Continuing with my question everything theme, lets question MMORPG intros. What we are used to seeing is some sort of cut scene, some sort of “we’re relying on you, the heroest of heroes, the hero other heroes look up to”. Then the game loads, your standing in a starter zone, and you walk 5 feet to the quest giver (they reminds you the world is on your broad heroesque shoulders), snag it, then kill 5 rats-like only a hero can.

So, what can CU do better?

I had a few ideas on my blog but frankly I'm more interested in hearing some of the ideas from the community:

You get crap games with flashy intros
e.g. swtor, d3

You get better games with simpler / cheaper intros
e.g tl2 compared to d3

You get games which don't bother and still sell a ton
E.g. gw2, minecraft, terraria

Money spent on intros is almost always money that could be better spent on the actual game

I really liked the GW2 intro. Like I say in the blog. I was raised poor, we didn't have fancy stuff, but with some creativity we made the stuff we had great. I don't want a game to spend a pile on an intro that you see 1 time per character, but with some creative solutions you can have a memorable intro without lots of cost. One of my favorite "special effects" in pro wrestling is the lights going off. When they are off you know something cool is about to happen, when they come on you get a surprise. Low cost, hell it saves power, but that doesn't matter the impact and effect are still powerful.

Wait, what? The first personal story quest of Guild Wars 2 is a great intro.

I hate the personal story, I make my own stories in MMOs, but I loved the intro.

"Question Everything" = a good idea for a good series... my suggestion to you is to contact MMORPG.com and ask if they would be interested in actually paying you for a column?  Your writing style could use a little work... nothing a good Editor couldn't help you with.

 

Anyway, to the topic:

As this is a PvP / RvR game I suggest throwing the player straight into battle as the starter zone...

Against Bots.... but bots from the other realm(s)

Intro: The screen starts with a dream... a nightmare...the veil ripping (your idea - intros the lore nicely) sounds of battle...alarm...

The character wakes...to the sound of battle and alarm!

Intro leads player through how to equip a weapon and then they can go outside to see a raid in progress... there are enemy in their village!  they must fight (intro tutorial)... then the fighting stops as the raiders leave.

The damage and destruction is shown

Then the player is urged to repair weapons (crafting intro)

Then the other realm attacks (advanced fighting tutorial)

The second raiders leave (the village is almost wiped out)

Then the player must scout (Veilwalker/stalker optional tutorial and scouting tutorial for others)

They find a combined force plotting against them about to attack the village... they get back but too late...the attack is underway... they can fight if they choose but their village is wiped out and they flee to the hills....

Fade out as the players character treks through snow... fade in in the game walking at some random point in their realm's territory.

 

Points:

-no mention of "You are the Hero!"

-no killing rats

-simply fighting tutorials

-crafting tutorial

-scouting / veil tutorial

-the player learns who the enemy are

-the player has motivation to fight them

-the player knows some lore

 

Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.

Thanks, I'm having fun pretending to know how to write. Right not MMO is kinda getting the milk for free without having to buy the cow, but sadly that milk isn't quite at it's peak. Maybe if I get good at this they will offer me something someday, no matter, I'm having fun and it's all about entertainment to me.

Maybe an intro that is like your starter zones in games of today, you know, that teach the basics.  And when you finally learn everything and you seem to be getting on your path to herodom when all of a sudden BOOOOOM the Veil is pierced, screen goes black.

You awaken in the middle of the battlefields, not a safe area, though maybe near the safe area.  The rest you just have to figure out through interaction and lore.

That's just, like, my opinion, man.

No intro. Sandbox style you are NOT the hero, gritty, dark, thrown into the mix gameplay intro if anything. Instant message that you have to earn glory if you want to experience it.

Yeah, that kind of quest would be pretty worthless.  Aren't you excited that CU will not have any of that nonsense?

Realm pride + home/keep defense > killing rats

Not sure about the stability of glass houses, but, yes, I am looking forward to the building system.  Looks pretty cool so far!

There's nothing wrong with killing rats - in CU we might be able to skin them and make little leather gloves!

I don't care what they do for an intro.  All I know is I want awesome music at the log in screen.  Something that gets my blood pumping cause I know excitement is coming.

Since there is a fairly complicated story right now, the opening intro to the game would likely involve a lore dump of some sort.  Thats not really a bad thing either as long as its done well (i.e. dont bore players as if youre reading the lore from a textbook).

 

After that, the tutorial area should just be a class based walkthrough, perhaps with some trainer explaining your class and its skills while the game also provides you with basic instructions on the UI.  Then maybe you have the option to fight against some other new starting characters from other realms long enough to familiarize yourself with combat.

 

And of course that should all be skippable for players who already know what they are doing and just want to get to the action on a new character.

i think people expect an intro of some sort,   but I would not blow too much money and time on it,   more important things to focus resources on

The "question everything" tag is rather annoying, but the topic is interesting enough.

 

Personally I want a series of cutscenes / story.  However, I think that the sequencing of the presentation should be different.

 

1.  Run launcher.  Launcher has a checkbox for "SKIP INTRO ??".

2.  Log in.

3.  Launch game.

 

4.  Startup/intro is a long multi-minute [CG] sequence that serves as the actual intro.  You can skip it by hitting ESC or spacebar or whatever if you didn't select to skip it on the launcher.

 

This intro gives a background on the Veil and the basic outline of wth the 3 realms are and why they're there.

 

5.  Server / realm / char select.

 

6.  [For new chars]: short realm-specific intro cutscene / dialogue welcoming "a promising new realmcitizenperson/class", etc.  I think this piece should be impersonal.  "YOU ARE THE HERO?"; not really.  The game should introduce you as part of your realm, not as a lone wolf solo hero.  This is not a single player game.

 

Edit: If I recall correctly, MJ said something about using a DAOC-style battleground (non-instanced) as an intro island for new characters / new players.  The "new char" intro sequence can introduce players via that mechanism.

I misunderstood above, I thought topic was about thoose flashy intro movies mmos have. Those are a waste of money.

personally I like the idea of a planetside 2 approach for cu. Just drop the new player smack in the heart of the biggest battle on the server. A thrilling baptism of fire

LOL, it sounds entertaining... but that has to be the best way possible to drive away new customers.

EDIT: and LOL if you think of it from the perspective of the poor crafter characters if they started the game that way:  "anybody want a pair of gloves?  wait no.. no stop.. dont put that sword there.. aughhhhhhhhhhh!!!!".

Maybe you get to play witha  super cute puppy for 5 mins then a dirty hib shows up and kills it?
