I'm a bit conflicted here. I love the transition moves like sliding, hopping over ledges and even the dive/roll. I'm still bothered by the double jump and glide moves however. If it's due to an item or class buff that's one thing but if it's always on just because it still seems hokey.

I hope they put a lot of moves to items as its another reason to seek out baubles. Think of all the ways you can move around with mounts in EQ2.

I think that's another one of my main issues, what they showed at the SoE conference looked fine.  (Minus the gliding bit, I just think it looks totally out of place for whatever reason.)  The double jump...  Pretty much the same thing, but all of these crazy back flips and things like that is just bonkers.  It's not how I'd envision EQ, the cartoony graphics/characters I'm fine with but cooome on...  Let's try to keep it at least in line with what the other games were like.  I'm all for advancement and putting in new features and a lot of what they have planned seems solid.  This parkour crap though...  I can do without it.  I'm pretty sure a lot of other people can to.

They need to post this feature up on the round table asap.  At the very least they need to make it an optional choice if we'd like to use this as a way to move around or not.  It will totally break the immersion of the world if I look around and see thirty different people gliding through the skies, double jumping onto buildings/cliffs, etc.  Totally lame.

That's also Landmark...  Who cares, it's Minecraft.  If I couldn't fly in that game I'd be sad.  However they've already said that they're using the Parkour system in the actual game and as it stands...  It's not looking that fantastic.

I guess I'll reply in kind: See you at launch!

It makes sense to glide through the air and launch yourself off the side of a cliff while doing a back flip?  I sure as hell don't move like that while I'm traversing different terrain.  I REALLY hope that this Parkour crap is an option that can be turned OFF.  This is too cheesy, even for me.

For those people who complained about how unrealistic GW2 was with the rolling and such...  Just take a look at this goofy game.  I want to play it, but damn, I really do hope this isn't just going to be the default...  Such a terrible shame if it is.  I want to run around and STAY flat footed while I move about.  I don't want to be a damn acrobat.

Do you also shoot fireballs in real life too?

I can see it now....my character, a sadistic, twisted necromancer that spreads evil and undeath as he wanders the world...doing mad sick flips and frickin sweet vaults all over the place!

Yeah, I can see why some people would want the option to turn it off. That being said, I can see why some people would enjoy this style of movement (I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that most of the people who want this play agile, physical type characters). Personally, I think they really need to make it optional, or it's going to turn a lot of people off.

And for those who think it's petty to be upset over such a flamboyant character movement style, I'm sorry, but a large part of MMOs is being able to connect with your avatar. Just how that "old and boring" movement style of the past displeased you, flips, sliding downhill, and vaulting rocks is going to displease others. Try to consider others viewpoints for a moment before dismissing them so quickly.

That is the issue many seem to be suffering from. EQN is not our vision. They are making the game they want to make based on what they think players will want. They haven't lied or done a 180 on anything. They showed over the top movement at SOE Live (which people also freaked out about) and they are just showing more of it. We have seen a very very small amount of the game. Who knows what other crazy movement type things are in. It all fits together perfectly with their whole "heroic" style of game play. You either like it or don't.

Many people like this style as well. Guess who they are catering to? If it will cause you to not play the game, that is your loss. Plenty of others will play and enjoy what has been made for them.

Again, we have no idea how the game will actually play. Everyone flipping and gliding through the air could make complete sense once more is revealed.

No idea how your immersion would be broken if you agreed to play the game as it was designed. If I tried to play EQ as an Android from Space, my immersion would be broken too. It also wouldn't make any sense. If you aren't playing the game as it was designed and don't have a good experience, who's fault is that?

Now THAT is an extremely good idea that marries the best of both worlds.

I bet the Developers, even if they heard it, would ignore it.

Yeah, they obviously spent a lot of time and designer resources making this - and now they don't understand how anyone can think it looks infantile and boring.

It's an issue where movement style clashes so strongly with one’s expectations for the genre that it destroys the logical and internal consistency of the world. It matters because without it you simply can’t take the game content seriously. It becomes a freaking  joke and gets thrown away just like every book or movie that contradicts itself so and "jumps the shark" like Fonzie in Happy Days. In a fantasy MMORPG we expect to be able to "explore" a world of excitement and adventure rather than play superhero dude on the cliffs. She looks like Spiderman flipping around without web shooters in that video. Its just seems outright silly for this setting. Even if its just for landmark stuff there are better ways to handle it with far less investment of resources. I am not throwing in the towel on the game but this is a head scratcher leaving me to wonder what they are thinking here.

