I read most of this thread and see a reoccurring thing I needed to say something about.

It seems a LOT of people who are against this being p2p are GW2 fans.  Always stating that B2P is the way to go.

I played that game.  It was a f2p cash shop game with a box price.  You cant sit there with a straight face and tell me a game that has me use the cash shop to expand my tiny inventory isn't a damn f2p game...only they suckered me by telling me their game was b2p.  Buy to play is like a single player game where you buy the box and that's it.  Slapping a box price on an item mall game is just some new sort of evil that needs to start and end with GW2.

Also, I see a few people posting here that they will never play a p2p again, but are in the ffxiv forums posting about how they got to level 50 already...strange

Well anyway, stop trying to use gw2 as an argument for buy to play.  its not buy to play its a cash shop game with a box price, and ill never fall for that one again.

Im sticking with p2p for now.  They really need to remarket it as "never pay more than $15 a month" because a lot of these f2p games get you to pay far more than that a month...or make the game really frustrating, slow, and well...not fun....I don't have time to waste on games that are not fun because I didn't pay enough...I got enough unfun things to do in my life and they don't require a $60 cash shop purchase to temporality remedy that situation

I think the real advantage to p2p is that they can hire a staff based on monthly sales and be more stable with development.  That and I know up front how much ill be paying out of pocket to play.  Never any surprises.

Lastly, a lot of the arguments against p2p use games that go f2p after launch as an excuse.  I can only think of a couple games that actually went f2p.  Games like AOC, WAR, Anarchy Online, SWTOR...shit I know im missing a lot here but off the top of my head those games all restrict content from free players, and offer a p2p option to unlock it all...I don't call that f2p I call that a really long trial.  The list of games that actually went from p2p to f2p are like, aion,L2, TERA....and I think that's it.  Those are the only games I can think of that were p2p and then went f2p not restricting any of the games content.  The rest were a dirty trap to milk a dying player base and get some new suckers in.

I'm not buying a console port game with an identity crisis which was once announced as an MMO then it's not an mmo then there's a sub like an MMO.The hardcore fan and the P2P Elitists/purists may argue as much as they want but this game will go the B2P down the road and even then I won't play it.

When have TES games ever been console ports?  Ive been playing them since marrowind.

We using that really weak argument that if the game is offered on PC and consoles then its a crappy port, regardless of if its not a port?

If you have played Morrowind or even Daggerfall then compare it to Oblivion and Skyrim.

I played all but daggerfall.

I like all of them for what they were worth.

Again, its a really weak argument since its not true.

Bah, most of this is filled with false information and a very biased opinion.

I will never play a P2P games because it's too expensive. Sure, it doesn't sound like much, but it adds up. I don't think 1 game is worth that much. It's really simple to say, I don't like the model. P2P is a placebo to some as it makes some people feel they are getting a "quality" game and getting "quality updates." The truth of the matter is, I said placebo, because that is what it is. There really is no proof behind those claims, and in most cases, they are not true at all. Another good one, is that it keeps out the trolls and such. I never understood how that even makes sense. Trolls are not limited to just the people who will not pay >.>.  Again, it is a very laughable and questionable statement.

As for F2P getting you to pay more then $15 a month? LOL only if your stupid. No one makes a person pay for stupid item mall items.

As for your whole GW2 complaint. B2P doesn't require a item mall just so you know, nor does it require one like GW2. Also, even if expanding an inventory is a coupe bucks, it's still cheaper then $15 a month xD. So I am not even sure why the heck you would complain about it, and yet be comfortable with paying more for nothing. Is $15 a month on invisible content better to you? Do you expect to get a full games worth of content every 4 months? Heck, I do, which is why I say it's not worth it.

Then your advantage for being P2P statement is also pretty funny. P2P games, don't do very well anymore. It's been on a decline for a long time now. Like the past 5 years. Sure, they have great staff in the beginning, then it slowly degrades and declines until the game goes F2P.

Last but not least, many games went F2P. You calling it a long free trial doesn't change the fact that it's a F2P game. You also have to pay attention to the numbers of each of these games. Each P2P game that has come out year after year has gotten worse and worse. Most of them are not getting enough subs to keep it a P2P game.

