i am also tired of most mmo games a little bit of flash and no substace,

that is why i bought SHROUD OF THE AVATAR ,mr. Garriot said himself substance is most important

i expect alot and they are making the game exactly we the players are asking for- crowd funding looks like to be the future,

developers lost their originality and replaced it with deadlines for profits.

You really have no clue what people mean when they talk clone.  Anyone that says 'WoW was a clone of EQ' just signals they have no idea what they are talking about.

Its like saying 'the Grand Marquis is similar to the Lincoln town car?  Well the Lincoln Town car was just like the VW beetle!"

My thoughts exactly.

Did you know that Oprah is a clone of Heidi Klum?  They are both women after all.  So if you have a chance to date one it shouldn't matter which one you choose - both are women, thus the same ultimately.

Same old story. There are plenty of alternatives, and also the games that pre-dated WoW are still up and running. Why not play them if this is not just a case of rose tinted glasses?

I would kill for a fantasy MMORPG with no instances, grouping that is almost mandatory, slow fights, death penalties, and good story / lore. All of that would be anti WoW.

Istaria.  The death penalty though is light, but it builds.  A debuff that is ignorable for first few deaths and increases with each death.  The debuff will wear off in 5 minutes or so, longer with each death.

Every death gives a death point.  The death point takes 12 hours to go away unless you eat.

Quit worrying about other players in a game and just play.

It does look old school. I will try this out. Exciting.

Should also tell you it has a very small player base so while mobs are hard and grouping definitely helps, it's hard to actually get a group :(

Quit worrying about other players in a game and just play.

2 million boxes sold.  500,000 subs for longer than a year and current active 500,000 subs with 2 million f2p players. Likely it's paid off now.

The fact that a 200-300M MMO paid itself in less than 2 years and now is generating a profit for EA is a good thing.

I'm still not sure why OP's is upset.

There are a lot of music out there that I don't like. I don't have this desire to rant about them though.

Seriously, who does? o_O

Do you mean the gear treadmill or the fact its got a hotbar? MMOs like any other line of games, take what works and add to it. Even FPS games all have the same basic elements. Same with RTS games. Time to start judging games on their quality not what is the same. Because when something really unique and new comes out, thats the games that get bashed the hardest by people here.

I feel like this point is rarely acknowledged on these forums and in conversations of MMO's everywhere.

Just because WoW is a popular and relevant/modern example doesn't mean that when other developers use fundamental aspects of WoW, doesn't automatically make them a WoW clone.

Most of the aspects people say that signify that another game is a "WoW Clone" are often some of the basic fundamental aspects of the earliest MMO's.

Concepts like raiding, Gear grinding, instances, hotbars, tab targeting, The trinity, etc.

Honestly as a day 1 release WoW player, do you know how they made it so big, so popular? WoW's Developers made the world of MMO's more convenient and accessible... and more importantly not in one fell swoop, but slowly over time. Each patch and each expansion usually had small incremental changes that made the game more accessible via convenience and thus more desirable to a wider range of demographics and it expanded their audience. Their subscriptions grew and over time since the changes were small and subtle to start most of their core still stayed. Sure plenty of people quit but not nearly as many that joined to replace them and then more.

WoW is not a clone of EQ.... EQ had slow combat, WoW is fast. EQ had more grouping. EQ classes were more separate, WoW classes are more hybrids. EQ had few and far between instances, WoW had many. EQ quests were sometimes hard to figure out, WoW quests guide you from point to point ad infinitum. EQ had a HARSH death penalty, WoW had none. Of course, EQ has changes for the worse over time.

When I say a game is a WoW clone I mean it has all of the things I just listed for WoW above. Mass instances, solo friendly, no death penalty, hybrid classes, fast combat, etc.

As for other genres of games, I would never play a game that is this similar to a game I already played. Deus Ex is a totally different type of shooter than Cube 2. Ico is a totally different type of puzzle game than The Longest Journey. Xenosaga is a totally different type of RPG Lunar Silver Star Story.

I can't believe people think WoW is an EQ clone.

P.S. tired and going to bed. please excuse the "English."

Yeah... damn WoW clones. It is just like movies... screw movies they are all just Godfather clones, ya know how they have like actors and scripts and lighting... such bull. I mean how come things in the same genre sometimes have similar things from other things in that genre? Damn clones... just like people, what is with the majority of them having two eyes... such a rip off.

Soooo yeah, I personally like quests and having a purpose. Sandboxes don't hold my interest. I think the majority of people on this site (which is a minority of actually MMO playing people) wouldn't really enjoy a true sandbox game and would be bitching about a lack of things to do, and no end game etc.

I would like to give an opinion on this post, but if I agree I will offend people who disagree. While if I disagree my comment will be seen as inflammatory. Either way I will get banned by this site full of the most delicate flowers in online gaming. Ban people for giving honest opinions... beautiful. Unfortunately I still like the articles.

Congratulations. You managed to pinpoint the elements of EQ WoW built on, and at the same time demonstrate a complete lack of understanding.

WoW IS an EQ clone. Clone doesn't mean a game doesn't improve on any of the elements, though. WoW literally took everything about EQ, and made it more accessible. That's it. WoW is basically to MMOs, what Halo was to FPS games.

What an oxymoron!

I just can't stand tab target, bland quests, Dungeon grinds, reputation grinds, shallow stories, WoW combat, WoW animations, stand to cast, focus on the endgame, gameworld so bland that players have to bring it to life with an actual Heavy RP, "crafting", ... I mean this has got to end at some point or the other. We've sacrificed Conan, Warhammer, Star Trek, Star Wars, The Elder Scrolls(soon), DnD(Neverwinter- it should've been NWN 3!), LoTR(almost forgot this one lol!)... WHERE DOES THIS STOP???

I agree that we are seeing movement towards both sandboxes and hybrids, but currently we are in the gutter with all the shits, excrements and stuff. Woe be upon this genre...

(I think I'll play TSW+singleplayers until these suits{whose ties are so tight around their necks that they can't think-not enough O2} wake up and realise that you CAN'T REPLICATE WoW's success! Hell, even Blizz can't replicate that "perfect storm", let alone others.)

Is this a good idea? Is anyone else tired of current "MMOs"?

I want MMORPGs back, damn it!!!

Darkfall is the answer.  But nobody cares...

this made me laugh, lol thank you. People use the term "WoW clone" because it's shorter than "Terrible and Boring Piece of Shit"
