It will have no choice, because it will only appeal to small niche of MMO players.

Today's average MMO player wants instant action and fast, flashy combat. They won't like the sandbox elements of the game, because those features "slow down" the gameplay and will bore them.

And the very same is true for any other MMO released nowadays. The P2P only time is over.

BUT... there is really a difference how you do it.

- Is it a F2P only game just getting the money from Cash Shop?

- Is it B2P with additional money from Cash Shop?

- Is it B2P with a option to Sub and some additionol money from Cash Shop? (Premium Membership)

- Is it F2P with a option to Sub and some additional money from Cash Shop?

So there will be a lot of different types of revenue models and F2P will not describe all of it, because it is really to vague.

And the average MMO player didnt helped other games to stay p2p, much more the contrary the average gamer is leaving any game after a few month.

What is the last P2P game staying p2p after 1 year of release?

According to steparu, it seems like F2P won't allow stamina regen . . . aka no crafting, which will eliminate chance to build houses, etc. Thus only lvling and hunting. I think this F2P is more like a trial version and might work out in the long run for XL games.

Sure if it was just the trial part I could see it working it wouldn't really change anything. But since f2p always brings the cash shop it's not something I want to be part with. Since labor points are almost like a currency in game and you can buy them from cash shop it's not really a unique way of making p2p game it's exactly the same as any other f2p game.

So mindless superficiality is what players want  ?

*First of all players are not monolithic in their likes and dislikes

*Secondly I would wager that if you took a poll right now and asked players whether many of the games in the market are mindless and superficial....many would say too many unfortunately fit that description. The all too common lament in these forums is that game developers keep remaking the same games over and over with just the slightest twist to posture the game as new ...break through....and different.

If I were a marketer(again)..having a device to give all a free sample of what i think is a fantastic product would be a tool I would seize in a heartbeat. Makes great business sense.

Its already going free to play in Asia http://www.mmobomb.com/news/archeage-goes-f2p-in-korea/

The combat is the same old stuff as any other game. Combat is what makes games fun or not fun to me.

The sandbox features are nice, but I have a feeling the game isn't as fun as its being hyped to be.

I'm just gonna be playing Final Fantasy XIV and then try Elder Scrolls. Two games that have familiar worlds, items, characters and a place in all of our hearts for decades now.

And in that case, I appreciate where you are coming from. However, Combat might only be a small piece of the pie for someone who is more into building, crafting, creating a nation.

Though I won't be playing this game as I don't like several things about it, I don't really think it's overhyped at all.

The ability to plant, grow, harvest and use your own resources, the ability to, apparently, combine abilities and create your own classes, the ability to have war on the high seas, use gliders, and have limited looting, are not things that are done a lot so I can easily see people getting excited about this.

The ability to build right in the world.

There is a lot that is "special" about Archeage.

As far as your Final Fantasy answer, regardless of changing your class by changing weapon, the combat is still tab targetting, skills with cooldowns, etc.

So I still don't see how you can justify one over the other.

AA sounds like a true world. An alternate reality. There are so many things to do.I'm looking forward to taking up residence in that world and see what it's all about.

I love how you claim the game is overhyped yet you passively try to hype ESO. lol.

The game went f2p in Korea mainly because of how XL games treated players, not because omg it's so bad.

Pink, it's like red but not quite.

AA hype has been on the decline (locally) since this sites greatest supporter got tired of waiting.

FFXIV hype, otoh, has been on the rise since it became ok for Square-Enix to come back out in public again (no hurled vegetables).

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

IMHO is isn't hyped enough. I cannot think of any game which has been as open as AA has during development. To the best of my knowledge there hasn't been a NDA for years if ever at all. There is so much information about AA that you can virtually have any question answered you may have by just taking the time to look. Most games during development have strict NDA's, so little is known about most till it is about to release. To me no NDA speaks volumes about the quality of a product and the confidence of the devs.

Take EQNext for example, now here is a game which is overhyped with virtually no info, players are just buying every word coming out of the SOE hype machine with no real facts. TESO on the other hand, is hyped by name alone even though all signs point to failure and just another themepark, it seems as though hype has nothing to do with quality.

I can personally say that AA is in a completely different league and it will not take many long to realize it once they play. The sense of immersion, meaningful/unique PvP, the feeling of danger and fear. Everything that many of us may have felt in MMO's long ago exist once again in AA. You simply cannot compare it to any MMO out there at the moment. So those of you whom ignore it in favor of the standard fare for whatever nickpicky reason you stand on a hill about, your loss. When you get bored yet again of another themepark failure, AA will be there as the first true alternative and it wont take long to realize how wrong you were.

All it took was me sending that E3 press video to a couple of friends who are long time mmo guys also. They currently play here and there a F2P this and that. After watching that video they already are sold on buying it at launch.

There's quite a crowd who will appreciate the crafting and virtual world AA will have to offer in addition to the PVP.

There's some lovely filth down here.

I don't care how much hype there is surrounding a game.  They all have good and bad reviews, good and bad points.  I take them all in, play the game, and formulate my own opinion.  I'll play AA, and if I like it, I'll continue to play AA.  If not, my trusty friend Minecraft will still be waiting for me.
