End of story. Has nothing to do with sandboxes not working in the West.

Keep telling yourself that.   There's nothing game-breaking about the translations or the UI.   The UI is very simple and even resembles most themeparks.

I bought the first early beta package they ever put up for sale.

me too and I finally got my box in the mail more than a year later too bad I dont give a shit about the game any more although its nice they remembered to send it to me... eventually

more than a year later? Are you on crack? or just another troll?

I just started playing AoW and absolutely love the game so far.   For the first time since the launch of SWG back in 2003,  I have "that feeling" of immersion and wonder that I've been missing for all of these years.

What I also realized during my initial few hours in the game and from reading many forum posts, is that most of the current crop of MMO players have not and probably will not make it through the tutorial aspects of this game.

This is a real shame because there is a ton of potential in this game but it seems that most will never get to see it because the tutorial is "boring."

We see so many people on these forums clamoring for sandbox titles yet there is barely any support for this title.   Why not?   If you are so desperately seeking a sandbox experience, here's a great title to try.   The best part is that it's free, you just need to invest some time and patience to learn the game.

Unfortunately,  I think a lot of players enjoy the idea of a sandbox style game but so far it seems that most can't or won't even play one.

That is odd, I pretty much stopped playing not because of the tutorial but because the only thing I ever saw in my chat box was gold spam...go figure...

That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!

Call me silly, but I hardly find AoW a sandbox. They can keep calling it that, but I don't buy it.

That said, the term "sandbox" is quite....relative?

Who would call this game a sandbox? I guess words are losing meaning.

well it hasn't been a year you are right on that, but then again at least he got a box. (never received mine)  My point is, it can be the greatest game in the world (I like all the ideas and concepts) but if the game is presented well, and I am not talking about graphics, but rather the translations and how they introduce you to everything then it won't hold some people.

This game is simply not a very good game. Myself and three other friends all played this game for several weeks be before giving up. All of us played sandbox titles previously, such as UO, SWG and EvE. AoW in no way compares to any of those. It is a bunch of linear grinds designed to make people get frustrated and use the cash shop, on top of the things other people already mentioned. It is not a fun game. It is not really a complex game. It is a lot of farming and mob grinding dressing up a typical Asian grinder, doing the same dailies over and over and over. Plus there are tons of bots, and gold spammers, which are never dealt with. This is more a "part-time job" for S.Korean and Taiwanese teenagers to sell some virtual items/currency and make some pocket money (which is legal in those places, and there are few part time jobs as compared to many Western countries). And all of THAT is why this game is not doing well in the West: the West is not its target audience.

This game is for elite gamer, obviously you and your three other friends get used to playing easy games. Just do us a favor, write something constructive, not the same trolling in every AOW thread.

If by elite, you mean, must play 12 hours a day to the exclusion of having a job, fine. If you are a Korean teenager, and playing AoW IS your job, fine. If by elite, you mean being able to tolerate an endless grind, boring, non-rewarding string of doing the same dailies every day, forever, then fine. Like I said, this game is NOT aimed at the West, and it should be no surprise that it is not doing well here. But then, the population of Korean teenagers is much lower. Sandbox veterans of EvE, SWG, and UO, with many, many years of MMO play must not be "elite enough" then. Or the game just sucks.

This game is simplistic, boring, and nowhere near engaging.  The characters feel like animated cardboard, the world feels dead, and it relies too much on the "flying" as a gimmick.

That was my experience, as well. It was a couple hours of... doing quests. I also didn't care for the cash shop, as it's one of the few MMOs where I actually felt gated by how much I spent, especially with the VIP system.

It had a neat art style, but that wasn't enough to hold my interest. As for 'sandbox'... to each his own on that one. I didn't experience any of it.

Yeah right, a couple hours of doing quests, you make me lol.  Playing AOW does have an IQ requirement it seems.

I'd really like to know when "all out pvp" started to = "sandbox"....that's really the only part of sandbox this game has...otherwise it has no direction.

My complaints:

- Uninspiring graphics

- Limited character customization

- world similar to every other (historic) type asian grinder

- combat does not feel fluid at all

- people call it a sandbox when it's not one

- no direction (other than pvp)

I have a full time job, I only play 2-3 hours a day, I play even less during the weekend cause I have more things to do in real life. I'm not sure how you played AOW, but I'm sure you play it wrong, very very wrong.

Where did you get this Korean teenage playing AOW full time idea? racial profiling? stereotype?

Here is my complaints to your complaints:

1. you either have a crappy computer or you don't know how to maximize the graphic settings.

2. if you really digging that, aow is not for you. maybe hello kitty has better customization.

3. world similar? have you actually traveled outside the noob village? I bet you never did cause you couldn't even pass the initial half an hour tutorial.

4. have you actually had any combat with goose skill? I bet not, you expect to be the master right the way.

5. sandbox or not , who are you to judge?

6. no direction? wow guide you, not AOW. AOW is for elite gamer, you just a noob.

Dude,....there is absolutely nothing about AoW that is "elite".   In fact there is nothing "elite" about any VIDEO GAME.  You want to show me how "elite" you are then show me your golden trident pin, EIB, air assault wings, EOD pin or Ranger tab.  I imagine you probably don't even know what any of those are.

However, these are fundamental reasons why sandboxes won't work in the west anymore.    If players want a truly open environment and game systems that will promote long-term, player driven content, there's going to be a learning curve which may not translate into super exciting game play right off the bat.

I don't think anyone would disagree. But I actually found EVE's learning curve and initial game play more engaging than Age of Wushu. Same with Ryzom for that matter (though some might argue it isn't a sandbox - much like AoW I suppose).

Age of Wushu might be the best game ever but I think it needs more to make it engaging. Also, I do rememember being hit with a lot of cash shop stuff when I was in the beta but I suppose that's been tempered now. Or not, I don't know.

well it hasn't been a year you are right on that, but then again at least he got a box. (never received mine)  My point is, it can be the greatest game in the world (I like all the ideas and concepts) but if the game is presented well, and I am not talking about graphics, but rather the translations and how they introduce you to everything then it won't hold some people.

actually it was been almost a year, i "pre ordered" for 9.99 on june 17 2012

There is no such thing as an elite gamer or an elite game.  Period.

That's like saying there's no such thing as an exceptional athlete or a person of above average intelligence.  Some people just do it better than the 90% and that's what defines elite.  I'm just going to quote GOT here:  "Prodigies appear in the oddest of places."  Games are no exception to this.

Uh, elite simply means the most skilled in a group, are you saying there is no group of players more skilled than others? The definition of elite has nothing to do with what special forces group you belong to.

Sorry if you guys consider AOW a sandbox you really show you have no idea what a real sandbox is.

AOW  runs on the rails worse than most theme parks, boggles my mind that a game like this would even remotely be considered in the same ballpark as a game like SWG.
