Well said.

The action MMO is a bane on the genre for me too.I can't stand the one hotbar, dodge, roll, spam fest games with 5 buttons to press and the people that say 'oh too many buttons and I can't see whats going on'' or 'you make macros and just press 4 buttons' are also morons.

I play EQ2 and have all my abilities on hotbars,I also know what every single one of them does and puts them in order.I also out dps anyone of my same class even if they have better gear if they use the so called macros.

Macros are a lazy thing that makes you not be able to react as quick to certain situations and also can make you use abilities that you shouldn't. The traditional MMORPG with roles not the no trinity action  or I just need 1 character and can respec to whatever role type of casual games we have had for the past 9 years is what I want!

Sadly I believe it will never ever  happen in our lifetimes. You can name EQN,Archeage et cetera but sadly I think they will go the casual lets please everyone right down to 4 year olds to make as much money as possible route.

I have never been impressed by "action" combat.  Seems too much like the simplified console gaming combat.  Might as will just jump on people like Mario with limited abilities, button spamming, lack of real thought combat.

Action based mmo crowd? lol please, most gw2 fanatics are self proclaimed vets that hailed this game pre launch as the savior of the genre. and they are sticking to it.

I really enjoyed the combat in GW2 compared to the other MMOs on the market.

I think the main reason for it, is that the combat just feels pretty fluid.  This is what made WoW so successful and lasting.  Combat just flows smoothly.

Even though, in reality, the controls are the same as every other MMO out there, things were alot more mobile and active with the dodging and leaping/rolling skills, etc.

Having said that, I quit GW2 many months ago because, while the combat was fun, there wasn't really anything to do at max level.

I thought it was decent, but without something to do with it's useless. Tera's quest system is below standard, and the chat is the worst in gaming history imho.

Edit: I started playing Rift a bit along side GW2 and it is confusing sometimes. It is good for my brain to try and do a couple things different though!

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

There is more to dumbing down a UI and action bars. With a PC you have viable updates, expansions, and even player mods that a console system just doesn't have. Usually, once a console game is out, it is what you get.

Every time I try to plan another MMO, if it doesn't have some sort of dodge or movement it just feels slow, old, and boring! Even FPS's feel less exciting. I didn't realize it was because of GW2 right away. Rather I kept thinking, why does this feel to dead, so slow? Then I instinctively tried to dodge once and it hit me, GW2!

GW2 has many things I would like to change, but I have grown very fond of that combat.

I am on the other side of the fence. To me, all of the dodging looks absolutely ridiculous. I'm am very into the "look" of combat as much as the feel. Why I think Gw2 is a amazingly STUNNING game in terms of the visuals, all of the constant dodging kills me. I fought something a week or so ago when I finally logged back and and there were about 8 or 9 people there just rolling all over the fucking place. It really hurt the feel for me and the look of combat as it looked like a group of acrobats fighting at the circus...

I"m kind of with you. I don't mind some classes to be "dodgy rolley" but when everyone is rolling and flipping it just seems silly.

Same here, I once mentioned on the GW2 forums that they should take it a step further and give each class maybe even spec a different "dodge/block/evade" animation...perhaps even cash shop ones. The thieves have a special dodge roll animation, and dodge rolling seems suitable for the class, maybe even randomizing a few animations to make it look cinematic.

Examples:

Casters go into an ethreal like form based around their main spec magic (Mist form, Cloud of instects, etc.)

Sheild/Heavy Armor users can actively block with stamina, or "dodge" by parrying, or dodge by sidestepping (No rolling lol)

Medium Armor users/Adventurers can dodge roll, or do evades by sidestepping/leaping, or parries.

I also hate watching small humanoids shield/face tank monstrous creatures lol...I am a picky but its the little things that count.

I agree and I like those ideas.

I like various combat styles for various reasons. Sometimes I love to play a slightly faster paced, interactive combat style like GW2. Sometimes I love an old school, almost turned based style like EQ1 or XIV. I can't stand Tera's combat, but that's one of the very few mmorpgs that I really didn't like the combat style. I still love UO's combat, and I absolutely love AC1's combat.

Right now though, I am really enjoying XIV, and will play GW2 as well. Between the two I have all of my likes covered :)

True, but how many decent PC games actually have modding?

And out of that modding how many of them are really good? Except for skyrim, which half the mods were fixing or doing things the devs were to bad or lazy to fix, most of the mods were not that great.

Also Expansions are not only on PC so I don't see point, actually if you really think about it except for MMO they hasn't really been a proper expansion for years, just simply dlc which happens on both consoles and PC.

tl;dr

My point being your statement is misinformed.

are you serious? lol. I guess if I completely ignored the fact that every console in the past 8+ years has had internet connectivity, its own network, built in hard drive and tons of dlc, Id share that pov.

Player made Addons dumb down gameplay. Mod communities make games like skyrim better, but we are talking about mmos here which most of them do not allow mods.

TERA's combat ruined aion for me...for like 3 weeks then i went back to playing aion. Guild wars 2 combat ruined most MMORPG combat, I did play age of wushu, but the only interesting thing was the flying skills but they did not happen frequent enough and some of the decent ones required way too much luck to acquire (random encounters and they only appear when they know u dont have enough money to buy the skill).

I will say that for me, TERA or fps targetting + gw2 limited skill system + real time dodge or simply Dragon's Dogma combat would be the ultimate combat system for an MMO and single player game. But i can only dream.

That's what Neverwinter does.. and although I don't play Neverwinter, it makes the combat look much better in my opinion. I really don't think I'll be completely happy until the combat in an MMO is like Batman/Assassins Creed, which seems A LOT more real them Gw2 diving around like a maniac.

So they're the first attempt at a GW2 clone?

Obviously TSW isn't a GW2 clone - it even released first.

On the other hand even though TSW share some combat elements with GW2, you have less skills that can be shot without target, the combat feels less fluid - probably due to the fact one has to constantly be spamming the builders/finishers, while in GW2 you can have the #1 skill be auto cast and, because the animation just isn't as good.

Currently playing: GW2
Cooperative (semi cooperative)board games you should check: Pandemic, Sentinels of the Multiverse, Eldritch Horror, Descent 2.0,Level 7 Omega Protocol, Last Night on Earth

Wushu did it for me. If I can't double and triple jump, sprint, dash, and control my movement when doing this, I feel like I'm glued to the ground.

oh and being able to scale walls... omg not being able to in other games is so

Lol, although the game hasn't ruined combat for me i must admit i do find myself trying to do these movements in other MMO's lol. Thing is i have been playing other MMO's alongside Age Of Wushu so it's not really a big deal to me.

If you have only been playing GW2 or Age Wushu for the last 9 or 11 months then combat is going to feel alien in oher mmo's that don't have the same movement.
