I want travel that's a part of the experience, is rewarding and fun(Like skyrim, where things happen on the roads and in the wild, traveling is one of the best parts of skyrim because you never know what's going to happen or what you're going to discover or find),

Not a barrier between experiences (Holding W for 60 minutes for the sake of holding W for 60 minutes),

Along with some options for faster travel as a utility to be used when needed.

That way I want* to always travel by land and explore first, but I have the option to fast travel if I need to get to an event or meet up with friends fast.

Legends of Kesmai, UO, EQ, AO, DAoC, AC, SB, RO, SWG, EVE, EQ2, CoH, GW, VG:SOH, WAR, Aion, DF, CO, MO, DN, Tera, SWTOR, RO2, DP, GW2, PS2, BnS, NW, FF:XIV, ESO, EQ:NL

Landslide results. Immersion wins again.

We need to pay PLAYERS for speed spells and ports, not random rocks and waypoints.

Since the best option isn't included, not much can be deduced from this poll.

The "best option" is solely your opinion..

I never  liked WoW's method.

I chose option 3.  EvE has slow travel for 99% of it's game (capital ships are the difference).  When Capital ships are used, then it costs a resource which was paid for by isk.

If they have any type of meaningful asset destruction where two sides are fighting over x resource, you don't want fast travel either.  As a side note, when you die in PvP, you should go back to the city you were bound to and not just some random spawn near were you died; this is how they did it in Shadowbane as well.

As for the specifics of the OP, slow travel makes getting somewhere more meaningful.  It cost something to get there; TIME.  Time is valuable and it helps players choose what area is more valuable to them.

Number 3 because each travel was a minigame itself in EQ. It required planning and involved risk. Wonder if the memememee generation can ever accept it though.

Yep,traveling was an adventure in its self..

and no,majority of the memememe crowd would probably quit.

Or you could have both and appeal to both crowds at the same time.

I have no problem with fast travel between continents (that boat sucked ass in EQ1 and more than once I got bugged out of it in the middle of the ocean when it zoned and ended up dead in a place I couldn't get to) and then running/mounts in between the zones.

I voted #2 but with a twist - player-made portals aka magic gates. They are large undertaking to build and expensive. And the best part is that they are DESTRUCTIBLE. Can you imagine the gameplay around this? I know it sounds crazy.

not at all, I like it.

I voted #2 though now that I think of it, #3 is more compelling and more interesting.

Oh well.

3 but with the caveat that travel by foot takes twice or even 3 times longer than is stated there but there are more dangerous shortcuts.

May sound harsh but if anyone's ever played Entropia Project (that's before it became Entropia Universe) will know the good old dirt runs to discover new teleporters... I once ran buff naked through a open pvp zone with spawns that could two shot me just to cut an hour long trip down to 20 minutes... brix were shat when I had to run up a hill with a conga line of beasties.

We live in a fantasy world, a world of illusion. The great task in life is to find reality.

Yup the best fast travel in any MMO ever.  It had all the things needed in an MMO to work.  Not only did anyone have the ability but you were pretty much required to have social interaction to be able to travel around Dereth because the individual only had the ability to portal to 2 places.

If your idea of a Sandbox is open FFA Full Loot PvP, full crafted world with minimal support for anything combat then your sandbox ideas are bad! Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

In general, I like to have all kinds of travel.  Diversity = win.

Realistically, it depends on how the world and lore are done.  In LoTRO, I enjoyed slowly taking a horse across zones.  It added to the character of the game and made me feel part of the world.  The exact same travel method in EQ2 did absolutely nothing for me since the world is really bland and the game has very little in terms of immersion.

To this day, I think Anarchy Online had it right.  There was all kinds of travel - there were Whompas (instant travel between select major centers), there was the Grid - only accessible by a certain class, with multiple travel destinations, there was running all over the world, there were flying cars that helped you get fast to really far off places.    To different places, you need to take some or several methods of transport.    And all the transport made sense for the game world.

Interesting you should say that as I had the exact same experience.

I still travel across zones by foot or horse in LOTRO. The few times I tried EQ 2 I just couldn't like its zones.

i especially didn't like how they did one particular forest, can't remember the name but it had a river running through it and bridges.

It never really felt like a forest but more like a path with some higher level geometries with trees stuck here and there.

You can't have both. All games have both these days. Fast travel always cancels out slow travel. You can WALK everywhere in GW2 but you don't. Also we need to bring back a sense of community and have players in charge of speed boost and ports.

I voted three, but it ain't gunna happen. There is no way EQN will alienate the players that don't have time to smell the roses.

I'm tired of these notions that games have to be "dumbed down" or "easier" in order to cater to certain types of players. This notion that the game has to be for everyone. Obviously the MMO genre has divided and now it is time to make games for target audiences. Not for "everyone". When you make games for "everyone" they become watered down and eventually you're bowling in the bumper lanes again. That way no one gets hurt. But is it fun?

That's amazing, because Skyrim allows you to instantly click on any known location and warp right to it, yet I still find myself walking around or riding a mount. 90% of the time.

Why?  Because it's a great experience that's rewarding.

You can have both, you're just too short sighted to understand why/how.

Yes, in GW2 I would just walk around and travel.  Why?  Because there are countless dynamic events in every zone, and there are zones I completely missed when level up and in the zones I did level up in I didn't get to see all the events.  Also because of the level scaling, all of the content is viable and on par challenge wise for my main.  So exploring/traveling is rewarding and fun.  It also has fast travel to use when you need it.

So yes, GW2 does have fast travel, but the world is interesting enough to not want to skip right over it.

Which has been my point.  You can have both, as proven by other games.  Also, the amount of people who choose to fast travel or not has nothing to do with how you* personally end up playing the game.  If the world is interesting, living and dynamic....  If traveling is a part of the experience that is rewarding both on a character progression level and on an entertainment level, then what does it bother you if you choose to explore on foot and other choose to teleport around?

I say again, you can have both and appeal to each camp of players.

It's been proven so you can't win this argument lol.

Your argument is exactly the same as saying "I hate playing a healer.  I don't care that some people like it.  Healing is stupid and shouldn't even be a part of the game".

Games can be designed to fit different player types and preferences.  It doesn't always have to be a strictly niche game.
