We live in a fantasy world, a world of illusion. The great task in life is to find reality.

F2P and B2P is the future and nothing is going to change that.  Sure there are some developers who like P2P but usually its because they want to limit their playerbase or serve a niche audience.

That being said, EQNext isn't going to be a mainstream MMO but they are trying to do something (Sandbox) that very few triple-A studios are willing to do now-a-days so its still possible that their business model could be different then the norm as well.  Meaning they may be the only SOE product to release with a P2P model, but I doubt it.

If your idea of a Sandbox is open FFA Full Loot PvP, full crafted world with minimal support for anything combat then your sandbox ideas are bad! Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

Where does this notion come from that a cash shop doesn't provide a stable flow of money?  It is an antiquated thought and one that unless you had valuable evidence to the contrary should never be uttered by players, the least likely candidates to know the finer workings of revenue and profit sharing avenues.  If anything the transition of almost every major Triple-A title in the last 7 years to go F2P ought to give credence to the fact that a cash hop is by far more profitable and is a higher revenue source then a subscription any day.

In the long term, perhaps.

I am not against the F2P model, but I think its more about keeping the game alive as long as possible to continue receiving revenue from it, than it is higher short term profit potential.  As long as its free to play, there will always be someone playing it, and as long as there are players, someone will spend money.  When you require subscription, it often eliminates a lot of the casual players, who don't know if they will play enough to justify it.

Played EQ, UO, DAoC, AO, WoW, EQII, Vanguard, Ryzom, Darkfall, Warhammer, Rift, MO, Tera, DFUW, Age of Wushu, NW2, ESO and many others I don't remember or care to admit.

SOE supports the sub model too  -- EQ2 is both a ftp game and sub game

the cash shop in EQ2 is cosmetic only  (w exception of mounts and experience potions)

RIFT recently went ftp and Trion still supports subs

Their EQ2-X server had REAL items in their cash-shop for sale to "Help noobs on their way". Everyone saw it as a Pay-To-Win scheme and they caught a lot of flak for it.

I haven't invested time into looking at how things have gone on since then.

What I can say is that I apologize if my thread came off, weird?

Just know that I've been a hardcore EQ fan since 1999 when I first installed it, and connected with a 56k AOL-connection for the first time :). Everquest is to me like Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Harry Potter, or Game of Thrones is to many of you.

Instead of Harry Potter, Everquest was my childhood, and then I moved on to SWG after Planes of Power came out for EQ :).

My fear is that SOE will adopt their horrible "F2P" model that they've slowly been hashing out, but is still pretty terrible.

Not to mention you factor in the constant, non-stop, negative experience after negative experience from "F2P" models, and how it takes away from the game itself in order to turn a profit rather than banking on a monthly sub with constant content patches to keep people interested.

Companies just need to understand that people are NOT willing to pay for low quality products, but are more than willing to pay good money for quality products that they've invested time in caring about. That's all I've ever meant by this thread :).

I've seen the horror SOE wraught upon the now defunct Planetside franchise thanks to the mishandling of Planetside 2. It was supposed to be for the fans of Planetside, but blown up 100x to be the architectural giant it was always meant to be. they essentially turned it into Battlefield: Online with purchasable weapons by making it 10x harder than it should be to obtain said guns so people are more likely to pay $5 to $15 for a pixel gun you'd otherwise have earned with hardwork.

that was true for EQ2X -- the inital server (Freeport) had gear equivalent to Tradeskilled gear

before all the servers went ftp,  that cash shop gear was *removed* from Freeport

EQ2 has been that way for 18+ months, since Dec 2011

People saying "you DON'T have to use the cash shop if you don't like it" aren't thinking this through. It is annoying to have it in the game because what you EARNED has no value if someone else buys it.

Who cares about anyone else?  Do you seriously play MMOs for vanity, to brag it up to other players?  I know a lot of people do, but:  Grow up already.  It is a game.  It was worth it if you had fun doing it.  Are you seriously trying to make a living off the game, that you care what value the things you EARNED (your caps) have?

Edit:  Don't get me wrong.  I am all about fair play.  I don't get a thrill pvping if I know I am playing against someone who just bought their gear and that is why they are winning.  But for the same reason, I am not thrilled to pvp with someone who did some boring godawful raid dungeon for 3000-hours because they are unemployed/student and that is why they are winning.  In both cases, they are not winning because of skill but rather because of game-sanctioned cheating.

Often, I think I am not for MMOs and go on a spree of just playing fighting games again.  Now, those are refreshing games, particularly if face-to-face so lag is not an issue...  Why can't we just have more fighting games, even if I am getting old enough that my reflexes aren't what they once were?

In any case, I understand if people don't like playing in a game that is rigged.  Who does?  Who wants to play dice with someone who uses weighted dice?  But when I hear people talking about the hard work that they put into games, and the blood and sweat they poured out to EARN their place/items, it just makes me laugh.

So you are asking "who cares what other people think?" Hmm, lets see... Perhaps multiple players. Perhaps a massive amount of role playing, players care what other players think. Did you forget which genre you were talking about?

You may call it bragging but I call it the very fabric that holds the community together. Like I said earlier, every piece of equipment in classic Everquest had a story to tell. It encouraged communication. Getting rare items and gear became a common goal amongst players. Sure, epic items probably won't be for sale in the EQN cash shop. However, if they sell vanity items, it will take away opportunities to create and find those items with other players.

It is ironic that you laugh at people who like to earn things. The feeling of accomplishment (winning a game) comes after you have earned it. Lets define game, shall we?

A form of play or sport, esp. a competitive one played according to rules and decided by skill, strength, or luck.

Does it take skill, strength or luck to buy something in the cash shop?

I ve played the game since launch, and I still don t see the excessive amount of so called hackers. Sure theres some, as in any game, but I personally haven t seen any.

You probably don't know what to look for, and have just brushed those experiences off as chance or simply missed them.

Last time I logged in our whole platoon got wiped out on teamspeak by two people. One was a medic and the other was a support. They were camping a roof of an objective point, and their LMG support was SNIPING my guys coming on foot from our AMS (aka: respawn sundy).

After they wracked up about ~100 kills my guys all rage quit (14 of us at the time btw). Two days later both of those guys were banned, and our clan swore off Planetside 2. We'd had countless scenarios like that, amongst some of the worse examples posted before, that all weighed heavily on that decision too.

I ve played it a ton, and never seen it, not sure what else to tell you. Shit happens anyways, it s just a game.

Yeah, it's just a game and there is no reason to stick around when it's not only easy for people to cheat, but being F2P, there is nothing SOE can do to ban these people as they just create a new account.  At least with a subscription model, people are motivated by financial reasons to not cheat and therefore it's much less prevalent.

It's my hope they will either have a subscription based server (preferred) or Freemium setup.  I want a nice cheap, monthly payment where rewards are earned in a reasonable amount of time and not the hundreds if not thousands of hours that result from F2P design.

Pretty simple: f2p = I wont be playing and I will be spearheading the crusade to run the game into the ground I dont care how good the game is. I will also warn everyone I know not to play or endorse it because its a rip off. Most of the people I know are casuals and dont even know what f2p is. I will just have to educate them. I play ps2 occasionally, havent spent a dime, would love to play with my friends but f2p sux so I havent even told them about it. Im sure they will see it on ps4 but I will educate them there too. Hopefully they dont screw up bf4 with a dumb cash shop. F2p = the death of decent video games and the death of fun.
