I think the "is the game a sandbox" derails what should be the true discussion. Is the game good? What are it's issues? Are the issues going to get fixed? Is the cash shop good/bad? Etc.

Having a little more freedom to choose your character build does not a sandbox make.

Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.

territory control - This exists in WoW

player created faction, or 8 soft faction, however you want to look at it. Exists in WoW the game has 3 factions schools of martial arts which can be broken down into 8 separate pieces; just like classes.

Player taxes - Exists in WoW

17 professions from blacksmithing to musician (just like guitar hero, all professions have mini games.) - Exists in World of Warcraft. The mini-game being just like guitar hero I don't know about that one I didn't play the music profession. However, world of warcraft has its fair share of mini-games as well.

FFA pvp

Real working alignment system, that determines how thousands of npcs react to you.  - Exists in any game including World of Warcraft. It's just the reputation system renamed.

Progress doing anything, or nothing at all, or just the things you find fun. - You can do this in World of Warcraft.

school polotics all player driven. - Politic will be politics. This exists in many themepark MMO's depends on how much your guild(s) bump heads. This is also in World of Warcraft, I've had plenty of guild/ faction politics discussions.

Guild alliances fighting for territory control. See Territory control? I remember the good old days of Hillsbrad Foothills back when Open World PvP. Contesting the two towns was great fun back then. I'm pretty sure you forgot about things like Wintergrasp and what not. They're territory control areas in the world that the horde and alliance fight over.

No two items, nor two crafters are the same.  That's untrue in this game and is a false fact.

Guild territory taxes

Free form character progression. No two character are remotely the same at this point.  Only early levels of the game are players truly different from one another. However, once you get into the later portions of the game people definitely use cookie cutter builds.

I could go on. No building block type of game play though. So if you are coming from the point of view that Minecraft is a true sandbox the others are not, I understand.

I've heard people say that they do their dailies. I honestly have no clue what they are talking about. I guess you could play the game that way, doing spy  missions and such, but by no means is it the norm, or something I could even instruct you on how to do.

While you're right about two of the many things you've claimed. That does not make this game anymore a sandbox than World of Warcraft.

Lol, you must of played a different version of WOW  than everyone else has played.

Next your be telling us there our player bountys in WOW, courts system, public executions, prison, fort building, farming, offline system, kidnapping other players, go on give us a laugh.

As for the games well it's a Hybrid.

Like I said previously it's not a leveling system. It's a skill system akin to skill points in most mmo's. And similar to trade skills in eve, Neverwinter, etc. That work off time passively spent training them. Those aren't leveling systems it's just simply how you train in each game. Which is why I said this game has no real leveling system because that isn't one. It's also very possible you can go through your whole gaming life and never do it. Because it's not linear like a leveling system where it will force you sooner or later to lvl or gain exp. Gotta know the difference my man if you gonna stand on the soap box preaching.

Whether it's linear or non-linear the leveling system is still within the game. and level 36 on any one of the "inner skills" that you choose is the max level. It's your choice to choose which inner you'd like to use. However, the inner skill are no more better or worse for the player in the end. 36 is you level cap.

Mtibbs that's wrong. Each school has 4 internals. Each has 36 levels. You must learn one before the other. My character  is max school 3rd (level 108) level 20 2nd interna of anothr school,  and 25 first internal of a 3rd.

These combined make me stronger.

Too bad you can't use more than 1 inner at the same time. Unless they completely changed the system in which the game plays.

You can only have one inner activated at a time, yes, but lvling up multiple inners helps a lot when it comes to things like Meridians (yet another lvling system in this game that can give you quite a lot of stats).

Mtibbs is right, though. There is most definitely a lvling system in the game, and there is a metric crapton of grinding needed to be done to progress through it. Each skill set functions like a class, and is bound to specific weapon types. Each school starts with 3 skillsets (classes), though u can unlock the others through either spending money or lots & lots of grinding.