See the issue is, I know a lot of people like the P2P model. It's a decent model if used correctly. However, what you like and I like personally, does not matter. What matters is money and numbers.

If the game is good then I would have no issues paying a sub for it... of course if its bad i would not..

I have yet to play a f2p or b2p mmorpg that has been as good as some of the past games that needed a sub..

Most f2p games i dont bother with as i know they are usually pretty crap.. EQ:N will be an exception tho.

You can sit there and tell me that you don't have to use cash shops, which is prevalent in all f2p game and that one b2p game with a cash shop.  However it directly effects the game.  Some people want to pay a SMALL price and get the whole damn game and not worry about money sink holes in their time sink hole.

Yeah a lot of people play f2p games and don't pay a dime.  THey are not smarter than those who pay...not by a long shot.  They sit there and have a sub par gaming experience for it.

My point is to have the best gaming experience you need to pay for the game regardless.  P2P is the cheapest in this sense.

I know f2p only players defend their business model like its a religion and all...but the fact is...you are having a reduced gaming experience because of it.  That might be fine with you, and its common practice for people to hop around f2p games and leave them once the cash shop becomes a fun factor...in fact that is precisely why you have so many of these people camping p2p game foums begging for it to go free so they can play.

Call it misinformation all you want man.  in a p2p game I have the whole game for a small price.  in a f2p game I get a piece of the game and all the fun stuff for a huge price.

As for the GW2 thing.  If all the offered was deco pets in the cash shop I would still consider it B2P.  They offer stuff that effects in game mechanics however.  That is an item mall.  You have purchased a box for a f2p game.  That to me is by far the worst payment model to date...and theres good reason that every major game coming out has ignored it.

Absolutely right. That's one of the things the F2P fans never like to talk about. They're playing a game with slower horses, more need to grind due to slowed-down experience, less bag space, limited bank space, less character slots for alts... things that they would loudly complain about if they were playing a P2P game,

But their desire to believe that they're getting something for nothing makes them rationalize all the crap they have to put-up with--like constant non-stop in-game advertising and marketting, and all the things they have to do without as no big deal.

And the ridiculous posturing about B2P not being like F2P is tiresome. All B2P is, is just a version of P2P with an up-front entry fee.

See, I have played all sorts of MMOs, which include all the payment models. I personally have spent most of my time in F2P games because I found a few games I enjoyed and they happen to be free. Just because a game is P2P doesn't mean a person will enjoy it. It really comes down to personal opinion. In my eyes, every P2P game that has come out, has been crap. I don't enjoy them at all. TERA was the last one I tried, and I had fairly high hopes for it too. I payed for a years worth of service, and was paying for another copy at the same time by the month.

Then it went free to play eventually. No offense, but it was a total waste of my money. It's not as if past P2P games where any better either. So I am done with P2P games. It's to expensive. I have found more enjoyment from single players games like Skyrim and F2P games like Mabinogi.

P2P, a whole video game for a small price? How long you play your MMOs for? I personally like to spend 3 - 5 years in an mmo. That is $585 - $945, I hardly call that a small price for 1 game. I played mabinogi for 5+ years and even spent money to get full access to everything and didn't come even remotely close to spending THAT much.

You call it a reduced gaming experience? What F2P games have YOU played? O.o

Most F2P games I have played, it isn't THAT bad. XD All it really does is give you the choice of WHAT you want to pay for and when, rather then having to pay for everything including things you don't want every month. To me, more choice is the best gaming experience. Not only that, but game companies have shown it's a better model . Almost all games that have gone F2P have done better. That includes TF2.

So what you call sub par gaming experience, I don't agree at all. Think about a cell phone company only offering an $80 per month fee because they include EVERYTHING. Well ... what if you don't want EVERYTHING? Think of it that way. YOU may want everything, and YOU may think it's sub par, but I don't.

Sadly, just about every F2P game I have played is still easy compared to older games. Despite the slight disadvantage. Actually, I am surprised people even pay for some of the things they do pay for. It isn't for a better gaming experience, it's for those who want it NOW. XD

Great lie, and awesome non sense.

