Did any other Blizz fans find a few of the statements in the article worrying?

"We've always had a highly iterative development process, and the unannounced MMO is no exception. We've come to a point where we need to make some large design and technology changes to the game"

1. Have they been travelling down the wrong path ALL THIS TIME and have only just realized it? If their development process is so highly iterative where have they failed and why?

2. Because they started working on this project back in 2008 is the Titan concept already too old and behind current times?

"Blizzard's to-be-announced massively multiplayer game, codenamed Titan, has allegedly been rebooted and delayed. According to VentureBeat, the Blizzard team of 100 reassigned 70% of the project's staff, leaving a small team to start over"

I'm finding this statement hard to swallow. Blizzard are renowned for taking alot of time to develop a game (D3 for example). If they are starting over how will they complete a game in three years? Why drop 70% of the staff working on the project if there is so much to do or are they really at a loss with what direction to take presently?

Or.....Can we put it past them to release a false statement like this? This technique is used particularly well in the military when new recruits are doing their basic training. Get their morale/hope up then drop it and bring them up again to a higher level. I guess we'll have to wait till Novembers Blizzcon to see but I'm crossing my fingers for them to announce that things are back on track for a possible 2014 launch. Blizzcon and  a large portion of the MMO community would erupt into euphoric rapture.

Hey now, lets let Firefall decide what type of game it's going to be, before we give it any labels like MMO or Sci-Fi.

I'm sure they've narrowed down their genre to Shooter so far, at least. :)

Surprised no one mentioned Blizcon yet..  Wasn't the announcement of "Titan' going to be their big thing for this year, now what?  If this article is correct things don't bode well for Titan's future..  Having spent 5 years in development, and now doing a reboot? WOW!!!!!  Maybe Blizzard is realizing that designing a game to be a themepark hamster wheel wouldn't be in their best interest.. Recent games such as Rift and SWTOR, are good examples.. I suspect most WoW subs stay there, because of attachment issues, but I doubt many would jump thru those same hoops again with a new game.. IMO

The gaming market is so primed for a great  MMO to be released . WHat ever company gets it right first and soon will become the next big super game. If blizzard wants to gamble they can be that in 3 years despite all the other games coming out between now and then, i believe they will loose out. I do believe even if they arent the next super game they will still be very big none the less. We'll see if the gamble pays off big , Superbig , or maybe not at all!

Lol at some of you thinking blizzard is intimidated by any of the upcoming/current games out there. Technically the only thing blizzard would have to do with titan is make a highly polished MMO to beat the majority of trash out there right now.

The only game to even scratch the surface of WoW in the past 8 years is GW2 and it doesn't have 1/10th the active players, on a non sub game. Ponder that for awhile and rethink your answers.

Even though a lo of mmos are medicore, meaning its no challenge for the right devs to profit from a good idea like wildstar, but it already sounds like blizzard is making a mistake. They can release an mmo that is a compliment to wow but differentiated from wow.

it would be a genius move. The first benefit of having an mmo that is similar to the other is sharing achievements in both games. So players of wow can take their gold, lore unlocks, mounts etc to the new mmo.

The new mmo should be completely different, and offer an experience that does not take away from wow. Wow is a themepark, and has pvp ladders, raids, and other themepark attraction. However, the new mmo should be a sand box mmo. They can a bit of story, but that would come from wow.

Instead the new mmo should be about the open world, exploration, player cities, npc armies controlled by players like a strategy game. Npc alignment.

There should be gambling and mini games. Wow won have that, but this should. This should be an adult rated mmo, but not about nudity but to include better graphics, mature stories/language, blood and gore and ofc gambling.

Blizzard making another eso, or eso meets wildstar... It wont do well without it being a Warcraft/starcraft product.

the current WoW developers may be kind of stupid when it comes to game design, but that's because most of the brains were moved to Titan's development.

And I am sure Titan's developers had some interesting ideas, in which they figured would be pretty much a niche experience if they launched it in today's society, which would doom the game. So they going back to the drawing board to revamp it for more modern day MMO gamer's appeal, which seem radically different than how it was a few years ago when project Hydra was first announced.

the brains at Blizzard know they need more modern day trends or fail like many recent MMOs have like SWTOR for example.

also it may had originally been designed for P2P which they know is a dying market in the next year or so. So they redesign from the ground up to be Sub Free.

I am pretty sure it would have ended up being a sci-fi version of wow..

So yes they have seen people are not really interested in themepark games as much these days, plus they already have the most popular themepark game on the market so why make a game that would take away players from their main game.

So maybe they scrapped that idea and are going to have to come up with something different.

I also think they will stick with P2P its a model that has worked for them fine and will work for them in the future.. the bottom will soon fall out of this f2p fad.. don't get me wrong there will still be f2p games an always will be but as today they wont be up to the standards we want as gamers..

All just speculation tho as no one has any idea haha.

My wild guess would be that they were making WoW in space and realized that Carbine was already beating them to the punch with Wildstar (I mean this in a good way for Wildstar).

Now, they are going back to the drawing board and will most likely drop the sci-fi theme in favor of something else like maybe post apocaliptic setting or even cyber-punk.

