'fluidity and seamless background worlds' because the game is very basic and low on pixels so it can run on a Pentium 1.

It runs easier because it requires less.

If your case is a benchmark I would forward PONG, it runs even smoother then WOW, boots faster too,  but that's not a MMO.

as far as EVE concerns: with the 'empty space stuttering' it's your internet and hardware getting fried, with a good engine and fast internet it runs smoothless.

I run a good system now, I can run full graphics and all brackets on ON and do not experience any lag whatsoever, untill you run into 1000 vs 1000 battles, but no game can handle that without reinforced hardware serverside.

I'll take the challenge; I would call EVE the PONG of landscape based MMORPG's : empty as hell.

The tric is to create the "illusion" of playing in a landscape based MMORPG with FLUID activity and combat.

Guys like you were the reason some developpers opted to put (off line) Hi Res graphics into what SHOULD have been fluid on line games.

Ohh how much they all failed in this respect. I still remember the Conan comment at launch: the game graphics are awesome ... until you want to ... move.

That being said: the clustering of several realms is the best thing for ANY mmorpg to go on endlessly, but the only one having the technology to do this in a seamless background loading world is Blizzard.

They even achieved it on a 9 year old Legacy system. Calling this "finally", is the same as stating someone found the Holy Grail (in a sense it does for MMO's because it stops the eternal merging of dying individual servers every year).

And with that we go back to point 1, fluent seamless worlds are no challenge on a basic aged engine.

And if you experience stuttering in EVE outside of the massive blob battles, you really have

a) bad internet

b)a bad system

WoW has DX11 effects and a 64bit native client.  WoW is a much more advanced engine.

New Feature: Virtual Realms
- Virtual Realms are sets of realms that are fused together, and will behave exactly as if they were one cohesive realm.

-Players on the same Virtual Realm will be able to join guilds, access a single Auction House, join arena teams and raids, as well run dungeons or group up to complete quests.

-Players belonging to the same Virtual Realm will have a (#) symbol next to their name.

Is this another way of merging servers, or merging the population?  Either way, it's a good idea.  Most server populations feel empty while leveling, which is to be expected with an 8 year old MMO.  I suppose cross-realm helped this, but now i wonder what will happen to server names?

i can only talk for my server, but the non CSZ's are actually quite crowded (see orgrimmar)

i wouldn't call this a server merge, but rather the next step of their phasing/cross-server-zone technology.

It doesn't show then, they are not getting the most of their engine then. But I was just referring to the prior poster claiming that a different game was stuttering when in fact that particular engine shouldn't be the cause. :)

You should download the trial, crank the gfx to max (you will need a highend system to maintain 60FPS at 1080p)  make sure your in one of the newer zones and I think you'll be surprised at how much is going on.  Many people still remember wow looking as it did in vanlilla it has come a long way since then.

I run a new Geforce Titan, I7 with 16gb ram and all my games + OS on SSD's.

So it isn't exactly the slowest system around, not the best, but pretty decent.

Just saying that with a highly accessible game meant for players at the time even with lowend systems, it's easier to run 'seamless worlds' with basic graphics.

And yes, I have played WOW from launch till MOP, on and off -casually- up till last january as a time filler when I wanted to do something else. I know what to expect from the engine.

My remark on the 9 year old technology was clearly focused on the server infrastructure.

By going from single realm play launched 9 years ago, to now creating a clustered server play with load balancing in REAL time in the open world they achieved something huge..

In fact something that was never seen before in MMORPG land/infrastrcuture.

As for graphics are concerned: they put the graphics on par with what Mr Average has at home AND with the limitations of the internet. They updated that several times too btw.

As long as Azeroth is a believable place to wonder in, I don't see problems.

All true.

I am curious, like I said, I love EVE with their server cluster and I always said other MMOs should combine communities.

Either through a server cluster or this way with the phasing of different servers.