The game also has very real vertical progression. While at a base lvl it has rock-paper-scissors combat, an Untapped Potential players stands no real chance of beating a One with Nature player, even if they were afk through most of the fight. Furthermore, the gear scaling in the game is a bit ridiculous. A character with the best gear is doing at least twice as much damage as someone w/ lower tiered gear, and taking half as much damage (or less). It may be a bug w/ external parry, but it's stupidly strong atm.

It's also not really a sandbox. The game is based around questing, grinding dungeons, and crafting. While the open PvP is fun, there are a lot of limitation to what a player can, and can't do in this game. Furthermore it has a lot of bugs & issues which makes it hard to enjoy things like the Bounty system, when players just glitch players out of jail instantly, or abuse it to lock players out of a war, etc.

The game is fun, but there seems to be a lot of bias towards it from certain people in this thread.

It's not even like I'm bashing on the game. I've stated many time that I like the game. It's a good game. But I wouldn't consider it a sandbox.

"The game also has very real vertical progression.  Thank you for explaining it more in depth. I know players have the ability to obtain multiple inners; I suppose I wasn't explaining it well enough. That's what makes the game interesting. People who love to theorycraft will absolutely love the game. However, when it comes to the end game the best of the best build is centralized around Taichi Fist and I'll tell you what; I love my Wudang.

Nice discussion over here.

I knew I wont regret taking a look into a thread where someone claims AoW is a sandbox.

Controversial topics are this forum's fuel

Unfortunately he already made a mistake stating, "the game doesn't really have a leveling system". It does, and oh my there's a lot of leveling required in this game. From leveling your skills to your schools inner skills.

It's highly advised not to skill the self-recollection skill at all as it's a waste of points.

I've played this game since beta and can easily say that is game is by no means a "sandbox" in terms of the Elder Scrolls series. Sure the zones are "large" however this game isn't anymore of a sandbox than say World of Warcraft or Everquest. You almost never spend your time in the zones unless you're collecting resources for crafting the nodes are located on the map for you. You're typically in your school training, in dungeons, Dueling outside of Chengdu, and several other PvP events dealing with other guilds/ schools.

He does however, explain some of the basics down fairly well. But this does not show in any light how Age of Wushu is a "sandbox" game.

as have I. You know I don't do anything I don't want to? No two days have every been close to the same for me.

No dailes, no quest. No level cap. No hard factions. FFA PVP. Guild Wars, School wars. Territory control. Polotics, I could go on. In my opinion it's the most different mmorpg I've played in the last 8 years, besides EVE.

I can't believe anyone would call this game a sandbox

Well, I can understand why some people "might" think as to why it would be even  considered a sandbox. The world is a bit overwhelming for first time players. However, after a short while when you get your barrings straightened out. The game becomes significantly easy and you'll find that the vast majority of the game is actually quite simplistic. People will spend their time gathering resources, running dungeons, crafting, and for the most part doing PvP outside of Chengdu.

Towards the end of the video the guy says he will be making more AoW videos.  He only has made one other video in almost two months about AoW and it was about making an alt to keep your main fed. Seriously?  Steamed buns hardly cost anything so why even bother to make an alt for that?  It seems he went back to making GW2, Warframe, and Marvel Heroes Online videos after that.

My point to all this?  He isn't very credible for the argument on how much AoW is a sandbox.

I made only two videos after launch because, I don't have time to sit in any one game making videos. I have to cover a lot just because I haven't made videos doesn't mean. I haven't done anything else in the community. I'm still on the reddit making guides and giving info. And since you are so keen in following me you neglected to mention that isn't my main character I use. It's the one from the first two videos I made in closed beta. Where I'm clearly showing basics just like I was in the third video. You neglected to say I actually have 5 videos. Once again I'll say this don't come out here on soap boxes if you guys can't even get your arguments right.