For a F2P game not to be worth playing, it would have to cost something. Unless you want to include the time it takes you to play it as it's worth, in which case P2P games are in a worse situation because it would mean it has to be leagues better then F2P games. However, that simply isn't the case. Games that where once P2P such as TERA went F2P. The actual game didn't degrade. It's still the same game.

Also, P2P isn't always "quality." First of all, what is quality?

According to google,

  1. The standard of something as measured against other things of a similar kind; the degree of excellence of something: "quality of life".
That means, according to you, all F2P games are not as good as P2P games. Yet there are 90 - 95% more F2P games, and what about the P2P games that switched to F2P? Do those not count?

If I gave you a quiz on the most popular F2P games, you think you would do well on the quiz? I am assuming you must know a lot about these F2P games to know they are not worth playing. :3

Let's be honest here. You are just trolling. I also bet you have not played that many F2P games out of the 400+ available.

I'm going to pay. I don't mind paying a sub fee.

I have to buy gas for my car, pay the electric bill.

Sometimes It is nice to pay for something that I will enjoy.

I have to pay for all sorts of stuff I don't want to.

You don't enjoy a electric O.o?

lol just kidding.

I know what you mean though. I personally will not be playing ESO. The sub is too much for what I feel it's worth. If MMOs did a roll over minutes thing like cell phone companies I might reconsider.

didnt read what you posted but its true. Zero ftp games worth playing. Numbers show people are leaving the market and moving on to other genres. MMO's are picking up new players as well as single [player games.

google doesnt post definitions nob it connects you with web links.  Again F2P era was brought on by forum cry babys...

I would much rather just buy a game and pay a sub. I have yet to find a decent f2p that doesn't end up costing more to play to be competitive, f2p is just a con to make you think it's a good deal. As for b2p again in the long run they still often cost more to play and I just don't like cash shops. I personally prefer to buy my game, pay my sub and then get the entire game warts and all without having to pay more. ( this obviously doesn't mean character customise options, name change etc. I don't have an issue with this)

As for putting up with it, NO. More like I simply don't give a crap. If the game is fun, why should it matter?

Also, I am not going to keep arguing with your stupid B2P statements. You keep saying it over and over again like a broken record even though I have PROVEN you are wrong.

Or do you still not understand what equals means? Tiresome? maybe because you are WRONG? Derp. B2P is not the same thing as F2P. It gets tiresome, because you keep saying statements that make no sense.

I don't even know why you have such a freaking issue with B2P just because GW2 did it wrong >.>

Stupid fallacy statements. GW2 did this, and GW2 did that. I don't like the B2P model because GW2 .. GW2 ... GW2, blah blah blah. GW2 has a shop .. GW2 Blah. Blah. -.-

Ya .. Ya I hear ya. Your right, you proved GW2 did it wrong. ... big deal ... now shush. GW2 doesn't account for the entire B2P model.

I totally disagree with you speaking for myself. There isn't one F2P game that has kept my interest for more than 1 month. Why, because the experience feels completely crippled, and yes, you do end up paying more for the same experience, support gets totally gimped, and it just never feels as satisfying quality wise.  The only game that has kept me playing more than a month that wasnt P2P was GW2, but even that game got tired and repititive after 4-6 months so I quit.  Unlike the way you are responding to these folks, I don't think you are wrong, I just have a different opinion than you over what I thing is a good game versus what is not a good game. You should respect other folks opinions. If ESO can keep me 6 months, which as of today I think it will now, I don't mind shelling out $15 a month when I was doing that for WOW when it was released when I made 75000 less per year.

There Is Always Hope!

Proof?

Definition of equal

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/equal

B2P: $60

F2P: $0

Hmmm ... let me think ... this is sort of really difficult.

Gosh .. I can't seem to ... oh wait ... that's right. 0 is not equal to 60.

That means F2P is not the same thing as B2P.

No matter how much you ACT like B2P and F2P are the same model, doesn't make it true. They are similar models, not the same.
