do recall that people - Goons, not surprisingly - did rally around Mittani when he made that utterly tasteless "if you want to make the guy kill himself" - something that's a crime in Iceland, by the way. And see how other threads on this very forum, not to mention the official forum, still treat him like a guru whose blog they follow assiduously. They've allowed Mittani to become an ambassador for the game, and the ambassador ended up drunk in public and said, with cameras rolling (I'm old-fashioned), that a guy should be encouraged to commit suicide. Not just a famous player and the most visible spokesman for one of the largest alliances in the game, but also one that the player base elected to the CSM and undoubtedly would have re-elected to the function to this day if he had not come to his senses (perhaps with a liberal dose of CCP arm-twisting).

Even with Mittani out of the picture, Goons still behave like they run the game. The other day, I was passing through a system in Caldari space when I saw over local chat that they were bullying ice miners for violating their so-called interdiction: "Everyone stop mining now!" diktats and so on.

There's no community, but there is a caste system. The big boys and their nullsec alliances on top, with their occasional war but usually busy basking in a Cold War situation where they don't like the other guys because they don't like the other guys, and otherwise pissing off the carebears when they get bored. (Nobody ever forced them to find a good reason for it.) The lowsec pirates getting whatever crumbs they can get. And at the bottom, the complete bottom, the Empire carebears and their missions, and mining, and -- what else is there, really? That huge battle that there was a few weeks ago? Out in Empire, it was utterly insignificant. When I heard about it, I thought "they're playing a completely different game, one I'll never get the opportunity to see". At the bottom, there is nothing, and it's boring; and at the top, sociopaths I don't want to interact with.

hundreds of thousands of people play EVE. The very large majority of them don't scam. Beware of generalising.