PS Edit: I mean seriously who are they targeting this at? If they think a "younger generation" will over look the breakdown of genre expectations for the "wheee" factor they botched it as they are more entitled than us dirty old farts.

Most MMOs are played by an older audience than they're designed for.

But Smed has always had a hard on for the younger kids' demographic who play FPS games like Call of Duty - they're the reason he dumbed down SWG with the NGE in an attempt to turn it into a shooter that would attract the 8-16 year olds. To be fair, it's the same audience Blizzard has been redesigning - dumbing down - Warcraft for over the last couple of years.

Now he thinks EQN is going to be his last best hope to get this young audience and he's going to infantilize it as much as he can to bring them in.

What he doesn't understand is that these kids:

- Don't have the same access to subscription funds as their older siblings

- Don' have the same attention span or intelligence required to allow them to engage with an MMO over a long period of time

- Are disruptive influences on community and gameplay.

In other words, Smed is, as he always as been, a round-headed idiot. And EQN is going be the masterpiece of his idiocy. However, he will never be penalised or fired for his mistakes because Sony, the parent company of SOE, understand MMORPGs even less than he does and just can't follow the mishmash of figures and projections he sends up to them every quarter.

@ all

Just relax everybody. This is obviously not EverQuest Next or Landmark but the new Tomb Raider game. Just look at the outfit, the pants, the gloves, even the pony tail is totally Lara Croft!

Sounds fairly logical to me. They have a design and they are following it. If people don't like it, they don't have to play. Or they can try as it won't cost them anything.

Many expect EQN or games in general to be designed around their personal expectations, which is unrealistic.

I like what I see and unless some unforeseen changes happen that completely turn me off, I will continue to be interested.

Those unhappy and expecting the game to change drastically (redoing foundation type things like graphics, movement, combat, class system) is asking a bit too much. Maybe they will tweak a few things, but they wouldn't have added the parkour if they didn't have a plan for it and didn't like it themselves. It isn't like a million people signed a petition for parkour movement. Obviously they have internal reasoning for adding it.

I'm pretty sure that'd be going against the exact principle that SoE is going for this time around.  I don't know if you've noticed the Round Table or not...  But yeah, they obviously want input on these types of subjects.  So I'm failing to see your point here.  If I was looking to vault around like a super hero I'd go play a super hero game.

They do want input, no doubt. Doesn't mean they will change fundamental parts of their design, even if there is a strong dislike on polls or the round table forum.

You are assuming that EQN isn't a "super hero game." They've called their art and combat styles "heroic." Now they have a movement system that is looking more and more super hero like. Seems they are going for over the top characters that are lively. Instead of the boring down to earth characters of the past. Maybe someone from DCU is on the dev team infecting them with his super heroitis?

They aren't making a traditional fantasy mmorpg. They've made this clear. The sooner people see this, the easier it will be to get where their concepts are coming from and where the game is heading.

I like the idea of having a Parkout like movement system.

however I was expecting something more like Assassin's Creed, you know something that looks (for the most part) like something that "could" be done in reality and less like something you'd see in a high-wire kung fu film where they use wires to have people leaping/flying around.

I wanted the movement to just have more weight behind it, vaulting over things, leaping over obstacles, climbing an object and leaping to another one.

Assassin's Creed is what I wish they were aiming for.

The Gliding part threw me off, cause there's nothing to explain it, magic? glider?

AT least with Archeage you have them actually using a "glider" to glide and it makes it seem fitting.

Its pretty clear by now that the target audience 7-14 year olds are, mostly female or boys that arent affraid of their feminin side, good middle class, hard working and have their own credit card but not enough time to play the game that much, so they spend lots of $$$ in the item shop.

This got to be a succsess!

Really? Do I have to explain 'commerce' to you?

If they make a game designed for designers and not for players - and they have a good record in doing that with failed and half-failed games from SWG to Matrix Online to EQ2 - then they don't make any money.

No, no, I don't think I can put it any simpler than that.

So now everyone is a superhero without capes, or does that come later?  WoW.. I guess this means that monks with safe fall is out of the question?  Since it appears that fall damage is non existent.. The more SOE pumps out information about EQN, the more they split the player base..  This game is becoming very polarizing and I wonder if SOE has taken note of it..
