The more story you have, the closer to themepark you become.

That's totally false. EQ has the most elaborate story of any MMO out there, there is so much lore you could fill thousands of books with it, and EQ wasn't a themepark, it was one of the most free and unrestricted PVE MMO out there.

She's right. EQ told A story. A very long complex story spanning ages and geography. What it didn't do was tell YOUR story.

like some of the themeparks out there today. Your story, life, and adventures were up to you.

Waterlily I [heart] u. Just sayin =P

I disagree with you on the semantics thing Dandurin. To me they are two very different things. But I can see how you would see it that way. Regardless I thought your comment along with Craftseekers were nicely done. ;)

An open world is a type of video game level design where a player can roam freely through a virtual world and is given considerable freedom in choosing how or when to approach objectives.[1] The term "free roam" is also used, as is "sandbox" and "free-roaming".[2][3] "Open world" and "free-roaming" suggest the absence of artificial barriers,[4] in contrast to the invisible walls and loading screens that are common in linear level designs. An "open world" game does not necessarily imply a sandbox. In a true "sandbox", the player has tools to modify the world themselves and create how they play.[5] Generally open world games still enforce some restrictions in the game environment, either due to absolute technical limitations or in-game limitations (such as locked areas) imposed by a game's linearity.

lol.  Nice.

But remember, Sandbox is still open for interpretation.

Yep.  It sure is left up to interpretation.

But Sandbox = UGC.  Themepark is content that is fed to you and you 'ride' it for amusement.  The whole design philosophy behind themepark vs. sandbox is different.  These are things that have been known among the community for years.  The only reason why it's in question now is because some people refuse to accept the truth.  Therefore the very essence of the definition is now in question.

Pretty much true.

If EQ:N doesn't at least have player-made non-instanced housing, ships, and castles then Smed is full of crap.

Not saying that EQN won't have this stuff, in fact, I really hope it does, but even if it didn't, it could still be a sandbox lol.

Like I said, things we normally associate with Sandbox MMOs (housing, crafting, FFA pvp, etc) can work in a sandbox, and can improve the experience, but these are features that don't directly translate into Sandbox.)

Vanguard's FFA pvp server had non-instanced housing, crafted boats, a really customizable crafting system in general (with made-to-order items and crafting mechanics that had it's own "combat", skills, level and gear system), and FFA pvp, non-instanced dungeons, a huge open world, multiple starting cities, freedom in leveling up (there were multiple zones over multiple land masses that offered the same level mobs, so non-linear leveling).... and yet no one would even say that Vanguard was a "Sandbox" or even a "SandPark".

Point is that sandbox is a term that can mean many things.  There is no official definition of what that word means, only the definitions of what people want* it to mean.

Death to Themepark.

7/12/13 3:47:53 AM#86

Arguments over semantics and ignorant misconceptions flyin' all over the place in here.

Sandbox and themepark are relative designations.  Relative primarily to the time which they were developed and the technology available.

Everquest was never referred to as themepark before WoW.  It was a term used specifically to describe World of warcraft and the emerging gameplay that provided players with a steady flow of instant gratification, steamlined content and very linear progression much like that of a patron making his or her way around a themepark from one attraction to the next, and their ability to experience a said attractions in a short time with little effort.

A game is not, nor ever has been "themepark" simply due to the existence of levels or content created for players of a certain strength or level.  PvE doesn't mean themepark, PvP doesn't mean sandbox.

Sandbox games did not always include terraforming or even city building, but they were sandbox then none the less.

You can't argue what did or did not constitute a sandbox or themepark in the past based on the modern definitions of either term.

UO for instance, was about as much like classic EQ on a pvp server as it is like a modern sandbox game such as Wurm Online.  EQ pvp had racial and alliance territory and city control.  There were players who just crafted and bought sold in the trade areas (EC/Gfay).  There were players who only PvP'd, there were players who mostly PvE'd.  There was very real diplomacy and systems of order and discord determined by the players.  Yes, you didn't build cities, but frankly that wasn't much more limited than UO at that time.

See how silly it is to try to classify old games by new labels?

Played EQ, UO, DAoC, AO, WoW, EQII, Vanguard, Ryzom, Darkfall, Warhammer, Rift, MO, Tera, DFUW, Age of Wushu, NW2, ESO and many others I don't remember or care to admit.

Looking at this, you can see where just about any MMORPG would not be a true sandbox.  You can just log in and decide that dragons are going to rain from the sky and kill the server.  In an MMORPG, players want a game, and a game* requires rules that the players must abide by. You are not given total freedom.

Single player games are able to have more freedom (No one cares if you nuke your own city in Sim City), but in an MMORPG you need to create an environment that's health for everyone.

You would not make the game so "free roam" that a 5 minute old character can just walk across the map and punch a castle to the ground or go kill Lord Naggy solo.  You're not going to make every zone in the game able to be beaten by a fresh player (that would take away progression and character development people want).

There are tools that can be used to allow the players more freedom than other games. Multiple areas for character to progress through instead of just just 1 linear path, no levels at all, making the entire game completely skill based so you really can "free roam" if you're good enough, open world house crafting, transforming the environment (building castles, burning forests, etc), freedom to treat players however you want (kill, steal, abuse, etc), ability to create your own content (like the Neverwinter foundry), etc etc....

But these features do not HAVE to be in the game for it to be a sandbox game.

Exactly, and I agree.

I'd also mention it's silly to suggest that new games have to have X feature to be X type, as I just covered, in the post above.

A pure sandbox would be rpg maker but an online mmo version. That game would have more content than any other mmo if players designed everything with developer given tools. I wouldn't pay a subscription but that mmo might be fun.

I haven't played all mmos. Has there ever been a pure sandbox? I mean where players design or create everything from scratch or prefabricated templates?

I want a themepark with a side order of sandbox and tons of emergent gameplay.

The closest thing that I have played to a pure sandbox is Minecraft, but it isn't an MMO, and it isn't 100% pure sandbox (in survival mode anyway). I have, however, played some very very "open world" MMO's--Asheron's Call and Darkfall spring immediately to mind.

Personally, I think that what the vast majority of players calling for a sandbox  want is a non-restrictive open world MMO, with some minor sandbox elements (like non-instanced housing and player built towns). The word "sandbox" has come to mean more than its literal meaning; it seems to mean something like "everything unlike a themepark".

To me, a sandbox is a world where things are happening everywhen, and you choose how you interact with them, with an extensive array of options. There is no set leveling path, but a multitude of different ways to effect the world around you.

Some people might want to progress through the game building and selling infrastructure, becoming a real estate mogul.