Also as far as the making a alt for cooking. Everyone suggest that including Wena HERE in fact she suggested 7 alts. So I guess you going to tell her she's wrong too? The point of that is to have your main be what you want if you don't want it to be cooking. And not spend anything on something you can do yourself. But I guess you missed that point to in your rush to be absolutely failure wrong. The video was showing basics and understanding. And clearing up misinformation and confusion. Not showing people obvious things they can do themselves. Again don't critique if you can't even get the meaning of the video correct.

most boring review I've seen in a long time. found myself skipping after 2 minutes. games looks bad. it sounds boring. music makes want to go punch a panda. this is not a game for western audience.

This the real reason this game is not MORE popular.

Also I'll say this again media and industry labels this a sandbox. It doesn't matter what you I or anyone else thinks. Because we can't change the label. So it's useless arguing getting mad at people. Because you're not going to change that fact no matter how much you raise a fit.

If the meaning of the video is to teach the players the basics of the game. Then why is it labeled, "Age of Wushu: Understanding the Sandbox and Loving It." Wouldn't you want to let your viewers know exactly what you're talking about? why not, "Age of Wushu: Your first steps into the world of wushu"? Or something along those lines? Not straight up, "hey guys look at this amazing sandbox and love it!" but in actuality it's just a tutorial of the basics.... /facepalm

Somebody, somewhere has better skills as you have, more experience as you have, is smarter than you, has more friends as you do and can stay online longer. Just pray he's not out to get you.

Because it's painfully obvious what is being said. And apparently you few guys are the only ones failing to comprehend it. As per the video itself reddit etc. And even the original post on this very forum. This like arguing if the game is a sandbox is useless. Because it's how I made the video people got it and it's not changing. I even say in the description and in the beginning of the video what's being done. No reason to change the title because some random too bored/anal dudes. Just don't get it, don't watch it then frankly. I'll take a 90% understand it ratio. The 10% who don't watch another video to your liking.

Nope pay attention to the title. I shouldn't have to teach you guys reading comprehension. The title is understanding the Sandbox. Not understanding what a sandbox is. It's me calling the game itself a sandbox and understanding the game. That is the problem here, people either can't read or reading what they want to read. It's not implied i'm teaching you what a sandbox is or even describing it. It's Age of Wushu see that there I bolded. That is the topic not Understanding A sandbox it's like you guys ignored the rest of the title and just read that. Now again I can't help you if you failed reading comprehension.

If the title was "Age of Wushu: Understanding A Sandbox" And I started off explaining what a sand box is. Then maybe you have a point. But that is not how the video started or described. So I can't help dudes who see what they want to see. And not what was actually there. And if you want to debate uselessly over if it is a sandbox that is fine. But I called it a sandbox because it is. The industry thinks so as well. So it kinda doesn't matter what public opinion thinks including myself. But for this video I called it that. I think it's properly labeled even more so a hybrid. So I say again get it right before you say something is incorrect.

...and that is where people correct you, AoW is not a sandbox. What couple pseudo-journalists think is, again correction incoming, fairly irrelevant.

You have your right to think it;s a Sandbox and in another thread I called it a social Sandbox but not a virtual world one so I at least think your half right. But others have the right to not agree with you and dispute your usage of the word in context to the game.

In fact arguing over what truly constitutes a truly sandbox MMO is one of the favorite pastimes on these forums and will continue to be,so I expect any time anyone uses the word it will attract argument and discussion.YOu chose to use the word i your title and these are the consequences.

If differing opinion makes you take things personally and get up in arms maybe you should avoid the internet.

Hell Eve Online has gotten industry awards as "Best Sandbox PVE Game". You have guys in this very post arguing that. When did you become media? That you actually mattered enough to say what is and isn't sand box? NO ONE I repeat NO ONE in this forum has that pull. The same media is calling this game sandbox. So unless you magically sprout press credentials in a media outlet that matters. Dissing anyone or the game itself calling AoW not a sandbox. You have no pull say or even should be listen to. Now if a pc gaming editor or IGN or Machima editor came here and did it. Then we have some credibility around who mattered.

Argument from authority is a fallacious argument...Have a nice day, sir.
