If you admit this then why did you felt the need to defend the game.  People are discussing what they felt bout it.  Bland is what it is, everyone agrees that Rift isn't anything revolutionary or innovative but just a rehash of the same ol' same ol' which equates to bland or uninspired.

People are discussing why they felt no love for Rift even though they tried, and some tried numerous times and discuss that it might be.  This isn't bashing.

People who want something new are certainly not going to be playing Rift.

The animations have been a turn off to me from beta on, but it wasn't all that. Later i found out that it is the world design or rather lack of a "world" designed. Rift's zones resemble the most soulless, lifeless and unimmersive world i've leveled in and even though my chars were fun to play, i couldn't find any place to have some fun with them in the open world.

The whole map consists of boring open areas, gaps and wide open spaces to leave enough room for rifts and invasions to spawn. There isn't one group of mobs that isn't placed for the purpose of a "kill them"-quest and Rift has not a single iconic location of which games like EQ or WoW have tons of and that you love to visit over and over again or roam around at for evenings. Telara is all "level and forget". EI was  better in that matter though.

When i tried SL i found the new zones even worse. The world is designed as if it's just a platform to mindlessly place various mobs on and let the players grind on them. Just ride in a circle and kill everything you run into, repeat.

Sounds like you simpely tired of the typical WoW based themeparl MMOs.

Maybe.  But when I go back to WoW for a few months at a time, usually at expansion releases, I still find it fun and engaging...

You have a time investment into WoW. Not with Rift, hence the two like entities seeming to not be equal.

This is a really insightful post.  I've got time invested in Rift and still enjoy the game for its style (tab-target, skill-bar rotation, static combat).  I don't find Norrath (EQ2), Middle-Earth (Turbine's version in LotRO anyway), and Azeroth (WoW) to be any more interesting.  They all play pretty similar in their combat and world design.  You can say that about any world where the game doesn't interest you.  Have you ever heard the GW2 haters spout on about how boring and uninspired Tyria is?

I feel the same way about it. It lacks the realism that can draw you in and it lacks the larger than life feel of WoW. It's color pallet is bland, the quests are bland, the characters are bland and the combat system is bland. So to are the animations and gear. I felt like the developers use WoW as the basic stencil or framework, but didn't add the color. They didn't want to have the over the top characteristics that wow had, such as the huge weapons and shoulders you get.

Instead they went for something a little more down to earth but not realistic enough to make the game feel like a simulation. It seems a great idea but instead the game lacks charisma and the fun factor that wow had. I mean wow even makes traveling feel epic. With Rift it's just a teleport. But in Rifts defence, I think their raiding is right up there with some of EQ2 best raids.

Not exactly.  The combat is more engaging in WoW.  The spell effects, sounds, animations, races, is what makes WoW superior to me.  Rift felt "bland", but to be more descriptive, it felt like a B-rated "movie" with a low budget.  Otherwise it's a decent game if you're willing to put up with these negatives.

Same old same old. They're wasting their time making any more of these predictable quest hub-to-raid zzz fests. There are more people who have played this format to death than there are young people coming of an age who haven't experienced it yet and so might go for it. Lets face it, the only reason anyone would bother with the download is because there is a serious lack of anything else original and engaging to play. If only someone could think of and develop a novel format they would make an absolute bloody fortune.

You said it better than i could.  I agree with you.  They tried to have a realistic art style and that's why i couldn't get into it.  I really liked the dungeons though.

Rift has everything going for it except the dull combat and animations that go along with it. As dumb as it may sound its a great game minus the terrible combat.

Playing Rift on the side at the moment. Most of the game is better than average, but nothing special. I think most of the dissociation comes from the souls. It borrows WoWs procs and triggers combat, but none of the souls really feel special. EQ2 and WoW had really fleshed out classes, with lore and individual looks and spells. Rift feels more like an RPG simulator than an actual RPG for me. Honestly if EQ2 had the same F2P model as Rift I would be playing that instead, but can't be bothered forking out $40 for an expansion when a new one (and EQN) are due soon.

I'm trying Rift again, haven't really played since launch.  On paper, Rift has everything that I find interesting in an MMO, including housing.  But for some reason, I'm finding the gameplay, especially combat, to be very bland and uninspiring.  I can't put my finger on what it is.  Possibly the washed-out graphics, the armor models and the combat animations?  Anyone else have the same issue?

You are absolutely touching the subject. I have made a handful of threads on their forums in the past highlighting the combat animations. Despite rift being a game where the devs actually are "listening"/replying, they never gave any feedback on these issues. At least one would hope for some toning for thhe expansion but it never did.

RIft's engine is also quite special since objects not far away will instantly pop up infront of you, which for some can break immersion. Rift may have a lot of interesting features, but in the end, it's a classic MMORPG that lacks the little extra in some deptartments. People today are picky and they want that special something, it's just what MMORPG society we live in today as there are so many options out there to compare to.

As a PvPer I never got to fully enjoy the gameplay as they never offered any unique modes/ways to progress other than the long "grind". Grind is good I suppose and inevitabile, but it is the way it is presented and done that is the dealbreaker.