I like the technical aspect of it, and I would like to see if they can combine like region-wide servers where everyone can meet each other in that world. This is a big move forward by Blizzard to progress this game as well as doing something about servers that are emptier then others.

The aim is to let all players from one server cluster play with one another as if they played on one realm without losing the login realm they are still on.

So you actually address 5 or 10 times more players (depending on the size of the cluster).

It is not only a question of a full server: not even a FULL Wow server can hold the players needed to populate all lvl 1-90 content.

You need these clusters to man all that content 24/7.

In the rare occasions some world zones will be overpopulated (Elwyn Forest for example, the reversed CRZ mechanics will jump in, making 2 sections of the same reality, leaving groups untouched). But mostly the populate mechanics of CRZ will add simply players to all those empty world zones.

With virtual realms the economy will be regrouped to all clustered servers as well as guild recruitement etc...

The only thing left to do now for Blizzard is to make those world zones active with group quests (probably in a new expansion).

But I agree with you: this mechanic in a new MMO would be dynamite.

The question is though: is the modern day internet player even interested in a populated open world to wade through.

... or does he simply want pre loaded instances like World of Tanks that are so called free to play.

It's server mergers.   It's a good idea.  Kind of sucks they made the announcement after they milked $12.50 a pop from people with their sale.

It may or may not be a merge in the traditional sense but this thing is obviously addressing the same problem as a merge is addressing, namely the problem with empty servers.

What will happen with character names though?

It is a matter of regrouping the players, it certainly is NOT a server merge as that would mean your number of players is limited to one server, which is no longer the case.

Serve (realm) merge: maximum X players per server.

Virtual realms: maximum number of players is X time the number of clustered servers.

Load balancing will be done through CRZ in the open world (without loading screens).

As to your question: the name does not change, it simply gets a realm extension added (like you see in BG's).

The technical introduction of cross realm play in the open worlds back in 2012 makes it now possible to regroup players from several players in real time and put them in ONE virtual realm

Economy/Guild play etc will be possible throughout the virtual realm.

--

It is as if you create one giant realm out of 10 old realms, effectively multiplying the number of players times 10 or more (and as stated the load balancing will be done through CRZ in the open world and cities).

If this technique spreads, it is the Holy Grail of ever populated worlds in MMORPG's, independant of dying individual realms

 A breakthrough.

If numbers weren't down and players complaining about less population on servers they wouldn't do this.

it IS still  a server merge, just not a traditional 'transfer from server x to server y' one, just a different package.

Still a much needed move.

Smart move on Blizzard's part. Now all they need is to add quest objective sharing between people. Like GW2 and Rift where as long as you contribute the quest counts for you too.

Obviously the WoW engine hasnt reached its limit like some people say in order to bash it a bit more lol. Blizz keep surprising people with new stuff on the "same ol" engine.

It far outclasses a server merge --- dude.

Because your new  virtual realm that consists of several servers now regroups many more players and acts like a realm.

Meaning your PLAYER base per virtual realm is X 10 or X 20.

The breaktrhough was through CRZ (permitting players from different servers to play together SEAMLESS and WITHOUT loading screens).

Now they use this CRZ technology from 2012 in virutal realm groups, with a mutual economy and Guid/group play within that massive clustered realm.

That's a COMPLETE different approach and unique.

In fact it is a breakthrough in MMORPG design (certainly with the seamless open world play included).

You can only do so much to a game engine, don't expect wonders and yes, even with the latest technologies, it still looks very dated, but hey, as long as you love it, who cares?

Dated technlogy ? LOL

Name me ONE other landscape based MMORPG that regroups players in REAL time and SEAMLESS in open world play (without loading screens) from different servers.

You can't name even ONE.

A traditional server merge would be easy to do by comparision, blizzard have obvoiusly invested time, money and technology into this *unique* solution to a common problem for ageing MMO's.  But this is Blizzard and this is MMORPG.com so no credit is due, they either stole it, copied it or whatever.