What puzzles is me is that statement that they are re-assigning project's staff to WoW and other games. Damage control to please the investors/shareholders?

When you go back to the drawing Board, all you need is the Director/Producer, the designers and some (concept) artists and maybe a handful of devs to do some POC coding.

This redesign process can take up to a year. A huge Waste of Money and Resources to keep 70% of the staff fidling their thumbs for months up to a year, while they could be put to good use in other Projects in the meantime.

And seeing how WoW now is on it's decline for real and by the looks of it losing a couple million subs a year as continuing trend.

They most likely came to the conclusion that WoW 2.0 might now be a serious option. And in 2016 (which can, as others have said, easily end up being 2017 or 2018 instead With delays) WoW will be over 12 years old and most likely have fallen Down to just a million+ subs.

So then it would be a Perfect time to release a brand new WoW 2.0, with improved Graphics and New/improved and more modern gameplay to get all those people back again.

And you can bet that there will be millions of People in line again to buy WoW 2.0. As if Blizzard is good at something, then it's sure as hell in excellent marketing!

One conclusion not to draw from this is that the MMO industry is in any trouble. Remember its a garden of roses in MMO land.

apparently the game is being rebooted(was probably WoW 2.0) and they have assigned 70% of the team to other games while it gets reworked.

Blizzard are good improvers, but not good innovators.

Look at their game history. They copy and improve, copy and improve.

I cannot recall a single Blizzard game that was truly original or innovative.

Now that they lead the pack they are lost. My bet is that right now the other games out there are performing so badly that Blizz just can't decide which one to copy.

In this respect they are like Nintendo. Successful but basically worthless to the industry and a danger to themselves when they try to lead.

Titan will end up being WoW 2.0, they'll go back to familiar success and try to bottle lightning twice.

And before I get accused of being a WoW hater, I played WoW pretty much solidly for 8 years.

so much for blizzard claiming Titan was playable 2  years ago

if there were to be a WOW 2.0, then it would be a completely new engine, or perhaps a game engine in use by another game already in development, but im guessing that part of the reason for Titans 'reset' so to speak, might also be because of the backlash against heavily phased/instanced games, perhaps Titan was going to be using a lot of that kind of technology, and now their having to redevelop the game engine on that basis, only time will tell

Forget what his name is the former CEO of D3, the dude who was responsible for D3 turning out the way it did from launch. From WoW Cata expansion. What's that dudes name who was hired to organise all that? Sure you know who I mean.

There was a joke about Titan being renamed to Titanic because it was said somewhere that that dude was going to be in charge of it.

Anyways, it's just getting restarted I'm assuming so the engine isn't too out of date. So, it'll be awhile before release. Bring on Wildstar or EQNext whichever comes out first.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

I love these guys who claim that Titan is WoW 2 or that WoW 2 will actually exist at any point within the next decade. There is no reason for them to make a sequel to WoW when WoW is still one of the most lucrative money makers in gaming.

makes me wonder if the engine they used so far was thought to be insufficient or defective somehow and they just halted all asset and content production until they get a change to fix or redesign it. It would be a critical enough thing to relocate all other resources until the matter is solved.

This is just speculation ofc. Maybe they've gotten their hands on some new piece of tech/software powerful enough to justify such an action or maybe they're expanding to the console platforms aswell, who knows.

tbh, the console thing does have a high probability, as both the xbox one and the ps4 are using very similar architecture, although after the latest xbox one reveal, i could see developers suddenly putting a bit of distance between themselves and microsoft, kind of freaky tbh, microsoft patenting stuff that means their able to give rewards/achievements for watching adverts and making audible/body gestures at various prompts within the advert itself.. with the streaming they could probably 'replace' adverts to ones aimed at the watcher anyway. interesting times indeed.

Does anyone else believe WoW is used as a testing ground for Titan's ideas? I believe it is/was/will be. If you played WoW you can see how they changed up the gameplay from expansion to expansion, the latest expansion being Mists which added a massive daily grind/rep grinds that turned off many players. They also tried to give the population what they wanted in Cata with Heroics that were very hard to pug at the beginning & then the population dropped and complained and easy mode was once again put back in place.

Ideas like Raid finder has changed raiding culture to the point that it IS the end game for the majority of players now. They are still messing around with PVP, trying to chase the carrot of balance that they will never be able to reach. If Titan's gameplay elements were heavily focused on all these ideas Blizzard is "testing" in WoW, then with sub numbers dropping they might have realized that Titan was heading in the wrong direction to appeal to the masses.

Another problem is putting the game off for another 3-5 years. In that time the MMO landscape could have altered again massively, just like how F2P happend in recent years. Blizzard doesn't want to start Titan again now & have it not be a game players want to play in 2016/etc because they were out of touch with what players do want in an MMO. Not niche players either, but the masses of casual players which is their market.

Finally, with games like Everquest Next and others starting to venture back into sandbox worlds & then what could be the main competition for a WoW-esque style of MMO in Wildstar also going to be around when this new Titan finally sees the light of day, they might be right to have started over. One thing is for sure, the MMO landscape is very different now than it was when Titan was first started.