We live in a fantasy world, a world of illusion. The great task in life is to find reality.

The combat animations are some of the worst in the history of the genre.  Really wish they would of put more emphasis on making the animations fluid and more precise.  Swinging a 2handed weapon is atrocious and it is a primary reason why I quit the game and can't go back.

If your idea of a Sandbox is open FFA Full Loot PvP, full crafted world with minimal support for anything combat then your sandbox ideas are bad! Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

I enjoy the game . Yes I would rather play a sandbox but there are none that are quality at the moment .

Until then RIFT is fun and even tho I can play The Secret World  for free I choose RIFT .

Also RIFT is the only MMO that I have gone back to after leaving .

I hear you.

Now, I REALLY want to like Rift, but it's just too dam feisty. Anyhow, I guess that the world indeed does lack soul. Everything from the first minute is either a WTF??? fest or simply boring/bland. Just look at who you really are in Rift-either an undead or a clone. Does any of that sound interesting? Better yet, in both cases you are the messiah of the respectful Faction. Then there's the story(or lack of it) coupled with locations you will not remember. From silverwood, the only places you can remember are Argent glade, Sanctum and overwatch keep. Everything else is...like it isn't. The design of quests is really bland as well-they aren't even trying to immerse you so you forget that you are doing kill 10 X quests(even WAR managed to immerse you in their PvE-but there was an if there. If you are a Warhammer fan-specifically WHFRP). Nope. Quest texts are sometimes a single sentence. Lol? Really? The more I think of it...the more bland it seems.

What I think is most horribly designed in Rift is the reward system. I got a level? Whoopdie doo! I get +2% dmg lol. Or an ability I didn't want anyhow. Items? Ok. Time for calculus 101(not even maths lol). If the mob has got 50 hp and I do 10 DPS(skills are factored in), how long does it take to kill the mob? Now let's say that our DPS rose to 35 DPS. Want to guess how much health the mob is going to have? If you said 175, you were correct! There. Is. No. Reward. In Rift. Just prerequists.

E pur si muove!!! I got it what is so horrible about Rift: they don't even hide that it's one giant Skinner's box! In other words: it all feels so programmed, so manipulated. I wouldn't exactly say that I, or anybody else for that matter, am looking for a button that'll give me a pellet. So why do it like that?

It is a good game IF:

You are looking for a WoTLK era+. That's what Rift is. The WoTLK expanded with several new features.
You are looking for Dungeon/raid heavy game. It's actually quite fun in this Aspect.
You are not looking for that much. It'll tickle every fancy, but it'll tickle every peeve as well.
You actually like being told what to do and how.
You actually like being profiled(profiled as in behavioral profiling). Not many people do, but...yeah there's a first time for everything.

Don't worry, I find it bland too.  It's just personal preference, though I disagree with it being anywhere as fun as Wotlk.  Like I've said, I don't think it's a BAD game, it's just that I've already done so much that the game offers in other, better games.

The Soul System could have been a shining jewel in the MMO crown. Had it been properly implemented. I think it was developed OK, but never properly tweaked and balanced,  What could and should have been a truly "A-la-carte" build your own class- system turned out to be the same old cookie cutter "This spec is best" class system we've already dealt with for years. IF only Trion had properly balanced the talents so each Soul had it's ability to either stand on it's own or synergize with others but that talents could be more mixed and matched. For example. If you'd just come over from WoW and say you liked the Death Kinight. Theoretically, there are Warrior souls and talents that could emulate a similar playstyle.  But this didn't happen. You couldn't pair up those souls together effectively. It should have been that you could pick any combination of Souls you wanted and come out with a viable build. And I don't mean haphazardly throwing talentpoints at the trees as if were a game of darts, but a well constructed build should have been available from any combination of Souls.

I learned this the hard way after I leveled a mage using the Necro, Lock and Chloro souls. Basically levled as what we'd know as the Warlock Class. Well, it worked great for leveling.  DoT based DPS, Mage/Rogue/Warrior based pet summons and throw in a bit of self healing and regen into the mix. Very good and viable playstyle. Only. There was no place for it in Endgame. In a Raid guild, I was either Full Pyro DPS or Chloro Healer. I didn't want either of those so I dumped my class at 50 and started over. Of Course, that was also after a few months hiatus to "cool off" from being pissed. LOL

It's the sad state of the genre. The next big title has as many threads discussing issues with it's business model than issues with the game itself.

Here are 3 reasons

1. Graphics - very hard to look at after 30 minutes of play

2. Fluidity - a little on the rough side

3. You have a heightened sense of expectation after playing WoW.

You are probably finding it bland because its graphic style isn't as cartoonish as a lot of games out there.  WoW, SWTOR for example have a lot of bright colours and flashing lights (or shoulder pads) to attract your attention.  Rift doesn't really have this it is more muted.

The questing is also very generic, especially after playing SWTOR or TSW with fully voiced quest givers.  Rift I tend to run up, accept the quest then later look and see what I have to do.

I do like the dungeons and PvP in Rift however.
